I grew up near Vancouver and honestly I tire of this stereotype. I get it, it rains a lot. What happens though, is it rains for two weeks, then it is sunny for two weeks, as compared with other places where it rains every other day or two. People only ever recall the rain however. Statistically Vancouver has: 45" over 165 rain days per annum. Compare this with New York: 50" over 122 days. And perhaps Los Angeles (a desert) which has: 15" over 35 days, though in reality it falls almost all at once, (which is why there are ENORMOUS cement ditches (in Terminator 2) to prevent massive flooding.) I guess it's what you are used to. But get over it, there is a lot more to be said for Vancouver than just rain.

"I did not hear you" to "you poor thing!" to "quit being a jerk" to "I feel badly that you feel badly" and many other sentiments besides.

Omg I laughed so hard. I love Canada and Canadians. STORY TIME
A girlfriend and I drove through several Canadian provinces to hit the Alcan highway and drive home to Alaska. I had a 3 and 1 year old, she had a 2 year old. We were driving her new Jeep wagoner, child seats weren’t law and just starting to make an appearance, so we loaded all our luggage on top so we could put down the back seats leaving a huge area for them. We put pillows, blankets, and toys with them, the cooler under the legs of the front passenger seat, and off we went. We were 22 and had absolutely total confidence and absolutely no sense.
We had no idea speed limit signs were not in mph so we made really good time on the paved roads. Fortunately every Royal Canadian Police Officer we saw was at a gas station-boy that Jeep Wagoner V-8 sucked down the gas when you were doing 80mph-or in a restaurant. Every Canadian we met was so nice to us. At every motel we stayed there was always someone that would run out to help us haul all that luggage off the roof into our rooms. Several times they opened the closed restaurant so we and the kids could eat. At one motel a lady drove to her home in the morning and got her milk so we could fill bottles for the baby that day and there was always someone to top our cooler off with ice. Everyone was horrified when we tried tip them for their kindness which was good as the cash we had for tips went for gas. Luckily the Jeep would take unleaded gas which then was half the price of regular; you just had to find the pump which was normally off in a back corner somewhere.
All went fantastically, the kids so happy in their big carpeted play area, then we hit the Alcan Highway HELL. One thousand three hundred and ninety miles of unPAVED, rutted, potholes that could swallow a small car, crossing streams, of HELL. The babies were getting beat to death in the back and only laughed when they actually flew in the air. We took the 3 sleeping bags-hey we thought we could hit snow-shoved on the floor under the folded down back seats out on the area on top of each other. Lined the sides with the pillows and pulled our heavy coats out of our suitcases to pad the inside of the metal tail gate. That helped some but we would all get hot and couldn’t put down the windows do to the dust flying up from the road. NO AC IN JEEP. The two babies traveled only in diapers, my 3 year old son in his underwear.
We eventually reached home in Alaska. I was more tired than I had ever been but damn we made it with 3 live kids. Canada has always been a warm amazing memory.

@@mohitoness Yup, Canada is still plenty friendly. It is definitely more noticeable in small towns. A few years back I was driving from Vancouver to Winnipeg (in the summer) for my cousins wedding. In the Fraser Valley nearly every gas station is 24hr, it didn't even occur to me that in Saskatchewan gas stations close at 9 or 10pm. So I drive into this little town 10 minutes off the freeway, and the lady opened the station back up for me to fill up. Super nice, otherwise I'd have been stuck until the next morning.

Your description of Winnipeg reminds me of what my folks said about the place when they lived at Gimli, Manitoba. A level of cold you can't imagine unless you've been there. Regularly -30 to -40 and with the wind chill it can drop to -100.
Cars that have to be plugged in at night to stop the battery freezing. You basically don't go out when it's that cold and if you're shopping when a snow storm hits you can be trapped in the mall for days until it passes.
As warm weather Brits i don't know how they coped with it.
