Old silver wolf here, can’t sleep on the ground anymore, started sleeping exclusively in a hammock for camping. Once I realized how comfortable I could be now because of the hammock I bit the bullet and invested in a really good Warbonnet hammock with a down underquilt and top quilt and a good asymmetrical tarp. It was worth it, opens up a lot more camping opportunities I probably would have passed on before because I just couldn’t sleep on the ground.
A couple things I’ve found that helped: (1) Tree straps with daisy chained openings every 8 inches or so and carabiners on the end of the hammock suspension. Makes it quick and easy to adjust and you don’t have to mess with threading straps through buckles. (2) When you lay in the hammock, lay with your feet slightly to one side of the ridgeline and your head slightly to the opposite side (if you looked down from above, the ridgeline would be cutting a diagonal across your body with your feet to the left and head to the right).

Great video Blackie! The toggle idea is a winner! Here's a tip ... Walmart carries a CAMP PILLOW in the camping section that contains a pillow inside a stuff sack. If you take the pillow out of the sack the pillow kind of sucks buuuuuuuut .... if you keep the pillow INSIDE the stuff sack and use the stuff sack as the "pillow case" .... it's PERFECT for a hammock and your neck will LOVE IT! I sleep like a baby with that camp pillow in my hammock!!!

Great tips and advice for we "silver wolves", thanks Blackie! I'm up in rural NY and the Fall colors are at peak. There is a crisp feel to the morning air, no bugs, and it's the BEST time to be in the woods. I'm prepping for an overniter now.

Hello Blackie ~ love your videos and I love my Blackbeard haversack. In 1957, I was a young Boy Scout in California and our Troop Leader was a retired Warrant Officer. Somehow, he acquired military “ jungle hammocks” which he gave to all of the boys. Now they were made out of canvas and the grommets were made out of brass. But, it had bug nets and a rain fly. It was not an ultra light piece of kit by any means, but it was comfortable. Very comfortable. Bottom line, I’ve been sleeping in hammocks for 64 years. I don’t have that jungle hammock any more, but I do have a Warbonnet Ridge Runner and a couple of less expensive hammocks. I don’t sleep as well in a gathered hammock because it squeezes my shoulders. The Warbonnet has spreaders that allows my shoulders to spread out. BTW, I love your toggle for sitting up. I never thought of that, but you can bet it is going to be added to my hammock kit. Thanks for all you do for our bushcrafter community.

    Nice video.
I'm only 45 years young. But, I've had rheumatoid arthritis causing joint pain, swelling and stiffness since age 17. It forced me out of work at age 30 and out of the woods at age 34. But, I discovered modern hammocks about 2 years ago. I've been able to camp twice now with my wife after more than a decade of no outdoor activity. What a blessing. (Still working out some issue I didn't know about at first... Like I'm 6'-3" and so should've gone with an 11' or 12' long hammock instead of the 10'-6" one I have now. But, compared to not getting out at all, I'll take the issue of probably needing a new, longer hammock.)

One of the best parts of the hammock is the ease of site selection. It no longer matters what the ground is like. You can sleep on the side of a steep rocky mountain as long as you have two trees. No more waking up in a puddle when it rains. No more clearing the ground or prepping a bed before you put up a tent. Setting up camp goes so much faster.

Hi Blackie...I'm really enjoying your posts for us old guys. This 80 year old Silver Wolf gave up sleeping on the ground 20 years ago. If I can't sling a hammock I don't go. Simple as that1 I've been collecting hammocks for a very long time, mostly from Mexico, Central, and South America. I've slept very comfortably for weeks at a time in my Hennessy jungle hammock in the Amazon. Your introduction of the benefits of hammocks to the new guys was very well done and I'll bet we've got a lot of new converts. After all these years in a hammock I have lots of secret tips that I'd be happy to share if anybody's interested. Please keep up the good work.

I hope you don't mind but I shared this to my FB page. Just to show my friends and family what it is I do. I hate tents fer a variety of reasons. But give me a hammock and a tarp, if needed, and set up right, I can sleep . The nice thing about a hammock is that it accommodates any sleeping position. I usually end up in the fetal position and that works out great in a hammock. I can and have done the cowboy thing and will do if I have to. But give me a hammock any time. Best sleep ever

Well beside hammocks I use a Walkingtrailer from RadicalDesign called Wheelie. These are special made expedition Walkingtrailers for onandoffroad as well. Walked 30000 km in recent years. Also across America and whole of Europe. Makes it much easier as a backpack was more from the past.
To release the daisy chains lookshard and as a old gem we want it easy. And as I don't like whoopyslings I made from dyneema kind of rope but then with ropeladderknots every 25 cm. Easy to handle....

