    So this is the last year for the very loud V8 engines in the F1 world championship. When in 2006 we had the passage from the screaming 22000+rpm V10 engines to the V8s well most of the people (including me) already looked with wistful eye to the past. In those years I learned to love the V8s too, with their ability to open your ears during each fly bys. They aren't as beautiful as the V10s but they can give you some goosebumps easily. But next year we'll discover the new turbo V6s. Well, turbo isn't considered the best sound' friend and moreover the engines will be smaller, so expectations are not the best but maybe they could surprise us.
    My final questio is: will we miss the loud sounds of the V8s?

    I went to the 2014 Belgian grand prix, the first season of the new quiet engines. We couldn't actually hear the F1 cars when the television helicopter flew over us. I just remember feeling incredibly disappointed. I don't think I was the only one either, on the first lap of the race as they were coming round, the crowd started to cheer, as you'd expect them too, but suddenly everyone went into an awkward silence when we all realised the cheering was completely drowning out the noise of the cars. I actually caught the moment on video with my phone... I guess I should upload it at some point...
    The GP2 cars were much, much louder.

      LukewMorgan bullshit. I was there too and the cars' sound was easily hearable. I liked it not to use earprotection. I had to use it last year and the sound is slightly different in real life. and btw, I come for F1 racing, not the engines in F1...

      take a look at my channel for the footage

    • @LukewMorgan
      @LukewMorgan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Thomas van Asperen When I watch F1 for the racing, I watch it at home, on TV... Where I can actually see the racing.
      When you go there live, all you can see is 2, maybe 3 corners of the track. You don't "see" a lot of racing when you go there.
      So when I go live, I go for the atmosphere, and the sound used to be a very big part of that. These new F1 engines now lack the glorious sound they once had, it's totally ruined the live experience for me. The fact you no longer have to wear ear protection says a lot, and you can call bullshit as much as you want, helicopters flying overhead and cheering crowds still drown out the sound of modern F1 engines because they're too bloody quiet.

    • @thomasvanasperen9097
      @thomasvanasperen9097 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      LukewMorgan I dont think it really affects the atmosphere. i Mean, im not only coming for the sound! I am there to support the drivers, to see every little thing live. everything that you normally see on tv or on pictures. its like hearing a lot of Paris, the only thing is that the Eiffel Tower is gone. of course its a shame, but it is still an amazing experience of you finally got there. and if the engine sound really affects your thoughts about F1, then you should follow another sport. your no longer a true F1 fan then. I like F1 as long as every little detail got me extremely interested.

    I am so disappointed with FIA and what they have done to OUR beloved Formula One. The current crop of cars sound like moaning Honda Accords with fart-can mufflers. The rules are ridiculously overbearing - can you imagine an NHRA Top Fuel drag racer being penalized for using more than five engines in a season, or for changing transmissions too many times? The rules prohibit engines revving over a certain speed, but they can't even reach that RPM because of fuel flow restrictions! The FIA is taking the "sport" out of motor-sports. As fans, WE should have the final say... and we actually do, if we vote with our wallets by not buying tickets to F1 events, complaining to sponsors, and that's only scratching the surface of what we could do!

      unfortunately we can never go back to that era. F1 has massive budgets and the speed of change moves so damn fast. Competitors as constantly copying each other and trying to find the tiniest advantage with hundreds of people employed to innovate but also research the competition. Unlimited development would be a disaster for everything but engineering geeks. Would be boring to have cars finishing minutes apart. We need very specific constraints in the rules and these amazing engineers still find ways to set their machines apart!

    These and especially the V10s were the last great racing engines, F1 from 2014 is a joke, more like a secondary formula there to support the main event which just wont come now.
    I dont care a toss about hearing skids and wheel lock ups, i'd rather hear a nice loud high revving engine at full chat.
    Words really cant express my disappointment in how its all turned out, F1 has been my life long passion for 40 yrs but now i dont know where to turn.

    F1 hasn't been the same since all the concentration on "reliability" and (ha ha), "reducing costs". Much of the excitement came from never being sure whether your favourite driver would make it to the finish if they were leading comfortably or whether their engine would go up in a cloud of smoke. And the press on regardless spirit, where even if that did happen in qualifying, you could just hop into the spare car or bong another engine in and go out and claim pole. All this nonsense now about being penalised for using the spare car and what have you.

    I know the V6 Turbos are going to sound even worse so I shouldn't really complain but I'm of the opinion that the V8's only sounded reasonably good before 2009 when they introduced the KERS system and the 18,000rpm limiter and ruined the natural torque of the engine, more noise is made under breaking now then during acceleration you have to go back to the early 2000's when they where using V10's with no rev restrictions or cheap power boosting systems like KERS and DRS to hear when they blow your head off at full throttle, they sound rather flat now still I dread to think what next years cars will sound like, my Dyson hoover will probably have more of a ring to it lol. Bring back the days of the V10's PLEASE or even better V12's and stop this enviro crap, F1 was never designed to help the environment and in my opinion it should stay that way; dirty, smelly, and unashamedly LOUD!!!

      V8 engines sucked, they weren't that powerful (relatively speaking) and they lacked torque as well. They were also several years old by the time this video was filmed. I miss the old 3.0 V10's and the older 3.5 litre engines but the shitty 2.4 V8's can go to hell.

    I think that F1 cars should just have turbo hayabusa engines that are completely race-built. You could probably get 600+ horsepower from that engine, plus the KERS system. Hayabusa engines are fuel-efficient, have low emissions, and they sound amazing.

      You can make any engine fast. NA, turbo, diesel, electric it doesnt matter its purly the regulations that dictates how fast the engines will be not the typ of engine. They could totally run these 2014 engines at 15000rpm and produce 1000bhp+ but theres a fuelflow limit preventing them from doing it.

    I always had a bias towards the V8s from watching ChampCar here in the US. 2013 was the year I got into F1 after seeing Rush in theaters and getting F1 2013 for my birthday. Those cars with the V8s, especially the Lotus, which is my favorite F1 car of all-time, is what I vision when I hear someone say Formula One. However, speed, performance, and technological evolution are more important in F1. I personally don't think the V6 hybrids are as bad as people always make them out to be. I've heard worse sounds from an engine to be honest. My only problem is that they're way too expensive to build and God help you if you can't get it right (like Honda couldn't for a few years). The big advantage with those V8s was that they were cheaper, so more money to improve aero and such. It gave midfielders a chance to scrap with the top 3 and sometimes beat them if they played their cards right. Only problem was that they weren't as reliable. So it's kind of a double-edged sword. Less reliable V8s that sound great vs. reliable V6 hybrids that sound meh. Something has to give either way.
