    Rolex vs Patek Philippe is a battle of luxury watch royalty. No luxury watch brand carries the universal name recognition Rolex; among those who know, few watch brands can match cachet of Patek Philippe. Today, we compare the Rolex Yacht Master (116655) with Oysterflex strap/bracelet to a rare rose gold Patek Philippe Aquanaut in rose gold (5167R) to decide which watch should be the first resort. for luxury watch buyers and watch collectors!
    The Rolex Yacht-Master 116655 features a 40mm 18k Everose gold case surrounding a black dial on a black Oysterflex bracelet with an 18k Everose gold deployant buckle. Rolex includes a bi directional bezel with a Cerachrom ceramic insert in black. The watch is a posh cousin to the more common Submariner dive watch, an that extends to the lines of the case; the Yacht Master is less severe of line than its 116610 stablemate.
    Rolex's Oysterflex strap bowed with this Yacht Master model at Baselworld 2015, an it continues to be a marvel of mixed material design. The outer sheath is rubber; the inner band is an exotic alloy of nickel and titanium; the deployant clasp is crafted from 18 karat Rolex Everose, a rose gold alloy with a high proportion of copper for color and platinum for fade resistance.
    Inside the Rolex Oyster case, an in house automatic caliber 3135 keeps the time. This Rolex movement is both a COSC certified Swiss chronometer and a Rolex attested "Superlative Chronometer" (i.e., -2/+2 seconds per 24 hours) as a fully cased watch. The Yacht Master is water resistant to 100 meters.
    Functions include hours, minutes, seconds with hacking and date with quick set. The watch also measures 11.4mm in thickness and 48mm from lug-to-lug.
    The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R-001 is the richer cousin to the steel 5167A and the more casual brother of the Nautilus 5711. With a less elaborate case and a rubber strap ("composite strap" in Patek's lexicon), the Aquanaut "Jumbo" is a stripped down luxury sports watch by the patrician standards of Patek Philippe.
    Patek Philippe matches each rose gold Aquanaut's brown rubber strap with a corresponding rose gold deployant clasp.
    Each Aquanaut 5167R is water resistant to 120 meters an features a fully luminescent dial with a brown bronze or "black brown" base. The base of the dial features a "geosphere" pattern that emulates the overlapping rings of latitude and longitude that span the globe.
    Patek Philippe's Aquanaut is powered by caliber 324 SC. This automatic in house caliber is equipped with a unidirectional winding rotor on ceramic bearings, a Gyromax free sprung balance with silicon Spiromax hairspring, and a power reserve of 35-45 hours. The current versions of this caliber bear the Patek Philippe seal, an attestation of adjustments in six positions, and a factory rating of-3/+2 seconds per day or better. The Aquanaut 5167R includes a sapphire display caseback.
    The Patek Philippe Aquanaut Jumbo features a 40mm 18k rose gold case surrounding a brown embossed dial on a brown Tropical rubber strap with an 18k rose gold deployant buckle. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds and date. The watch also measures 8.3mm in thickness and 47mm from lug-to-lug.

    Everyone goes for the Rolex. I had to steel, blue dial YM, traded that and an Omega Sea-Master for a Daytona last year. The Yacht-Master was fine, but I never could figure if it wanted to be a dress watch or a sport. I just called it a casual watch. It was nice, not as nice as the Daytona. I would go for the Aquanaut, steel, on the bracelet. It's Patek. It will hold value as well as any Rolex sport.

    Yachtmaster hands down. Also I was very surprised to hear that PP doesn't have instant date jump. My Stowa Marine chronometer (COSC ETA 2824-2) has that, not to mention hacking and matching accuracy when properly adjusted. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying my Stowa is a better watch, it isn't, but I believe PP should up their game in this department given the respect they have and the money they are charging. Just my 2 cents.

    • @rdesigninc5756
      @rdesigninc5756 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For the instant date jump, it may depend on exactly when the watch Tim is showcasing was manufactured as my December 2018 Aquanaut definitely has the instant date jump. For the non-hacking seconds, if I unscrew the crown and don't let go, the second hand does actually stop so I guess it can be considered "twin release" hacking. Also, non-hacking seconds is one way to tell if the watch is a fake or not as most counterfeits, even with display casebacks, will have a second hand that hacks - so right away you'll know something is wrong.

