  • HugeQuiz's new "blackout" geography quizzes feature some surprisingly tricky categories to fill in, with the goal being to clear an entire 5 by 5 grid of cities. I hope you enjoy my attempts!

    That's so weird about Soweto and Johannesburg. South Africa doesn't even consider Soweto a city -- it's a township. It actually even stands for SOuth WEstern TOwnships.
    Love seeing these kinds of videos, though, just to mix it up with the Geoguessr stuff!

      so my source citypopulation lists populations for "Places" in SA. Soweto is the largest such Place. Places make up the metro areas, and since I base populations on city proper so I'm not double counting, that's why SA is this way. There are actually Johannesburg and Pretoria and other "Places" much smaller than the metro areas.

    That's a fun new quiz format! I, for one, embrace all the [Oak/Pine/Rock/River] [Park/Grove/Island/Side]'s of the world.

    I can't believe my city got mentioned in this - big up Milton Keynes! People love to say we got nothing, but ya know - we got roundabouts, red bull racing f1, the iconic concrete cows and more!

      @@ChicagoGeographer Also, here I am, missing Mar del Plata (also Sanliurfa, Turkey) on expert 50k circle coverage. And... I felt the immense complexity of emotions when you get obscure stuff but miss the obvious stuff. Apparently the Sporcle community calls it Sporclitis

    hey, great video as usual, you forgot some more (or less) obvious ones in ZA like Kimberley, klerksorp, Welkom, Nelspruit or Pietermaritzburg (also Benoni, Germiston, Vereeniging, rustenburg, krugersdorp for Pretoria suburbs)

    Some American city’s have ridiculous names.Rolling Meadows?Riverside?Rock Island?Are you kidding me??😭

    • @ChicagoGeographer
      @ChicagoGeographer  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Don't see how any of those are ridiculous, they're just names based on geography of their location which is a universally human thing to do

    • @sharpieman2035
      @sharpieman2035 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The ridiculous ones were Peru, Dallas City, Paris, East St Louis, Princeton. All such places where you will have people asking “That X?” and you have to say “No, X, Illinois”.
      Not that this isn’t common in other countries to just copy other place names, but it is quite silly regardless. Places like Illinois and Texas are especially notorious for this.

      I don't find those all that ridiculous. Borrowing place names makes sense. Names based on geography also makes sense. It does mean that the US has numerous places with the name Washington, Franklin, Clinton, etc.
      That's much better than, say, the Mexican state of Oaxaca, which has (according to Wikipedia):
      - 41 cities/towns named San Juan
      - 53 Santa Marias
      - 32 San Pedros
      - 29 San Miguels (loser)
      Now, I grew up in Illinois and have lived in Texas since 1992, so, my understanding of what's "normal" is skewed. I get the impression that the US just has more place names, period, relative to similarly dense areas in other countries.
