      He's one of my many huge influences as a filmmaker. I love his films so much. I went through a phase where I would leave the camera running for minutes just to be like Cuaron.

    I love that man so much. He guides the viewer around the scene and players, as if you are actually there. Master of handheld cameras and long takes, but also of inviting your heart and soul into the story. That's movie magic and Cuaròn's the best IMHO.

    Roma is a masterpiece. I went in with low expectations but was hooked by the end of the movie, and was with Cleo on every step of her journey. Also, the soundtrack in this film is a technical masterpiece that will unfortunately be overlooked by many (the beach sequence is intense!). If you're familiar with the Dolby Atmos soundtrack on Cuaron's Gravity, then prepare to be stunned by how he masterfully uses Atmos to convey life down here on Earth. Even the 5.1 soundtrack on Netflix upscales beautifully into Atmos (not many devices can play the Atmos soundtrack off of Netflix). If you can't watch this in surround sound, then find your nearest cinema (should you be lucky to have a theatrical release).

    This film was an overwhelming experience. Some people said they were aesthetically exhausted by the end. That didn't happen for me, but there is a lot to pay attention to. The restraint and patience he used for example to have a relatively tight shot at the hospital. All is going on in the room around Cleo and the camera doesn't follow the action. It stays on Cleo. You can't leave or help to pour in empathy for Cleo. Filmmakers in the US needed this film and others this year to bring us back to shooting art, writing, creating original work.

    I'm glad the ASC gave Cold War its top prize instead of Roma. Cuarón said he wanted a "digital" Black and White which sounds more like a cop out to not hire Lubezki and have him take the credit. Cuarón's Black and White has some terrible overexposed whites throughout the film and it looks just what it is: a movie set in the 70s but done in 2018 as opposed to Cold War's Black and White which really takes you back in time. Anyway, I'm glad the ASC went for true merit and not popularity.

    • @foglias
      @foglias 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      The film was produced by Esperanto Filmoj (Cuarón's film production company) and Netflix got involved when they were already in postproduction. Cuarón thought that it would be very unlikely that a major studio would acquire a Black & White, spanish language, art film so he said yes to Netflix. Netflix of course, want to go big on the award season (film industry) for the first time so they released the film in select theaters and as you see, they are doing an intensive campaign for getting nominations from Goyas to the Oscars.

    6.5K doth not mean a movie was shot on 65mm.

    • @tellemstevedave5559
      @tellemstevedave5559 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've been confused about that. Everyone is reporting that this was shot on 65mm but he just said digital. Do they mean they used a 65mm lens the entire movie? Imdb lists it as digital, but there are 70mm prints... So.... Yeah, something must have been lost in translation.

    • @tigqc
      @tigqc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tellemstevedave5559 the Alexa 65 has a sensor the same shape as a 65mm film frame (actually slightly bigger) that can record in 6.5K RAW. However in terms of resolution anamorphic 35mm is 6K and 65mm film has a resolution of around 11 to 12K. So while the Alexa 65 has a sensor the sameish size as 65mm film, the amount of information it can capture within that sensor space is only like half of what you can get with 65mm film, and like .5K higher than anamorphic 35mm. You can still shoot digitally and create film prints off of a digital negative to screen in a theater (kind of a cyborg marriage of sorts) and it will look better that way because it's projecting on film now. They just say it was shot on 65mm because it helps market and promote the film and because digital has overtaken film and has taken over that standard. The tagline for the Alexa 65 is 65mm reborn. I like the think of it more as 65mm dumbed down.

      @shubhampednekar4361 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tigqc there is some confusion here as Kodak claims that 35mm film equals 6K whereas ARRI and other tests and conventional scans show that 3.5K is more than enough for a 35mm film. That's why you get some horrible scans of super-16 at 4K, whereas scanning super-16 on less than 2K gives decent result. By that logic 6.5K sounds decent for a 70mm print.

      This was a good take. But I still feel that it is an objectively good film-personal taste or opinion asides. Obviously that goes for any movie so it sounds kind of dumb but your comment made me think of that Jorge Luis Borges quote that says “If you don’t feel poetry, if you [get] no sense of beauty, then the author has not written for you.” And I feel like that applies here but obviously instead of poetry/author I mean movie/director.(yes I’m aware quoting something about poetry is not gonna help it seem any less cinema-vanguard-hipsterish lmao) but yeah. I feel like there’s very much an intended audience here so of course it’d seem overrated to anyone outside of that. It makes sense though

    • @tonybp

      @@cleomondragon8971 I don't mind deep-feely-poet-artsy movies, but to me this movie is overrated, that simple. I even found the black and white cinematography too polished for the story. It felt like a preset from Premiere Pro. It seems to me all the acclaim and hype is just because of sentimentalism and the political times we're living. On the other hand, I find it annoying how many people are putting this movie on a pedestal when they haven't even seen it.
