  • McGilvray was the voice of Australian cricket on ABC radio for decades, mostly on the ABC, establishing a style and credibility that influenced two generations. He began his radio career in 1934, when the only communications between Australia and England was telegraph cables. The ball-by-ball cabled information was embellished with sound effects in the Sydney studio to give the impression of being at the ground. McGilvray called every Test match in Australia between World War Two and his retirement in 1985, when the crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground gave him a standing ovation.

I'm now 68, since 1964 Ashes series in England I became Alan McGilvray's admirer. I used to see the match through his commentry. Radio Australia, BBC Test Match Special were lucky & honoured to have Alan McGilvray as their commentator. During Radio Australia's Cricket Broadcast....the most cherished moment for me was when one of the commentators said.."comments from you Lindsey & your next commentator will be Alan McGilvray". Yes those were the DAYS.
