The Revolutions of 1848 where a series of uprisings and separatist wars focused against the old monarchical order all over continental Europe. The heaviest conflicts occurred in France, the German states, the Italian peninsula, as well as in central and eastern European areas especially Hungary. These Revolutions where a ideological continuation of the French revolution and the industrial revolution in England. This liberal and progressive current had heavily entangled itself with burgeoning nationalist movements. They aimed for the establishment of republican rule and the destruction of the established monarchies, or their degradation into controlled constitutional monarchies. Essential was also the liberalisation of the economy, the removal of local economic and fiscal autonomies, the remains of the old guilds as well as religious restrictions. Just as important was also the abolition of religious authority and social rules. This tendency was especially heavily directed against the Catholic church. The main centres of these uprisings where urban areas, with the biggest support originating from the wealthy bourgeoisie. Rural areas tended to support the Kaiser and provided the most volunteers for the Imperial Austrian Army. The imperial loyalists where in a extremely difficult position. The army was tied down all over the empire and was in many cases severely under supplied and outnumbered, with parts of the army in Vienna and Hungary deserting to the revolutionaries. What followed was a bloody and prolonged struggle in which the loyalists where able to secure Vienna and the centre of the realm, after victories in northern Italy, south-western Hungary and Bohemia. After this Hungary and its revolutionaries became the main focus of the war, with the minorities within the Hungarian kingdom (Croats, Serbs, Slovaks, Romanians, Ukrainians, .etc) siding with the imperial loyalists. The Revolution was decisively crushed in 1849. Especially after Russian troops intervened on the side of the Austrian Kaiser every hope for a successful revolution was over. The leaders of the various uprisings where executed for high treason, whilst simple supporters and soldiers where pardoned. One of the main results of these revolutions in the Austrian Empire was the abdication of Kaiser Ferdinand in favour of his nephew Franz Joseph I, who subsequently initiated a harsh reaction and a distinct anti-liberal legislation in the first years of his reign.

"Now my interpretation of this is that hard Marxism, strict Marxist Leninism and various anarchistic and other variants often to one side of it, have failed, but the trajectory of the ideology itself has succeeded, has morphed, and has transfigured itself in a new way. You have the left has come into the center, taken it, turned it around, and what we’d call liberalism now, either with a small or large “L,” is not the liberalism of fifty to sixty years ago. It’s not even the liberalism of a hundred and fifty years ago. The truth is that the people who led Palmerstone’s Liberal Party had views which in the middle of the nineteenth century, could be construed as people who, if not to the right of this gathering, then wouldn’t have been too far away. The Protestant ideological moralism that underpinned liberal ideas of a traditional sort has been ripped out. One of the ironic problems with Absolute monarchy is that if you look at the historical development of Absolute monarchy is that for the power to be centralised it required a managerial ruling class. The managerial ruling classes throughout the 18th-20th century under Absolute monarchy then questioned why they were still allowing a person above them to rule when they could quite simply get rid of the monarchy and have the managerial class themselves (under the aesthetics of liberal democracy) to rule and take power of the state instead which is largely/partly where the last 400 years of decay has somewhat come from. The spiritual decay has lasted for thousands upon thousands of years and unfortunately I don't think monarchy is the answer, however, IT should be entirely respected as an idea and as an ideal! I support absolute monarchy in a Julius Evola sense of the concept of monarchy but we don't live in the era where that is possible (put extremely simplistically -- and it won't be possible for the next hundreds of thousands of years to come...). So until the golden era comes about, we have to make do and that is nationalism of the 1930's with some updates is the solution and it would have been the solution if the Axis/Central powers/the Confederacy had at any point won their respective wars. Keith Wood's has mentioned basically what I'm referencing here in his recent video. I'm a devout Catholic and a monarchist reactionary, but I'm also Polish. And it hurts my soul to see Habsburg loyalists fighting Hungarians. Especially the intervention of hated Russians is bitter. I'm wondering, however, wasn't Hungarian defeat for the better? Austria-Hungary was a very fair concept - which honestly could have only been pushed further, with more nations gaining autonomy. We know about Magyarization - this fact is the hardest to endure. It's a shy thought, but what if Habsburg Liberal Catholicism and tolerance was a blessed alternative, compared to a complicated option of Hungarian nationalism? In other words, maybe Hungarians (and new states in general, we weren't better) shouldn't be fully trusted and given too much power? Ah, I just wish I could see nations getting rid of unnecessary squabbles and uniting under the cross. Let us all be brothers and sisters in Christ. Loose thoughts. In any case, even though I'm from the "Russian" Poland, I always felt spiritual connection to the Habsburgs.
I feel truly blessed to have my third name after Emperor Charles I and King Charles III/IV. Karl of Austria. The lesson Austria taught me is that nationalism is a poison, maybe not as a rule, but in most cases leads to evil and stands against the Christian values.
