The year, 1981. I remember hearing it for the first time on the John Peel show. He didn't talk over it, and at the end said the name of the band, the song title, the record label(Factory) and the code number. I promptly ordered it from Andys Records the next day! Now that's what I call a DJ........
Equivalent reverence given to this recording by (respect to you, BJ) NZ’s answer to John Peel, Barry Jenkin who, truly speaking and similarly, was and always will be peerless!
Who actually cares about P💩💩l anymore? dirty nonce and they dropped his name from the Glastonbury stage 🤣🤢🤮. Should have thrown him in jail. As bad as Rolf Harris and Jimmy Savile! But he discovered all these bands and is a hero!? 🤣😒🙄
WOOOOOOW........FANTASTIC.....AWESOME!!!! WHAT A FANTASTIC DARK SOUND!!! THIS IS PURE POST-PUNK. THey were a lost post punk bands, alongside the crispy ambulance, and what about other bands like "the opposition" and the excelent "Sad Lovers and Giants"....great,great.....POST PUK RULES 4EVER!!!
This makes me so melancholy in a way that I can't explain. I feel this sadness for the singer, because his voice is so haunting and he appears so withdrawn in the video. I really like it, but it has a habit of gripping my emotions.
That's because of this look 😮😵 how could you feel good after crossing those eyes and the same feeling poors all over his voice... Wonderfull song nevertheless
Great example of that tense, nervous Benelux sound. Love Michel's expressions - although he does get a bit carried away :-) IMO this is streets ahead of the recent live version also available on this site.
This is probably the best production Hannett did. Sometimes his work with some Joy Division made tracks like Colony seemed toned down a bit but here it's just right, it's absolutely perfect. The most beautiful song I've ever heard
it's so hard to find this on you tube search because of "the name(s)" but yes!!! some of my old favorites, thanks so much for your contribution to this wonderful library of youtube.
One of my fave bands of all time, got their albums on the playlist at the Farmers Arms in Penzance, I think we're probably the only pub in Britain that has :-)
reminds of a pub in colchester i went in which had joy division's substance on the jukebox just after its release. i played the whole thing, cost a fortune. I don't think it was super popular but i had a good time :)
Swimming and the songs from the singles like Calcutta were so major for the time, precursors of cold wave and dream pop at the same time.. Later bands like The Essence or the early period of their compatriot Sigloxx for the coldwave aspect (they started barely a year later?), or later Pale Saints for the dreampop aspect would have dreamed to be able to achieve such quality.. Incredible that The Names didn't get more recognition as one of the major bands of the early post punk scene.
Brian Guthrie (Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins) brother started Nightshift records. He was a fan of The Names and use it for his label. Lowlife is a another great band that should of been huge....
This is great video, very strange. At this time band were signed to Factory (Manchester UK) and this track was produced by the legendary Martin Hannett at Strawberry Studios in Stockpot Manchester.
Hannett, refers to Martin Hannett, who was the engineer/producer on this track. He gained most fame for producing Joy Division's 'Unknown Pleasures' and 'Closer', as well as a bunch of other post punk bands from that era. He used a lots of synths in his production, including mixing them with drum sounds.
@bluevidcam maybe... alot of the euro bands were unknown then as it was still the cold war and east /west germany. i was lucky in 82 to be in west germany from australia. i was amazed at the bands i heard in the night clubs there Spliff and Falco for example bought both ther albums and was really impressed, i worry about how many i NEVER heard m49 ps the cure were kicking around in the late 70s(first album79) so only a shakey maybe.
I can't agree more. I'm 21 but I've always hated modern music because I grow up listening to my dad's Joy Division and New Order stuff, and all new records sound too close to your ears. The spacey echoey sound Hannett created in more or less every song he produced is fantastic to the point I just listen to stuff to hear his snare sound at work. I have watched the video of him on here at Strawberry Studios mixing Pauline Murray umpteen times! RIP I wish I could have met him.
@amamuffin I get what you mean, but I'm 19 (going on 20 this year) and I love music like this. While it's true most of today's music is garbage, you have to make an effort to find gold like this. A lot of underground artists today are offering the same creativity and amazingness as bands like this. It's great.
the description under the title needs to be changed as The Names reformed back in 2007 releasing new material in first 2009 and are still active as of 2021.
@lifepod2036 yes, this music is not for today's kids...i am raising my 3 year old listening to all this wonderful stuff. I wonder how he'll turn out :P
You should check for Pauline Murray and the Invisible Girls album, John Cooper Clarke's early albums, and OMD's Electricity single B-side 'Almost'. In my opinion, those songs-albums are among the best works of Martin Hannett.
The synth sound Hannett gets is something else. If only more people had had his ears!
I'm so in love with his gaze ♥

Gotta love the creepy/post punk side of the 80's
The song was produced by Joy Division's producer, Martin Hannnett, and imho is one of his finest moments as a producer.
How have I missed this masterpiece all of my life? Such a beautiful eerie post-punk sound! So happy to have stumbled upon it!
love The Names, and now that I'm actually working the night shift, I listen to this before heading in to work haha
Randomly finding this and instantly reminded of how exciting and creative post-punk was. Unique.
Criminally underrated!!!!
Great band, Great sound, Great Michel Sordinia.
Love this 1980s era somber post punk music

WOOOOOOW........FANTASTIC.....AWESOME!!!!

THIS IS PURE POST-PUNK.

If it didn’t grip your emotions like it has mine and other fans, it wouldn’t have left the impression that it did. Embrace it!
I love his creepy stare so much
Same
Psycho calm , this is as cool as it gets. The creative and intellectual Vampire norm , bord with it all and immortal feeling stuck here in this hell.
Brilliant.. bought this when first out along with Minnypops - Goddess. Someone borrowed never returned 🤔😉
This has been one of my favorite songs of all time for 25+ years. thanks for posting.
Great example of that tense, nervous Benelux sound.
Love Michel's expressions - although he does get a bit carried away :-)

Extraordinaire chanson..rien à redire , un chef d'oeuvre de simplicité et de profondeur..
This is probably the best production Hannett did. Sometimes his work with some Joy Division made tracks like Colony seemed toned down a bit but here it's just right, it's absolutely perfect. The most beautiful song I've ever heard
This is excellent - never heard them before

googoomuc LOWLIFE was amazing
The video fits the song.
Post Punk madness with a dreamy-nightmarish feel.

IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG!
This is great video, very strange. At this time band were signed to Factory (Manchester UK) and this track was produced by the legendary Martin Hannett at Strawberry Studios in Stockpot Manchester.

Very talentuous band!!

Wow - Sarah Nixey (Black Box Recorder) covers this on her solo album. I had no idea that it was a cover. Great song!
Dope!!
This is very interesting.

the description under the title needs to be changed as The Names reformed back in 2007 releasing new material in first 2009 and are still active as of 2021.

@lifepod2036 yes, this music is not for today's kids...i am raising my 3 year old listening to all this wonderful stuff. I wonder how he'll turn out :P

This is the only video The Names did . It comes from a Factory VHS ;)
Shagaliscious !!!

Vampire-esque New Wave of the 80s
I love this song... But I didn't get the whole album to download...
How many groups have John Peel put on? I remember in the 80s here in the USA wanting to be as brilliant as Peel and all of the groups he played.
I don't know why but I thing this song would word hand in hand with an opening scene in a zombie movie
