Ariel Adams and Zach Pina of aBlogtoWatch discuss the new for 2019 Rolex Yacht-Master 42 reference 226659 watch. The Yacht-Master 42 is a prime example of a "discreet flex" watch give its sleek, under-stated military watch styling and $27,800 USD retail price on account of its 18k white gold case.

This is my favourite Rolex. It's so classy and incredibly understated. I like it's all white/grey gold and black. No other colour no diamonds it's simply stunning & I think it's the ultimate Rolex fu they have produced. It's full of class in such a subtle way it's the bext of their range imho... I want one and I'm aiming to get this...
My name for this is the "salt n pepper"

An FU watch is something like a rainbow Daytona...
(Emails complaining about language are pathetic; should ignore, not worth mention)

Again, I agree with what Ariel is saying. I think all luxury watches are "Flex" brands especially Rolex given its price and resale value. A true tool watch is a $80 Casio bought from Walmart: Accurate, reliable, rugged, and if you happen to trash it, throw it away and buy a new one.

Yeah, I mean you'd have to be a moron to call a Rolex a tool watch. They may have a tool watch heritage, but you'd have to be a seriously rich person to think of a $5-$15K watch as a throw away item, or one that you'd deliberately abuse. It would be like buying a Ferrari for off roading.
That being said, Rolex is a great everyday watch, just as long as you are not like a coal miner or something.

An F-You watch is aimed at totally dominating and even humiliating an interlocutor by a display of wealth so overpowerimg that it cannot be competed against. Like gunboat diplomacy. As in: “You see this watch? This watch is worth more than you car!”

Ariel trying to rationalize why someone can buy a watch that has no horological value. Hilarious 5:57

This is stealth wealth, the opposite of a FU watch. There's no subtelty in a FU watch. It's got to scream "I made it"and this YM42 certainly doesn't. No one is going to buy this (poor, middle class, rich, WIS, non WIS), except those who are frustrated of not being able to get their hands on hot sports steel Rolex and a prepared to fork out 30 grand, more than twice the money for two steel Daytonas,.for someting ultimately underwhelming. This is niche to another level.

BEAUTIFUL WATCH - LOVE IT AND WANT IT - BUT HARD TO JUSTIFY THAT PRICE W/ A RUBBER STRAP. I KNOW IT'S WHITE GOLD - BUT IT'S DEFINITELY OVER-PRICED,..AND EVEN HIGHER ON THE GRAY MARKET!

Wasn't the origin of an "F-U" watch the Alec Baldwin scene in Glengarry Glen Ross? "The Machine: What's your name?...Baldwin: F-U!, that's MY name!..." (proceeds to flex the Rolex)

'I'm feeling perplexed' - awesome. Believe it was your buddy Mr. Mosso who said that the Oysterflex is there to drop down the gold weight & price of a big bracelet like the Day Date has. Price tag of 27k instead of 41k. Solves a gold issue, not a steel issue. Make mine a 116655, please.

I don't think "stealth wealth" and "flex" go together. I always thought it was one or the other. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the average person doesn't know what you're wearing then that's a connoisseur's watch (regardless of price). But an expensive, outlandish, in-your-face wrist presence, that goes against current trends is an FU watch.

I just bought one… Just because it’s gorgeous interesting though because I have lots of stainless steel Rolex and Patek watches-which are even more low-key it’s just gorgeous so I bought it no flex kbo Fyou no stealth well just like it. I will admit though there are many of my friends that I am certainly comfortable that they have no idea what the watch is worth no reason to speak about it it’s just a watch not because I am trying to one up them without them knowing it they just truly could care less about watches

Why aren't you talking about a Grand Seiko as being an FU watch. Nobody knows what they are and how expensive they are, but people who know do. Its the ultimate stealth wealth watch. Its like a Toyota Land Cruiser. Nobody knows they cost 85,000 and are the best offroad cars there are

    Rolex is overrated

    • @ZCT808
      @ZCT808 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

No, it isn't. Take me, I'm a Rolex skeptic. But a few years ago, I thought I'd buy a preowned Explorer II Polar just to see what all the fuss was about. Thought it was a great watch, decided it wasn't really the right design for me long term. Sold it on a trade in for $500 profit. Bought the GMT Master II LN new from an AD in 2016. Fast forward to last week, just had to get it appraised because the replacement value now it has been discontinued has jumped $4,000 and I needed to get the insurance value updated.
If I had preferred the BLNR and bought that (I tried one on a week before I choose the LN), it would probably appraise for $1-$3K more than that.
Take a look around at the previous generation GMT watches, despite the inferior time keeping, hollow links, and comparatively cheap clasp, and they are changing hands for double the MSRP of the latest design.
That's a lot of people creating a crazy amount of demand for a brand. It is literally the most respected luxury brand in the world, and thus the market is surprisingly buoyant for this product. Personally, they won this skeptic over.
I enjoyed several Omega watches over the years, yet despite many good qualities, they all depreciated heavily. The market has decided the going rate for those watches, and it isn't good.
So sorry, but no Rolex is well respected for a reason, and long may it continue. How awesome to buy a watch and know that if it were stolen tomorrow, my insurance would give me more money than I bought it for. If I sold it, I could get back every penny of what I paid for it back, thus making it basically free for the time I owned it. And how amazing when you see 20, 30 or even 40 year old examples still working fine.
I'd say for such a versatile piece that you can wear for just about any occasion every day, AND holds or gains value as many of them do, it is an absolute steal if you can find the one you want at MSRP. Heck in 2016, I even got a slight discount!

@@ZCT808 so resale value makes it not overrated? Resale value going up illustrates that it IS overrated. Look at my avatar..I own a date just 41. It's a nice watch... However, in terms of quality and finishing, there is definitely better out there for similar money.
People should pay for quality, design, and value for money, not for brand name worship perpetuated from Instagram followers and blind fanboyism.
I don't hate the brand, I just hate the ignorant fanboyism and worship of the golden calf. People need a reality check and should see that there are often better options to be had for the same money....and to buy watches TO KEEP..NOT FLIP.
