- I'm a high school history teacher, and with Call of Duty Black Ops 6 just around the corner, now is the perfect time to go back and play the older games. In this video I'll explain the historical context behind the events and places featured in the original Call of Duty Black Ops. If you enjoy this video subscribe for more!
Wow thank you everyone for the kind words and encouragement! Regarding Black Ops 2, I did play through the game for the first time recently and it would be cool to talk about some of the flashback levels and their connections to real history. It’s definitely on my list now. Stay tuned for more, thanks again for watching!
I’m curious on what you think of the 2025 they lay out in BO2 as well.
Google “Call of Duty and Our Geopolitical Reality”. There was a great article that just came out comparing BLOPS2 to the modern international relations situation.
Neat, try play Gray Zone Warfare game?
it would be amazing to see you play and talk about battlefield 1 and 5
Another game you should do this for is Red Dead Redemption 2!!
This is the type of teacher you will remember for the rest of your life.Hope there were more people like you
He's not a real "teacher"
@@User_92020and how do you know?
@@User_92020I believe he's a real high school history teacher there's no real reason for him to lie about that and he's teaching and talking about history concepts and events that I learned from my high school history teacher so there's no reason for me to doubt him in my eyes he's a history teacher and even if he's not he pays attention to history and makes good educational entertainment .
Don’t get your hopes up, 99.9% of public school history teachers have no clue what they are even talking about.
@User_92020 teacher or not I learned more than what school has taught me
9:08 I’ll never forget pulling this up during a US History debate in high school over the justification of the Vietnam War. Everyone was focused on the morals of the war, even though the declassified documents existed proving that the Gulf of Tonkin Incident was a false flag. Even my teacher was shocked when I provided them as evidence. I don’t blame my classmates though, our textbooks sure as hell weren’t telling us that.
S/o to the Corbett Report and Black Ops for always having me question history.
Props to you for backing up your points with evidence! Im sure your teacher was proud
I wish I had you as a teacher
I'm gonna print out this comment and put it on the wall of my classroom lol
@@hoodedbeastscan you print out my comment as well, plsss? 🙏🙏🙏🥲
@@hoodedbeasts that's such a cool thing to do bro
@@hoodedbeaststell them to listen to you too.
totally agree!!
You just know his students love him when he holds a class, this is the type of teacher everyone meets once randomly in one class and ls like “where has this guy been for 4 years while I was here”
5:24 the way you complimented this quote with your own factoid and then left it at that was perfection.
This game also has an odd mix of 80's tech
And a 2011 Jeep Wrangler
It was originally meant to be set in the 80s like Black Ops Cold War but it was changed during development to include the Vietnam War
@@Voucher765 Black Ops 7 leading up to 2025 is gonna be so funny
@@Otterdisappointment Same and ironic at the same time
I'm nowhere near an expert on firearms so thanks for pointing this out!
We want more of "History Teacher Explains" content, I think it's a form of content that can work well with a lot of games that use historical events/periods for their theme or time-frame
I get to potentially discover games I had never heard of or never played AND I get to learn historic events and get some context on them
it's a win-win
Imagine walking into history class late and ur teacher is 1v1ing on Nuketown with the L96A1 and Ballistic knife
Black Ops was the first call of duty I ever played properly, I loved it, especially the cold war era it was set in, an historical period I will always have a fascination with. Thank you so much for this video, appreicate it mate
We may need a Math teacher explaining the game as well
The numbers, Mason! What do they mean?!
You should do this for other games too, it's a great and unique way to do a retrospective/retelling of a game

This was my absolute favorite game back in HS. History was my strongest and favorite subject, and that's why I loved this game so much. A great mix of historical events and alternate history. Thank you for bringing me back and giving the explanations in between! I wish I had you as a history teacher! I bet you do a great job connecting games and modern day events with your textbook talking to students! Hope you reach a million subscribers!!!
