As a D&D DM I find this really interesting in the context of world building. Maybe not as your players are playing, but letting this run and taking notes on the history of your world by the time your players show up.
i like to do that with crusader kings 3- let the world run while im out running errands or something, and come back and see what happened... Civ 6 too, you can mod it so only AI's are playing on giant earth map, with true starting locations of civilizations, then watching shit play out lol
Had the same idea. Ran a game for hours after seeding 5 human civs on a big map; their conflicts were surprisingly dynamic. After 4000 years, a few cultures spread around from their initial spot, and eventually one empire was formed uniting everything. The cities ended up partitioning ore and stone pretty evenly, and the empire stagnated, led eternally by a random human who rolled the immortality trait.
I recommend looking into dwarf fortress. That game has a very in-depth world builder and 3 game modes: a 3rd person top-down adventure game, a colony builder, and a legend viewer that lists the history of the world it generated. Some people spend hours generating worlds and reading histories without even touching the two other game modes. The maps made at world gen are geologically accurate too, including things like rain-shadows from mountains and placement of aquifers.
I would love a god sim to run as a background process (headless) for awhile, building a log of "interesting events". Then, when I open the app back up sometime, it shows me a "highlight reel" with a text log that tells the story like DF, and I can basically control the video playback of the reel to watch funny and cool moments play out. I can jump into the reel at any time to mess with details and then let it play forward from there, like splitting timelines in sci-fi. This would make god sims so much nicer for me, because I wouldn't have to invest quite so much time in them but I'd still get my own little custom fantasy storytelling engine to tool around with. And most nights I could just let it tell me stories the way I sign onto YT before bed.
After watching this, I think God Sim's are my favorite of these top-down world builder games. Looking at what I really enjoy about games, I just really like watching civilizations and seeing how the AI develops. This game looks awesome and I love the simplicity and abundant possibilities that can happen. Thanks Cat!
I got it on my remind me list when it was in the app store but wasnt downloadable yet, Ive played it weekly since then and I have to say the amount of love that was poured into this game is amazing, it was more of a passion project that became super successful
A few things to mention, you can make desert biomes using Sand (on the first tab, not the terrain tab for some reason) and if the sand is coastal it becomes beaches which can grow palm trees, or if it's a desert it can grow cactuses. Currently I don't think any race can start their civilization on Sand but they can expand and build on it later. Swamp tiles are considered water too so no building on them sadly The civilizations can advance to the point where they have dockyards and build boats for fishing, war and transport, and recently they can build watch towers in their land which fires arrows at enemies
Love this! I've always enjoyed the concept of a little civilization/world taking shape over time, making their own decisions etc. Like that Simpson's episode where Lisa creates a mini civilization with her science project.
Use rivers to separate biomes so you can have growing biomes that don't just overtake entire continents. You can even set it up so some areas have definite boundaries for biomes using rivers with other areas where biomes are allowed to compete. Makes a fun and dynamic environment.
It's a simulation, which can be a game if you choose to make it so. Finally a god sim where it's an actual god sim and not a town management/ rts game. A simulation of being a potent being who isn't micromanaging stuff. There's another game that is close to feeling like a true god sim, where you can dictate laws to the people and they try to interpret them. Crest - an indirect god sim. There aren't a lot of god games where you play as a god, instead being someone who just controls units and places buildings (a bog standard rts).
Watching you paint a world while explaining geology principles and then sprinkle different civilisations on it to see them grow, thrive and fight another was just awesome, thank you so much !
Been playing the mobile version of this for a long while, such a fun and chill game! Also knowing EXACTLY what was going to happen to Splat's 'volcano island' once he hit play... priceless
Looks really fun! Would also probably benefit A LOT from mod support - just imagine all those existing fantasy (or real) worlds that players could create if they had powers specific to those worlds available to them, or set specific parameters for certain races such as their level of aggression for example. I could see a hardcore fanbase building up if they had access to all those tools.
This is actually pretty cool. It's really hard to make a game with this type of natural "life" progression seem truly natural. It helps that we have learned a lot with procedural generation. But real life happens on such a minute scale in growth that its hard to replicate in a meaningful way in a game like this. But the organic growth seems to happen quite well in the game and its kind of fascinating to watch unfold. I'm definitely gonna keep an eye on this one.
This video is less game review and more 'let me get my notebook and note all this down, this is probably coming in my final exam'. Really really love it when Splat's geology knowledge comes through!
I'm a recent sub, an have already bought a couple of games after watching your videos, so thanks! But anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to hear of your geology background. Am also a geologist. Cheers dude and thanks for the awesome content!
Thats fun you can "Job" the heck out of your people. This looks like something I'd wanna play with sometime. Also really was digging on the geology ted talk. haha. Fun stuff!
Nice. This is on mobile too and it's free. I think this could give me a lot of direction and inspiration for getting back into writing and creating the D&D/LOTR type of world I've been sorta playing with in my mind for years.
I kept waiting for Splatt to say, "Happy little trees." but was disappointed. Not in the game though, the game looks pretty cool. If there isn't a race that can build on swamp, desert, or mountains it obviously needs lizardfolk, dragon men, and bird-people (angel-kin?). With all these horrible disasters you can inflict, I do hope that there's a chance that the civilizations develop some way to protect themselves eventually.
Love this game :) But you need to set your own goals, experiment etc. Like trying to help one empire against an other. Blessing a monster and see if it survives against an army etc. Many cool and fun situations can occur too :)
you got the updraft wrong, regarding rain though... it rains on the other side of the mountain/hill, due to sudden air pressure drop. Years ago, I picked up a meteorology book for farmers, at a hospice... it was one of those older books, where they described everything with words and graphs... no pictures
This is an interesting looking one. Definitely on my radar. Probably going to wait to buy it till the winter sales though, a should at least be able to save a few quid on it.
@@dh2054 Thanks. I have a pretty fertile mind TBH, and could see myself spending ages just terraforming my world. That being said, I wouldn't mind getting a bit cheaper.
I think as you added a self sustaining "common purpose" in the Zeds, they're going to have to band together to overcome it. Once the Zeds are wiped out though, they'll likely turn on each other. It really depends what kind of Orks you have. In most fantasy lore, Orks are prone to War, and in some lore they even need war to survive. Very interesting game. I think I'm going to have to pick this up. BTW, did you check out Melvor Idle yet? I'm really into that at the minute.
This game reminds me of events of modern day ruinarch where a human kidnapped an elf for being a cultist was declared a criminal the elf was whipped and released to avoid a diplomatic incident and the human involved in the kidnapping left and founded a bandit camp and was arrested by the elf kingdom and that the story of Gordon the Marauder so far.
Do things like the civilization will gain some advancement in knowledge after seeing people that are infected could spread their disease to others so in the future they will kill them in advance or trying to heal them to prevent the disease from spreading. i hope they do cause that would be really cool
well no, the only thing civilizations will do is kill off zombies that have started attacking them, but if you spawn a plague doctor in a kingdom then they'll start purging diseases and curing people
I came for a game preview, I stayed for the geology lesson.
Yeah when he starts talking about geology I just can’t resist.
Is he a real life geologist or something?
@@cokedealer2084 I believe he has a geology degree. He has been doing the TY thing well before going to college so not sure he worked as a geologist.

