The year was 1970, I was looking for a taxi, I was on the east side of Washington square park across from NYU buildings. suddenly a cab pulled over ahead of me, as i ran up to catch it the door opened and one of the handsomest men i have ever seen with eyes that looked bright lavender stepped out looked me straight in the eyes said hello and walked away. I jumped in the cab told the driver where i wanted to go and asked if that was Peter Lawford which he confirmed . A very vivid memory .

Lawford also had a love affair with Dorothy Dandridge. He wanted to marry her, but they were both warned an interracial marriage would end both of their careers. She also had an unhappy, abusive childhood. I wonder if this bonded them. He was supposed to read the eulogy at her funeral, but he broke down and was unable to do it.

There's a bio-book out called "The Man Who Kept the Secrets" about Lawford. I read it back in the 90's. It speculates on what he knew about the Kennedy's, Marylin Monroe, Frank Sinatra and certain mob figures. File under "True Crime". He took many secrets to his grave. In the late 60's and 70's he made cameos on variety shows, but he wasn't that good on Hollywood Squares.

So many artists suffer early trauma. I’ve been a stage actor for decades and I cannot recall a single actor who didn’t suffer from feeling unwanted, hyper criticized, abused or neglected in childhood. The arts are an escape from a reality that is unbearable. I started disappearing into my pretend stories in my head by the time I was seven.

Reporters tried to get Peter to talk about the Kennedys and Marilyn but he took his secrets to his grave. He was offered a 7 figure book deal and tried to start the book and hired a writer to help him write his memoir but quickly realized he could not go through with it as the publisher would expect him to write about his experiences with the Kennedy family and he knew he could never betray the only family he ever had, even though they shunned him after JFK death

This script REALLY needs an editor. The narration is good as is the information, but telling us repeatedly that Sinatra had a helipad made is, um, overkill, as is the bouncing around from year to year and then back again. Try telling one cohesive story that follows a clear chronology. I mean, there is no mention of how he even met the Kennedys, much less Pat, at all.

That is the best statement to be made about these latter day profiles of movie icons. The basic trouble is that those who make them seem to approach the people with an established agenda to destroy the memories of the public images of these people. While there may have been unusual things going on in their lives, outsiders are not in the position to know what was going in the lives of these people that led them in the directions they took.

Basically he died an Alcoholic. Because Sinatra threw him out of “The Rat Pack", and his Movie career dried up completely.
Compared to JFK, Sinatra was a complete Control Freak. You don’t screw with Frank. FYI, Dean Martin thought all politicians were phony hypocrites and Sammy Davis Junior was very upset that JFK refused him attendance at his Presidential inauguration as his wife was white.
A side note, Sammy Davis Junior made a joke about Sinatra. Frank had him written out of that upcoming movie. Steve McQueen took that role and then his Movie career went to the A-List, with “The Magnificent Seven” and he never looked down again.
    Frank gives and takes away.

That's for sure. She did everything she could to destroy his career when she showed up in Hollywood and her demands weren't met. She signed up as one of Louis B Mayer's spies and made up stuff, which sent Louis into his psycho-studio head mode. I believe he messed with Lawford's ego & mind by putting him in sub-par movies, hauling him into his office for humiliating dressing downs the way he destroyed Judy, John Gilbert, and anyone else he felt threatened by. How sad 😢 that was a very depressing story. It is really traumatizing to have an adult force a child into having sex with them regardless if they are a man or woman, but I can sympathize with Peter over this. It is also terrible to raise a child that you despise and the effects of a bad mother can also stay with you for all your life. I wish I had known him and could have been his friend before all this happened to him, surely he never knew what it was like to be loved by anyone and I can also sympathize with him on that as well. How difficult it is to never have anyone really love you, and to be raised by someone who belittles and shames you throughout your life. If his mother hated him so much she should have put him up for adoption, surely he would have had a different life and may never had been a film star, but he would have been adopted by someone who actually loved him and it is better that way. They say it is better to know love and have it lost, than to have never had known love at all, and that point is clear in his life.

Lawford stayed with Victor Lownes at Stocks in his twilight years. He would order breakfast from the bar or occasionally make an appearance in dressing gown and slippers. He always had the same breakfast, as many Martinis as it took to get unconscious.
He would sometimes order toast or eggs but mostly not be interested by the time they were ready. A couple of times I served food in his room for him, one time entering to bring his breakfast I found him spark out face down totally starkers in the middle of the carpet.
He was always quite ok with the barstaff but obviously beset by a host of demons.

Ok, you've made me mad there Age! Did you reread or listen to this before you put it up?! His "mother" was a MONSTER to the point where when he got a movie contract and she didn't get one, she started telling the studio and anybody she could get to listen to her that he was gay, a thief, a drunk, a gambler, but luckily they didn't listen, she was banned from the studio completely. He is one of my favorite actors and you're making it sound like he was completely untalented! As you can tell from the things that others are saying here, people still love him and his work. And even when he was older, like when I met him, he was still HOT!!! Just catch your tone on this, he was a star before and after the Rat Pack. Mediocre doesn't describe him at all! He was kind and sweet and handsome as hell, and I was so lucky to have met him.

    • @princehorselover9706

Yes, aren't you lucky omg. But mediocre is correct. Was he sweet and kind to Marilyn? Probably not. His own words "I should've known better"...they used her and abused her. SHE was sweet & kind. Look at someone's true character, not just that they're HOT. He was a womanizer, a cheater and a horrible father and "allegedly" a pimp. And lots of people have horrific childhoods. Marilyn included.

Lawford was the poor man's Cary Grant. He was not that great as an actor, but he did possess a certain, naive charm. In one of his final films 'Angels Brigade' he played a crime lord living in a mansion in LA. It struck me, upon seeing this low budget Charlie's Angel rip-off, that they were paying Peter in cocaine, and that for that price, Peter was letting them film in his own home. Later, I read that the last individual Marilyn Monroe called was Peter and that when she told him she had ODed he blew it off as just a cry for attention and hung up on her. It was because of this, according to the book, that Marilyn was left to die.