20:54 Technically, you’d play Cold War, then Black Ops 2 flashbacks. Black Ops 2 was pretty important in the story
i had 2 history teachers that had the same enthusiasm when it comes to teaching their favorite subjects, miss them both dearly 🙌🏾 ( C/O 2019) Both teachers were gamers too
This is what I love, using video games as a jumping off point to teach history and make it an exciting and empathetic story by use of the medium. Love the work you're doing, going even further into depth with the history would be welcome if you want the extra work. 😅💛
I never understood why some people dog on BO1 and WaW for their historically inaccuracies so much
There's a lot of laughable mistakes in them sure, but they're earnest attempts to capture an era in a way that respects the people who were involved, and they incite genuine interest in the history surrounding their fictionalized/dramatized campaigns - which is far more valuable than a historical accuracy rating in my opinion
If it wasn't for these games I probably would've never gone out of my way to learn about the places and events they portrayed - for that I greatly appreciate them
and I appreciate videos like yours alongside them, keep keepin' on friend, you earned my sub
P.S., I would've included BO:CW in this but ehhh, that "know your history" marketing rubbed me the wrong way
They also should do Black Ops 2 , Especially because there were two historical figures depicted that MPLA General Jonas Savambi and Panamanian kingpin Manuel Noreiga who turn actually sued Activision for his portrayal and depiction in the game's campaign
@@Voucher765 That game might be trickier since it has so many futuristic missions and different endings, but yeah it'd be cool to see him analyze the flashbacks
Especially the arrest of Noreiga given how crazy the real story is compared to the game's depiction
@pyrotf2630 Yup I heard that actually found an entire porn stash and altar filled with human organs there when they captured him
CW was good imo. The more it aged the better it good. People dog on it but it's honestly more accurate than WAW/BO1 despite being way too short imo. It's BO2 level accurate. It was fun: Perseus, Gorbachev, Hostage Crisis, Khe Sahn, Reagan, it had some real stuff despite being forced by China to change the trailer. BO6 might be better
@@Metallimad06 Oh don't get me wrong - I agree CW is good, I think it's the strongest CoD entry in quite a while
However the trailers' heavy emphasis on the game's historical inspirations and the tagline "know your history" opened the door to heavier scrutiny than what would be deserving of BO1/BO2/WaW, and the cynic in me finds it harder to forgive the game's many silly mistakes as a result
I still enjoy it though, great addition to the series!
6:02 anytime that music kicks in! It’s go time!!
Wish I had you in highschool for a teacher. Bravo for finding ways to keep the kids intrigued!!!
I played through the campaign for the first time in years (last time I can remember playing it start to finish in one sitting was when I was 15. I'm 23 now). When I heard "Oswald compromised" I felt a chill shoot down my spine. I gained a whole new level of appreciation for this game
What a spectacular video! I love how you use the different scores of the game in context with what's happening on-screen as well. Excellent deep dive!
I was too young to play black ops when it launched I had to play it for myself when I get a 360 in 2016. Two player kino and Nuketown and five the unique gun classes and skins singlehandedly makes it my fav cod so many fun nights I can't tell you about
That music at 11:55 and 20:13 , I know that music anywhere haha.
Also I really love these videos. History has always been one of my favorite topics to study so this kind of stuff makes me happy. I love knowing the real life history that may have inspired the missions.
As in its one of the tracks from Halo CE right? I thought I recognized it too.
Would’ve loved to have a history teacher like you back in high school. One of my favorite subjects along with science.
Wow a history teacher who actually appreciates video games
I remember back in my days of high school when cold war ww2 were topics of discussion i uses to play a lot of world at war and black ops 1 and let's just say my teachers were not impressed with me knowing stuff all because i learned them from these games instead of their classes and the textbooks
If I found out my high school history teacher had a TH-cam channel where he uploaded videos like this, favorite INSANITY
You seem like a great teacher 👍
This is awesome the fact you're a teacher too
As a hardcore gamer n a massive affinity for history especially war and military tech this was the best treat in a while I can’t wait to watch Cold War n world a war, keep up the grind brother..
In the original Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 game, Vladimir Makarov’s inner circle used an unknown chemical weapon to attack cities throughout Europe. In the reboot version Modern Warfare III, there’s a multiplayer map set in Rebirth Island.
Please more! I enjoyed the historical thought added to the game and giving of what actually happens versus the fictional events.
History Teacher teaching history with games is easily your selling point. This is great!
played Black Ops one on the release and ngl missed a couple details that this video highlighted. Cool stuff man
GOD this was like the greatest video I’ve ever watched thank you so much for making this. You explained this so well and you are amazing
half the video = history
other half = just lore
... 100% = awesome
Love this! I'm glad to see all of the other positive responses.
Looking back on when I played this as an 11 year old, I didn't know an awful lot about what was really going on. It's only upon reflection after studying history and politics later in life that I can truly appreciate the alt-history storytelling Treyarch was going for!
