- What's up Dusty Crew, this time Spence is back working on the Dust Buggy's latest and greatest improvement, a pair of weldable braces to strengthen the strut housings of our front suspension!
Being that the Dust Buggy is a Super Beetle, (which, if you recall, are specifically NOT meant for offroad use due to their Macpherson strut suspension design) we have had to make some significant improvements to her to be able to bash her on the dirt any way we please. Do a little homework first, but then jump in to welding head first! Word of warning though - it's addicting!

Was just watching another baja build and thinking, "Wow, those shocks probably cost more than my whole car!" But then I reminded myself that therein lies the beauty of owning a baja: you can go as mild or wild as you want (or your wallet can handle! ). You two with Dust Buggy are perfect examples - making it awesome, the way you want, and overcoming challenges ingeniously along the way. As always, thanks for sharing!
Spencer is making life easy for us fellow superbeetle owners, and your R&D is top notch! Real world stuff, don’t know how much of a market there is but I do now there are a lot of super beetles and 71 and up convertibles that could see some fun uses.
Just put a kingpin beam in it but pretty cool for a strut bug ❤

I have a '71 Super Beetle baja. I had a similar problem with wheel rub but a simple solution was to buy wheels with a little more offset. It gave a slighty wider stance and no more wheel rub.

Hey guys. Just letting you know that there is supposed to be a small amount of oil in the strut housing to promote heat transfer so the cartridge won’t overheat. Bmw does the same thing.
Question, i'm planning on getting one of this bad boy next month, and smog is required before i can transfer the car under my name right? Where do you smog test this?
Depending on where you are located the laws on it may be different. But for California, if the car is older than 1976 it is considered a classic and exempt from smog