Wonderful video - thanks a lot. I'm 70 years old now and thankfully no problems with sleeping on the ground as well as getting down and up again - but my miles start to show.
Biggest problem for silver wolves is the cold from the ground that ruins your bones and joints, so I use a raised bed or a hammock for sleeping. I'm not familiar with your climate, but where I live it gets quite cold at night, even in summertime, so you want a hammock with a sleeve underneath to put some insulation in, that doesn't get compressed by your weight.
    BTW:
    1. if you happen to find only small trees, no big deal, just cut down a tall enough tree and tie it between the two like a ridge-pole, so they can't sag or lean inwards. If one tree isn't enough, cut down two trees and join them by sawing a 2ft. section half way, split them and lash them together with polyester-paracord (minimal stretch!).
    2. your knot actually is a DOUBLE PRUSIK, the single Prusik is only two times around. The single Prusik works just fine, if the lines are not too slippery and your loop-material is significantly smaller than the ridge line. If they are nearly the same dimension, you need the double Prusik.
    3. why dont you leave the Prusik loop and the toggle attached to the ridge line, if you need it anyways?
    Stay safe and take care

    @Stoney_AKA_James ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great tips Blackie!
I have used a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC double botton hammock for several years and here are some additional tips:
Buy a hammock that includes a bug net AND a double bottom.
Snakeskins are beneficial for storing and deploying the tarp.
A double bottom (layered) hammock is for placing an insulating pad, which will always remain in place, and it will help keep mosquitoes from biting through vs a single bottom.
For really cold and windy conditions, an underquilt will keep the cold out.
Synthetic vs Down insulation depends on wet or dry climate and how much you can afford (down is mose expensive, lighter but not as good in wet climates, whereas synthetic is heavier and bulkier but remains its insulating properties when wet.)
A ground cloth is handy when getting out of the hammock and good for keeping gear off the ground.
    Tarp tips:
Buy a tarp at least 4 feet longer than your hammock, this extra length can be used to close off the ends, or buy a tarp designed with "doors" which will keep the interior dry and warmer.
I also modified my for camping on the ground by sewing 550-cord loops on the bottom corners and center points for tent pegs and then 550-cord loops sewn on the mosquito netting to keep it raised.

Thanks Blackie, Some tips I never picked up on Hammocks. And I have watched probably every "Shug" u-tube vid on Hammocks he ever made. The Toggle tip on the Prussic I found myself but used Zing it for the prussic on the ridgeline and Mule tape for a Looped handle to help my old bones get out of the hammock. Never seen that tip till this vid. I used the "Eric Hansens" on line ,Hammock hang calculator and measured my paces on Various tree distances to get a better Idea of where to start my tree tie off heights. Been sleeping in a One wind 11' for 3.5 years now, EVERY NIGHT. Used the calculator to drill the holes in my walls for the best fit with the distance. Remembering that the head end should be 1' or at least 6 " below your foot end. That will get you the best spread for foot and shoulders. Then slides you into the sweet spot.

Great video. Thanks for sharing your buckle technique, I have the same hammock and I'm going to use that one for now on. I have also found that a u shaped travel pillow works well for neck support in hammocks. I use a inflatable one with my set up, it's light and packs up small.

Thanks Blackie. Wife and I went camping last weekend and we ended up going home half way thru the night even though we both had 3 inch pads it hurt to much. Definitely gonna try a hammock.

Thank you. I can dig a more comfortable bed than any mattress, But getting up of the ground has become a challenge. I've gotta find a hammock that will hold me.

The more watching your lessons, the more appreciation, thank you! One funny question: did somebody accidentally cut the thin hammock with something sharp in the pocket and fell through or got the butt trapped😅?

    Howdy, Mr. Thomas;
I'm 67 & I learned to sleep on my back earlier this year.
So I'm doing better & I want to share some things I learned.
FIRST, I don't put a pillow under my head, but I cut down a 4" cylinder pillow to about 3" high.
From the end it's shaped like this; /_\.
I put it under my NECK, *not* under my head.
This lets me sleep on my back almost exclusively, which has helped me.
I tried putting a pillow under my knees but it made my back hurt so I quit it.
I really appreciated you're showing how you do it, as I've never tried to sleep in a hammock.
I've tried just laying in one, it was alright but not something I'd have regularly done.
I'd like to see you put a link to the hammock you use in your video description.
In fact, I'd like to see you put links to products you buy & use in most of your videos.
    But that's just me.
    Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

Thank You for all the hammock tips. I'm 62 and messed up my neck, mid back and low back years ago. I have been sleeping with a pad and something rolled up under my neck and knees and it worked well for years. Just not working anymore. So, I have been thinking about going to a hammock. Looking at the OneWind hammock with the attached screen and a DD 9x9 Tarp. This video has convinced me to try it. As always you have such great tips! 🌲🐾

Also, I forgot to recommend an excellent book for hammock campers. It’s written by Derek Hansen and it’s called The Ultimate Hang and it shows new hammock campers everything they need to know. For long-time hammock campers like me, there are many examples and suggestions that are new. Now, for example, I learned from your video two new things from young guys like you: the toggle assist attached to the ridge line and the “rule of thumb” for choosing trees to hang from; diameter the same as your head thickness, or diameter as wide as your hips for trees in saturated ground conditions. Great tips and you can be sure I am adding them to my set-up. Here is a tip that I’ve used in areas where the trees just are too close together, or too far apart. It is just very frustrating. What to do? What to do? You can use your truck or SUV to attach one end of the hammock and then you only need one tree. It is a sleep saver. One last item: you mentioned the ridge line, but there is more to know about ridge lines. You set it up correctly, but didn’t explain that the ridge line is shorter than the hammock. In the book I mentioned, Hansen suggests that 83% of the hammock length is a good place to start, but the actual length is a matter of preference. You have to experiment. It is safe to say, the ridge line is a critical feature of a proper hammock hang.

I wish I would have known this as a kid. I'd visit my mom in the summer and one summer she didn't have a bed for me at the trailer so I slept on a hammock. Eventually I gave up and slept on the floor all summer