Keep it up, I hope to see more!
Man I graduated 5 months ago, wish I had you as a HS history teacher. I actually learned/remembered a lot of history because of Bo1, played it A LOT when I was 6-13 years old.
Also anyone else notice the campaigns were the best when they are about actual history?
Great video! You earned a sub. Also, Yamantau is most likely a nuclear or electrical engineering research facility. My step-grandad was a Soviet electrical engineer from Czechoslovakia who worked on Russian radar technology. He used to talk about his colleagues from Yamantau, sharing personal stories about them drinking together and going skiing when they visited. Obviously, no one knows what went on there or what it's used for now, and neither did my grandpa, but considering that they were all electrical engineers, it's more than likely that it had to do with electrical engineering. Also I have heard ppl say it is maybe like the Cheyenne Mountain Complex in the US, where the US Air force command resides. Both coud be equally likely as grandpa worked with the Air force on radar. SO yea, no one knows.
The Baikonur Cosmodrome was also where Yuri Gagarin blasted off in 1961, & one German scientist who designed the V-2 rocket, Von Braun, went to the United States, became the head of NASA & designed the Saturn V rocket that took Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin to the moon. Also, my uncle John flew a helicopter in Vietnam in 1969.
you absolutely killed both videos man awesome job felt like I was watching a movie
Clicked on this video hoping for some background noise, and was not expecting it to be so in-depth and digestible. Great video and I can't wait to watch more!
This format of video is amazingly good, I seen a comment regarding you doing assassins creed and I totally agree. Personally you should do AC3 because I love American history so much lol but honestly all the assassins creed games deserve a video like this from you.
Forgot how great this campaign was. Great vid
Loving these videos, I think the earlier assassins creed games would lend themselves to this kind of video format too! Could be interesting to see the history behind those games explained if they were ever a series you played :P I love how the earlier assassins creed games followed real historical events (like the Pazzi conspiracy in 2 and some Third Crusade events in the 1st game)
My favourite interpretation of Black Ops is that done by Noah Caldwell-Gervais in his long video essay on the Call of Duty campaigns. He basically equates the bombastic, ridiculous plot of BO1 as essentially being a video game version of 80's Pulp Adventure novels, the kind of comparatively cheap over-the-top schlocky action stories with muscular men carrying damsels in their arms on the covers, who saved the world from impending destruction while looking good doing it. They were devoid of any real substance, but still an enticing read for the odd lonely housewife.
Great work putting gaming and our "history" together 👏... Great Video!
I can sense you blowing up in the future. History is intriguing and awesome to learn if presented and taught correctly. Splendid Video💯
The black ops sound track in the back 👌🏽
it just goes to show that teachers are under-paid and under-appreciated. i really enjoyed how you present things and keep it interesting at the same time.
Definitely not the quality I’d expect from 6k subs. Great vid, keep it up 👍🏻
Nice touch with the halo sound track! drum run I believe?
This is the kinda history lesson I'm actually interested in thanks for being a very interesting fellow explaining a game to true history
Damn, this channel is really underrated. I learn so much in both WAW and this video. Keep it up!
Just finished this campaign again myself. Fantastic video! MORE lol
Great video!! This game is incredibly special to me because it’s what made me a history buff. It will always hold a special place in my heart. Can’t wait to see your video on Cold War😁
Found your channel from the Cold War video and now going back to watch them all. Great videos man. Glad I found your channel
This is easily one of my favorite channels on here now
Your videos are super informative
WaW and BO are my 2 favorite CoD games
Thank you so much for the appreciation! Glad you got something out of it
Cold War era is underrated in gaming. Other game I can also think of is Mafia 3. I am a history fan and I love the game as it’s dark and gritty but it’s history.
Love your content man, We love our educators! Also, Black ops would be a really cool Cold War Psychological Thriller movie given the right director (Certainly not M.Night lol)
Hey! This is a great way to learn history in an entertaining and fun way. People thought I was crazy when I told them you can actually learn something from video games. Anyway, I am a huge history fan and I would have loved to have you as a teacher, you seem like a really cool dude. Looking forward to more videos!
Great video! It was put together very well, easy to follow, and has a ton of info!
This is pretty cool, you're a great teacher to use this as part of your teaching!
Excellent video, I didn't remember a lot of things and missions of this BO and watching this video refreshed my memory
Glad to help refresh your memory!
