  • In this video, I try shooting low light photography with a 15 year old Canon PowerShot A590 IS point and shoot camera. For only 10 dollars is this camera worth getting if you're a young kid without a phone or someone who can't afford to buy an expensive camera?

When I was in photography school 1972-1976 One of my courses, in a senior level, made us use and 89 cent Retina plastic camera. That was the new price not used as you are portraying. We had only two shutter speeds and there was metal plates with differential sized holes which acted as our f/stop. The lens was plastic but it had a dreamy quality to it. Sometimes images can have too much detail. I love shooting on a foggy day just for that reason. We had to push or pull our film processing to make the camera perform. It handled Sunny 16 ok but much beyond that was a challenge. We had to be on the top of our game and use all the skills we had learned to give us images we could be proud of. We had to make a portfolio of the semesters work. The course was outstanding! It made you think, look for light and texture, contrast and composition. All these years later what I learned still rings loudly in my head. Truly learn to use the camera you have.

With CHDK you can shoot DNG RAW with old Canon cameras. Try it!!
And you can make a lot different things, like bracketing, time lapses and so on...

I enjoyed this video. I am a believer that the photographer matters more than the camera in creating great photos. I was thinking of buying one of these Canon A590's . It can be bought for $10 to $20. It has PASM control and a viewfinder. The optical quality was reviewed as fairly decent for the price when the camera was new. It's a Canon. The graphite grey body is rather attractive.

You can load SHDK custom firmware on this, which will let it spit out raw .DNG files. You get a good bit of shadow recovery out of these. The high ISO performance is so bad on this camera, I think it's sometimes preferable to just pump the exposure in Lightroom. I also suspect that this camera has some baked in noise reduction that smears the details on things like leaves. The .DNGs might preserve these details better, but I haven't fully tested it.

Yup. I loaded the CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit) on mine to get access to the Raw files. The alternate firmware is easy to install and the change is reversible. It also enables you to create a remote wired trigger and run Lua scripts to do time lapse stuff - that would be one way for this camera to create HD video

Just found one of these, deffinitly going to try this trick out, it might stand no chance against my Rebel T6 but it's adorable and ultra small

How do you load this software? I have quite a few canon P&S id love to try this on..

@@Streetsupra88 Check out the CHDK wiki and find your particular model. On my A590 you can copy the firmware onto an SD card. Then when you select firmware update in the camera menu it will reboot into CHDK.

The fact that it takes AA batteries is really welcome. I guess it must have been one of the last ones to do so. You can just take some charged up rechargeables and some readily available regular single use ones and you’re good for days, even in remote places. It does need also need a button cell too, just to keep the date and time, but that lasts for ages and you can still take pictures without it. There’s a lot to like about these little cameras, such as full manual control and a zooming optical viewfinder. You can even obtain an attachment which fits on the body which allows for use of filters, and access to other devices (such as negative or slide duplicators), etc. I’ve taken some good pictures with the ones I have and would still consider using them.

I really like your story, Rowdy Flyer. Machines of all kinds, pumped out of factories, have removed deep understanding from many crafts. You had a very good teacher, with your 89 cent camera lesson. What a great lesson, you still remember :-)

Or 3$ in a thrift store, in my case, online prices aren't always realistic or sane, secondhand stores can have lots of odd surprises

Have you ever taken an iPhone photo and looked at the levels (in Photoshop or Krita)? I'm not sure why it is, maybe some programming, but the levels often come out all spiky, which means that iPhone photos are much more of a pain to color correct... in my experience anyway!