Been playing since before they added different types of civilizations. Absolutely love the massive growth & direction of this game
I got it on my remind me list when it was in the app store but wasnt downloadable yet, Ive played it weekly since then and I have to say the amount of love that was poured into this game is amazing, it was more of a passion project that became super successful
I love these games that evolve and ‘live’… nothing else like it and this one is done very well.

Splat being bob Ross here adding a forest and tiny details.
Happy little cataclysmic events.

Way too realistic for me this game!
Getting serious Bob Ross Vibes from Splat with this one.

Bob Nye The Indie Review Guy, lol.
This game has been on my radar for a while now. It seems really fun, might check it out later. Thank you Splatt;
Honestly not really much to the game at all, not worth the price.
@@Yue_Jin it's just a few buck on Android and it's exactly the same. IMO it's worth the price there.

There are several mods for this game. Most of them enhance the player's experience rather than adding new creatures
This looks really good, and it has massive potential. Especially if they allow the community to create content and support this with the right tools.
The game lives off the community. Lol, It's where the devs get all their ideas from. It also has a steam workshop and mod support.
I like how one of your options as GOD is to give the people coffee
Ah yes, humanities super power in fantasy settings...excessive breeding.
*Smooth jazz plays in the background*
I like the random nation founded in the corrupted lands that Splatty completely misses.
Just slowly building and vibing.
I liked watching Splattercat make alternate reality Michigan.
Gotta love that necromancer, but I wonder what happened to that evil wizard and the demons. But the zombie plague spread is hilarious.
The mages tend to teleport and die pretty often, I'd bet that some random guy in one of the kingdoms has the evil mage's staff of power