The WAW video was awesome, this one’s fantastic AND I GET ONE MORE AFTER??? Keep up these extremely interesting and entertaining videos. Very cool shit and very well made. Fantastic videos man!🔥
I salute you, as a fellow teacher (English department)
Have you ever played Call of Duty Black Ops 2? I would love you to do a video explaining the events of that game, including the civil war in Angola, the Soviet war in Afghanistan, the events in Nicaragua in the 80s, & the US invasion of Panama in 1989. In Black Ops Cold War, Raul Menendez had connections with Perseus.
Love this take on the call of duty campaigns! Great video!
Alucard hears the blackbird do you even read my Christmas list
Please do more of these, they are fascinating!
Shit man I came across a hidden gem of a channel. You’re gonna be big. You should do assassins creed videos like this! Idk if you have I’m gonna check haha
Would you believe that I've only ever played Black Flag? Haven't played the other games but maybe that would be fun! Thanks for the idea :)
@@hoodedbeasts I love this format of video either way! History was my favorite subject back in high school I’d love to see this series keep going!
If you do continue this kind of series I think it’d be cool to do the battlefield series
NOW THIS IS WHAT I"VE BEEN WAITING FOR (as a top student of an optional history class)
My great grandmother worked for the DOD during the starting in Ww2 and during the Cold War she was in charge of the paperwork for both atomic bombs but she never spoke anything about it and took alot of what she did to the grave
I like this video it gives us a deep dive into real life events while playing and acting those events as well hope you make one on BO6 since it has a lot of history going into it
super cool video! thanks for making this, i love history and campaigns in games so this was a great two for one watch.
I really want some “History Teacher Explains Assassins Creed” before they went off the deep end into the magical type shit
This was an engaging video and your students are lucky to have you, hope to see more videos like this
Please keep making content you will go far if you do so this is some of the best narrating I’ve heard in a while and I hope you continue to do youtube
Fun fact: the Castro scene at the docks has two diffrent German dub versions, the Uncut Austrian and the Cut German version, in the Austrian he says "that was a body double you killed" and the German one he says "do you americans think its this easy to kill me?", i'm not sure whats funnier, the fact he isn't wrong or the fact they want you to believe you didn't actually kill him 😂 the Austrian dub also has the "we have plenty of windows" line during the Clarke interrogation, while the German one removes the Glass in Mouth part and changes the line to "we have plenty of time"
Underrated channel, appreciate ur efforts man
Your channel is gonna be huge, I loved this. I never paid attention in school so I had no clue about any of this
I heard you include the music from Halo's Guilty Spark mission you sneaky devil you! ;)
This needs millions of views. Investing early. Great video
One of the first COD games I played and the first that made me want to know how close to irl it was. Great vid! looking forward to more
this channels gonna be big i can already tell
This music holy moly puts me back in my parents basement during middle school haha
If history class was taught using games like this and WaW, I wouldn't be so bored in them. I got my interest in mid-late 20th century history because of games like Black Ops and World at War. Kind of saddens I learned more about WWII from a video game than an actual history class.
New sub. Awesome idea you got exploring the real world lore behind the cods.
My only stipulation, make them longer and more in depth, you got skills, man.
very underrated channel
Jacob Geller has a video on the amount of war crimes in the COD universe. Might be interesting to watch that :)
hell yeah bro amazing video you should do cold war and explain the real history of the gulf war and we can see what bits of history they throw in the campaign. Or you could do it after you complete the bo6 campaign.
Thank you! I think I'll be saving the gulf war for the Black Ops 6 video so stay tuned! :)
As a history teacher, this is great
I love what you're doing with this channel. Do you mind covering the Bioshock series? I mean 1&2 are both all about that post war idealogy and stuff but Infinite is a whole different vibe
when i was in hs i used black ops 1 events for my world history cold war essays
Love the zombies Easter egg reference at 5:08.
Black ops 1 still has the best cod campaign to this day
6:13 WOW that’s an awesome detail
Phenomenal video. I’m definitely subscribing for a Cold War one
this attention to detail and history is why black ops 1 is the best call of duty campaign that will probably ever be released
And Black Ops 6 will continue this, I was actually born at the end of the Clinton era in January 2000 and that year George W Bush and Al Gore were running for office
Hope your students enjoyed this
Can’t wait for the next one. Great overview
