    Lyrics:
    Jesus, don't cry
You can rely on me honey
You can combine anything You want
    I'll be around
You were right about the stars
Each one is a setting sun
    Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
Tuned to chords strung down Your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning Your orbit around
    Don't cry
You can rely on me honey
You can come by any time You want
    I'll be around
You were right about the stars
Each one is a setting sun
    Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
Tuned to chords strung down Your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning Your orbit around
    Voices whine, skyscrapers are scraping
Your gravelly voice is smoking last cigarettes
Are all You can get, turning Your orbit around
    Our love, our love
Our love is all we have
    Our love
Our love is all of God's money
    Everyone is a burning sun
    Tall buildings shake
Voices escape singing sad sad songs
Tuned to chords strung down Your cheeks
Bitter melodies turning Your orbit around
    Voices whine, skyscrapers are scraping
    Your gravelly voice is smoking
Last cigarettes are all You can get
    Turning Your orbit around
Last cigarettes are all You can get
    Turning Your orbit around
Last cigarettes are all You can get
    Turning Your orbit around

I introduced this song to my mother when I was a teenager. It became her favorite song ever and ultimately our song. She passed away a few days ago. It's touching and meaningful to me that such a beautiful piece of music can exist and my mother in some way can live through it. I miss you mom.

Every once in a while, somebody somewhere makes a sweet pretty song that immediately transports you back to a bittersweet time when you were young, and reminds you of memories you can never relive, but you're better for having. This is one of them. Thanks, Wilco.

"You were right about the stars, each one is the setting sun". It always struck me that it was about perspective ...there was someplace in the universe where each of these dimly blinking lights was just a sun.

I think it's less of "just a sun" and more of this belief that there's so much more than us. That little spec in the sky is someone somewhere's whole existence. Here we are on top of each other, building upwards in these giant buildings (skyscrapers scraping together). And there is so much out there. Each star is a finite opportunity like we have here. There's more than ourselves I guess. How I see it at least. I love how vague the lyrics are. I have no idea what it's about, but it's amazing.

You wanna marry the Spirit of Jesus Christ. Jesus literally will DRAPE your entire flesh like clothing and you will feel a door open in your heart and you will feel Jesus literally physically pour out into your entire body then up into your mind to share that brain and body with you... literally. Why? So that you will never ever be alone again and so you can feel heaven always... now.. not later. This is the gift of God called the Living Water bursting forth from the belly into the entire body. Ask Jesus for it with persistence and trust me even though I am a stranger. Ask Jesus for the Living Water to be poured out and for Him to come share that brain and body with you making 2 into 1.

@@LCAC75 Why does it sound creepy as hell. You Already have the Holy Spirit in you... why/how do you think your lungs pump air when you go to sleep? When you die you will go to a place -- in that place there will be a VERY special place... all spirits want to go there.... that place in the temple of Christ... and you will be the creepy one not allowed into it because you closed your mind off to the knowledge of God and that the human body, your temple is Gods temple -- created for Jesus to manifest as Spirit into... if this creeps you out then let me tell you another fact, the antichrist is a spirit who lives in your flesh and mind already. THAT ought to creep you out -- but he is slick... and you cant feel him in you... all i said was ask Jesus for a divine visions to confirm all this to you.... you dont wanna die and figure out it was all real and you missed the chance to enter the temple in the midst of heaven. Inquire on Jesus while he can be found while he will answer you. I aint asking you to believe anything. Im asking you to ask Jesus to show you if all this is real or not in a divine vision... and if you ask and nothing happens, so be it. At least you proved yourself to be open minded.

The first night I jump the gate they were the final Act on one of the main stages I was in awe
And of course being Lollapalooza the crowd was plenty hip
And I was jamming like crazy out on the grass finally I asked someone next to me who was this band and they gave me a from under what rock on what planet did you just come from LOL

Ive never found a work that conveys sadness in the same way that this track does.. it is such a weird song. There were so many extraordinary factors that went into how it gained the emotional weight that it did. The biggest is of course 9/11 - which was miraculously unintentional in the conceptualization process. Tweedy also had a lot of creative strife with Bennett in the early writing, and ended up being the last major piece they contributed together on. Bennett's tinge on violin might have been born from this, and I think it is probably what is most effective in delivering that bizarre sadness.
Couple that with how beautiful and profound the lyrics are in relation with one of the most powerful moments in modern human history, and you get what seems to be an accidental masterpiece. I'm really happy that this song was made.

