I doubt there's an insurance policy in existence that would come anywhere near covering the cost of the medical bills alone let alone the surgeries and medical appointments that will go on for years for some of the victims or to compensate for the loss of life.10-1 criminal charges are coming soon.

Someone needs to be charged for having the illegal fireworks. Where is the accountability of who did this? Who purchased them and from where? Who did all the boxes of fireworks belong to? Its illegal wheres the home owner or renters who lived there?

There are many neighbors who suffer from PTSD who live with explosions randomly going off throughout the year much less on New Year’s eve or the 4th of July. A tradition my entire life that included aerial fireworks. NOTHING CLOSE to the amount we see today. It blows my mind. I noticed aerial fireworks grew expediently after novelty ground fireworks were banned. Causation? Maybe. I am older than you and the amount of illegal aerial fireworks exponentially increased after the extensive fireworks ban which included sparklers for kids and the tame on the ground fountains that mostly don’t make noise or pop, only emit smoke. Bc people trying to get ground fireworks illegally were then introduced to the aerial fireworks. It's not rocket science to solve this problem - but the police and prosecutors ignore it and the leg is worthless. All of these things are already banned. Instead of making it a felony, reduce it to a misdemeanor offense with a $2,000 fine and give a citation to everyone lighting these off and give a citation for every single projectile, or device capable of launching a projectile, found - if you have a cake with 50 rockets, you get 50 citations and $100,000 in fines, if you have three empty mortar tubes that launched, or could have been used to launch something, in your trash can or pickup truck, you get 3 citations and $6,000 in fines; 1/2 the fine if you give up your supplier and they are prosecuted - 1/4 the fine if the suppliers are cops or firemen and they lose their jobs.
Not rocket science but explain how it works in practice please. Should police send out 20k officers to sit on every street and investigate every instance of potential violations? Then imagine the court system that will handle all the challenges to citations. Will the cops show up to court and testify and prosecuters present actual evidence?

A few yrs ago, there was a petition started to stop fireworks for various reasons including environmental toxins (air, water, ground), noise pollution, emotional triggers for veterans, victims of ptsd, autistic/epiletic & sensory issues, animal stress (pet & wildlife), after affects on weather (usu heat & gases up- humidity, rain & toxins down..), dangers of misuse such as fires, loss if life & 1st, 2nd & 3rd degree burns- requiring specific care, skin grafts, surgeries, anti-rejection meds, anti-biotics, anti-inflammatories & whatever else may be needed to heal, & reconstruct physical damages if possible. Smh. Preventable, & horrible- the fleeting moments of awe are not worth all this damage!!! Ban All fireworks! Ppl can find other ways to celebrate.
This tragic and completely preventable event will change nothing in Hawaii. Given that friends and neighbors knew of these fireworks and the intent to light them but did not call authorities speaks volumes. Now, three people are dead and many severely burned. This will take many years to sort out in the courts and in the end, all of the victims will be greatly disappointed because there are no "deep pockets" ultimately liable. In the meantime there is a horrendously burned 3-year-old on the verge of death who needs to be flown to the mainland in order to get the advanced medical help they need.
And the parents are to blame for participating in this illegal activity and exposing their poor child to the inherent dangers. All I see are ignorance, selfishness, stupidity.

Last 20 years? In the 70s we would go up to Tantalus Park to watch the fireworks. From 11pm it would really start and you could see the smoke rising from Waikiki...and this was only red firecrackers, no aerials at that time. By 12 it was a warzone!

Regardless of the illegal fireworks being just that, Illegal in our state, the person whose genius put a fireworks cake on a table to launch them, is total idiot! The ground doesn't tip over or melt from the heat of igniting fireworks, tables can, and in this instance did. That's a bare minimum safety precaution that was obviously overlooked. It's usually even written on the boxes of these cake boxes of fireworks where there sales are legal. Place on flat ground before lighting. I've seen it on TH-cam fireworks channels.

A tradition my entire life that included aerial fireworks. NOTHING CLOSE to the amount we see today. It blows my mind. I noticed aerial fireworks grew expediently after novelty ground fireworks were banned. Causation? Maybe.

I am older than you and the amount of illegal aerial fireworks exponentially increased after the extensive fireworks ban which included sparklers for kids and the tame on the ground fountains that mostly don’t make noise or pop, only emit smoke. That didn’t even make sense to me. I do believe that when the ban took effect that’s when the illegal aerial fireworks exploded no pun intended. Bc people trying to get ground fireworks illegally were then introduced to the aerial fireworks. I don’t believe a total ban would eliminate the problem as it is so difficult to enforce since neighbor islands aerials are legal making it accessible to our island. What is the solution? I’m sorry I don’t know, but I don’t think a total ban is the solution.

It's not rocket science to solve this problem - but the police and prosecutors ignore it and the leg is worthless. All of these things are already banned. Instead of making it a felony, reduce it to a misdemeanor offense with a $2,000 fine and give a citation to everyone lighting these off and give a citation for every single projectile, or device capable of launching a projectile, found - if you have a cake with 50 rockets, you get 50 citations and $100,000 in fines, if you have three empty mortar tubes that launched, or could have been used to launch something, in your trash can or pickup truck, you get 3 citations and $6,000 in fines; 1/2 the fine if you give up your supplier and they are prosecuted - 1/4 the fine if the suppliers are cops or firemen and they lose their jobs.

Why? Did he purchase and light the bombs? There’s only one place of blame it’s the people who sell it, purchase it and use it.
This tragic and completely preventable event will change nothing in Hawaii. Given that friends and neighbors knew of these fireworks and the intent to light them but did not call authorities speaks volumes. Now, three people are dead and many severely burned. This will take many years to sort out in the courts and in the end, all of the victims will be greatly disappointed because there are no "deep pockets" ultimately liable. In the meantime there is a horrendously burned 3-year-old on the verge of death who needs to be flown to the mainland in order to get the advanced medical help they need.
And the parents are to blame for participating in this illegal activity and exposing their poor child to the inherent dangers. All I see are ignorance, selfishness, stupidity.

Last 20 years? In the 70s we would go up to Tantalus Park to watch the fireworks. From 11pm it would really start and you could see the smoke rising from Waikiki...and this was only red firecrackers, no aerials at that time. By 12 it was a warzone!

Regardless of the illegal fireworks being just that, Illegal in our state, the person whose genius put a fireworks cake on a table to launch them, is total idiot! The ground doesn't tip over or melt from the heat of igniting fireworks, tables can, and in this instance did. That's a bare minimum safety precaution that was obviously overlooked. It's usually even written on the boxes of these cake boxes of fireworks where there sales are legal. Place on flat ground before lighting. I've seen it on TH-cam fireworks channels.
