  • Agate is probably the hardest thing you will ever have to drill a hole in.
    I show how to drill agate pebbles using both a solid diamond drill and a diamond core drill, using a Dremel type Parkside rotary tool. Which one is better? Which one is quicker? You will have to watch the video to see!
    The drills were bought from Eternaltools.com. I have no affiliation to the company!
    I fitted a silver eye pin into the hole using two part epoxy adhesive.

    Thanks that's truly brilliant! You could remove the core that has been left inside with the solid ended diamond drill bit. It would be really interesting to see the comparison of the different drill bits on the same stone.

      Thank you, I am pretty sure the stones were of the same or very similar hardness. I think they are both Chalcedoney off the same beach, the same class of stone as Agate. However point taken, I will run the same test on a single stone. Thank you for watching

    Nice video! What if you have a smaller fire agate. Can an eye pin be added to it?

    Will the core bit leave a middle piece? If it does, did you break it off?

      In this case the middle bit is so small that it breaks apart naturally. With larger size core drills you will need to break out the centre pillar, I would just use a small lever. For small, 1-2 mm I would always use a solid drill bit.

    I will say this for you Steve, you keep no secrets. I realise that is your point. You are honest in everything. Well maybe not about being a "poor Stone Mason" ;) Like Farmers, no such thing.. Thank you very much for sharing.

    I am worried there will be stone material left in the hole when using the core drill the way you did it, how are you supposed to get it all out?

      I wash mine under a small stream of water at the same time twiddling a small drill in the hole by hand. Hope this helps

    What sort of epoxy is best? I feel like it might be difficult since the epoxy might be too thick/viscous to work into the hole and the eye hoop peg. Thanks 🙏🏼

      Hi, I use the cheapest epoxy I can find, generally from pound type shops. It is quite fluid. I do not have a problem dribbling into the hole. Also I use wooden cocktail sticks to feed the glue into the hole. Good luck!

    What size eye pins do you use?

    • @thestonecraftingworkshop7490
      @thestonecraftingworkshop7490  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are about 10mm long in total including the ring. I did not have much choice of sizes. Good luck.

    Where do you get your eye pins?

      Hi jill, I cannot remember where I got them, I just did a google search for Jewellery findings and used a website that came up. If you are in the UK you could try Cookson gold, they have a good selection under pendant fittings ( they call them Bail with pin) Good luck with your search!