From the very first time I listened to this song when I bought this album the day it was released in 2002, I truly believed it was about September 11th. When Wilco was asked, “Is this album about September 11th?” they always replied, “Most of this album was recorded before September 11.” The key word in that sentence is “most.” I believe Jesus Etc was written and recorded in the days or months after September 11. I think that “tall buildings shake, voices escape singing sad sad songs” is an obvious reference to the World Trade Center. I think that when he sings, “Last cigarettes, is all you can get” describes someone climbing to the top of one of the buildings and realizing that he was going to die very soon, and so he has a cigarette. Furthermore, I believe he’s using the imagery of the two burning buildings, which looked like two burning cigarettes. Also, in some parts of the song, he’s speaking from heaven to his surviving wife, after the towers have collapsed, and he’s telling her that she was right about something she had said to him. She was right about the stars, each one is a burning sun. He knows because he’s seen them now that he’s dead. And he’s also met Jesus. Yes, much of the album was recorded before September 11th, but I’m sure the artwork wasn’t completed. For instance, the two towers on the cover of the album probably wasn’t decided on before September 11th, nor were the shots of a city looking up between buildings, as if looking to the sky for planes. Also, “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot,” is British military code for an emergency transmission coming from the United States. This is the kind of emergency message that would have been transmitted to the British Military on September 11th. That’s why, on the second to last song, that woman with a British accent keeps repeating, “Yankee-Hotel-Foxtrot.” In other words, “There is a message of emergency coming from the U.S.”

    • @Darticus42
      @Darticus42 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

According to Wikipedia at least, they planned to release it on 9/11, but due to issues with their record label and the album getting leaked while the they switched to a new label they just decided to stream the entire album on their website on 9/18 2001, only officially releasing the physical album in 2002 like you mentioned. And even then, they'd probably only have weeks to send in the final version before preparing to master, produce the vinyl (can take months at scale unlike CDs), develop marketing, etc.. So in reality they didn't have long at all to modify the album to reference the World Trade Center falling if that occurred.
Could they have re-recorded some songs, created the album cover, etc. in only a week given they didn't have to get physical copies made? Maybe. But couldn't it also be a huge coincidence? I'm not sure which I believe. Amazing analysis of the song though, it's uncanny how poignant this song is regardless if it was intentional

@@Darticus42 They didn’t do what you’re describing: This final album art was not included in that September 18th “release.” I have seen that album art. You can find it. It’s of a city street, and it’s labeled “Alternate Album Cover” at this time. It shows lots of beautiful old buildings, but no twin modern towers. Also: There is no “official” track listing for that September 18th “release.” I have looked. In reality, there is no record anywhere of that September 18th release, except written on Wikipedia and in interviews of Wilco. If you can find an actual “release” with the track listing on September 18th, let me know. I’d love to see it. It’s my theory that Jesus, Etc was not on that release because it hadn’t been written yet. The physical album wasn’t released till 2002. The final artwork wasn’t released till 2002. That September 18th release is a FICTION (in my opinion) because Wilco didn’t want their music limited to a September 11th influence. (By FICTION, I don’t mean that nothing was released on September 18th, I just don’t believe that Jesus, etc was part of that release, and I think a lot of other elements surrounding Ashes of American Flags were created or changed after 9/11.) They had written a TIMELESS album that was partly inspired by September 11th (most of the songs were written and recorded before 9/11), but they didn’t want to appear to be capitalizing on it. Jesus Etc was DEFINITELY written in the weeks and months AFTER 9/11. The final album art was DEFINITELY created AFTER 9/11. Again: There was no PHYSICAL ALBUM till 7 months AFTER 9/11. That September 18th “release” is a Red Herring. There is no Physical Copy of a Track Listing of that album till April, 2002. I personally am a fan of Jeff Tweedy, but Wilco is simply an average band without Jay Bennett. Jeff Tweedy is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT to work with, and he forced Jay Bennett out. Listen to the songs on Being There and Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (the 3 albums where Bennett co-wrote the music), and compare those songs to ANYTHING Wilco made AFTER Tweedy forced Bennett out. There’s no comparison. Bennett was THE MAGIC INGREDIENT that made Wilco GREAT. Without him, they’re average. My point is: I don’t necessarily trust what Tweedy says. In “I’m Trying To Break Your Heart,” Tweedy came off as a Prima Donna who couldn’t share CREDIT with Jay Bennett. I personally think Tweedy is not being truthful about this. He’s basically telling a harmless lie. I think Jesus Etc was written and recorded AFTER 9/11. That said: Jeff Tweedy is INCREDIBLY TALENTED, he’s an EXCELLENT lyricist, and has a BEAUTIFUL VOICE. And I love all the wonderful songs he wrote with Jay Bennett. By the way: Jay Farrar also couldn’t get along with Tweedy.

The original name for this song was (Jesus don’t cry) This song was wrote right before 9/11 happened. If you listen to the lyrics it’s very eerie the feeling it gives you knowing that this song was our reality’s foreshadowing. It was later released in 2002 and the writers of the song would later relate their words in the song to that tragic day, even though the 2 happenings were unrelated.