    • @jannovotny9630
      @jannovotny9630 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rdesigninc5756 Thank you for the input, I didn't know about date and the 'hacking' I thought was possible only on a few watches but good to know aqaunaut is one of those. Good point about the counterfeits as well. Cheers

    A lot of comments to the effect of "For the money", or "bang for the buck". Lets be honest people, none of these watches would make it onto your wrist if price was the main consideration or fiscal prudence was your primary concern. In fact, who cares about power reserve or seconds hacking, etc. The reality is, you are buying a gold piece of art that happens to tell you the time and what the date is, which one would you like on your wrist? That display case back on the PP does it for me.

    I’d go with the Rolex. I know the PP is prob the “correct” answer, but I’m honestly not a big PP fan. One of the reasons for this is a bit superficial, but a factor nonetheless...I dont identify with any PP owners I’ve ever met.
    I’ve never met a PP owner with whom I’d want to grab a beer. Granted, I know only about 3-4 PP owners, but they are all socially awkward elitists.

      Easy to wear? The strap has no adjustment system if your wrist swells? And have you ever worn a watch with a display back? It's like having a piece of glass pushed into your skin.
      As for exclusive, despite spending much time on airplanes in first class, club lounges, luxury hotels, I have literally never seen this Rolex Yachtmaster in the wild. It's absurd to argue that there is a need to spend ten grand finding a rarer piece, like you are constantly running into people wearing a Yachtmaster!

    If you’re counting pennies....Rolex I guess. If you strip everything out except ‘which do I want on my wrist right now’ - you’re lying if you don’t say the PP.

    • @ZCT808
      @ZCT808 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      First off, what an idiotic thing to say. A person 'counting pennies' is not buying a solid gold $26,000 watch! At least 98% of the population of the planet would never even dream of such a purchase.
      Secondly, I think the Patek is ugly. I don't like those numbers. My father in law has a Timex with a strap that looks like that. I'm not mad keen on the face. I think that flat non-bezel made of gold will scratch up like a bitch. And the only purpose of a rubber strap is for a nice comfy easy going watch, and this one doesn't have any micro adjustments. How fucking stupid. The current version of the Rolex has a glidelock now, so like 20mm of adjustability no tools. Amazing. Plus you have two size options in rose gold and a new 42mm in white gold.
      Finally, no bezel, no hacking, a slow roll date, and have you ever worn a watch with a display back? Not that comfortable. Oh and less accurate than the Rolex, with a warranty less than half of that of a Rolex? All for TEN GRAND MORE! You could literally buy that Rolex, another Rolex for your wife, and take a luxury vacation for less than the Patek.
      I can't think of any scenario where I'd want that watch. If both pieces were offered to me for free (and I can't sell), I'd pick the Rolex every time, although ideally the new white gold version. No lying whatsoever.

    Rolex

  • @ZCT808
    @ZCT808 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I prefer the Rolex, and of course if you buy the newly updated version of this watch you now have a choice of a 42mm white gold version, 37 or 40mm rose gold version. And on top of that, the clasp now has the universally loved glidelock clasp giving considerable adjustment completely lacking on the Patek.
    The display back is all well and good, but in reality it is less comfortable against the skin than metal, as metal (being a better conductor) matches your body temperature better.
    I also believe that the Patek will very easily pick up scratches on the non-bezel, which will be very upsetting, whereas that ceramic bezel will stand up much better on the Rolex.
    And with the difference in price you could buy your wife a Rolex, and take her on a luxury vacation with the money you saved.
    Finally, no hacking or instant date change on the Patek? WTF? Patek may impress the watch snobs and keyboard jockeys who will probably never own either a Patek or Rolex, but honestly, it's the clear loser in the versus.

    I like the Rolex Yacht Master better then the Patek Philippe Aquanaut. I like the Rolex big gold case and gold clasp, the Rolex dial is more legible then the Patek Philippe dial and the Rolex movable bezel makes it a true diving watch.

    Unfair comparison .. is like a Ferrari compared to a Corvette. A steak compared to a burger .. Patek is pure class

    I'd actually rather have the SS Aquanaut over both. Of these 2, I'd take the Rolex.
