      Lol exactly, been having the same thoughts. Macbook air was not even initially the "budget" laptop within macbook lineups. It was the Macbook (the white glossy one). Although the current lineup of mac products do not make sense now tbh - I get each products and their uses, but its too much overlapping with price and usp.

    • @projiuk
      @projiuk 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yoni Caragay there’s always been a weird overlap. You’re right that the air was once a lot of money. But roll back to 2015 and there was almost no difference in price between the 13inch air and the 13inch retina MacBook Pro - yet the pro had more grunt and a much higher res screen.
      It’d make more sense if the old air was taken away, the current MacBook was put for 999. That way you have a real differentiation between the MacBook (1 port, 5W cpu maybe the m3 once) and the air (2 ports w/ thunderbolt, 7W cpu)

    Can someone actually talk about how it performs in real life functions and not just benchscores? How does it handle multiple apps, many word docs, internet and Bluetooth while having 12 google chrome tabs and switching between apps, and syncing calendar, iPhone, etc? How does it handle the REAL world application??

      I've only had the Air for a few days now. But It performs well. I don't notice any difference or slow down in performance from my old Dell XPS 13 with a i7-7560U it performs just as fast as that. But again I don't really do any taxing stuff and mostly use my computer for school and videos.

      I use the Air 2018 for programming. Programming itself isn't necessarily that needy, but the programs you use (IDE) to code in can be more processes to run. And the Air does well with that. I have like, at least, one IDE, like 20 Chrome tabs (no joke) up and running at some points plus multiple Terminal windows, and it does well with that. To me, the only 'truly' noticeable performance difference that I've seen between the Air and Pro has only been when rendering videos.

    1. Totally, Agree with you about thunderbolt ports on either side, that would've made more sense.
    2. Macbook has 1st gen butterfly, Macbook Pro had the 2nd gen Butterfly, and New Macbook Pro + Air now have the 3rd gen.
    3. Macbook pro non-touch bar seems to be a better value in terms of performance, for 100 dollars more you get a display that is brighter and more accurate with faster processor, while everything else remains the same. You do miss out on touch ID but priorities.

    • @coytus94
      @coytus94 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can’t just fire someone because they are making expensive products. It aint easy to give a CEO of a major company the boot. It really depends whether or not the Board of Directors feel that the company is starting to lose profit at a significant level under his leadership. They would be threatened because they are some of the largest shareholders of the company, and if they feel their shares are dropping to an incredible low and notice that it is going to be effective for the long run to where they start to lose money, they can all unanimously vote to fire the CEO of the company (in this case it’s Cook) or make him step down to a lower position within the company in favor of someone more qualified. Obviously they feel that he is doing a decent enough job to where it makes them money, so they have no valid reason to get rid of him. The only other way that Cook would not be CEO is if he were to personally step down.

      Well, their plan is to get people to move from low-cost laptops to iPads so this sort of thing is bound to happen. If it does end up happening, there really isn't any competition for Apple in tablets which will be a huge benefit for them. Not saying that the iPad is ready to do that at all but then again, the only thing limiting an iPad from replacing computers is it's OS.

    I think the Macbook will reduce its price and be the "macbook air before" (kinda same trend over here), then macbook air is the portable but has much decent perfomance that will replace the Macbook Pro 13 non touch, and Macbook Pro will completely offer just with touchbar forever. That would lineup of Product offering and Pricing would make more sense.
    Probably in 2019:
    Macbook starts at 999
    MBA starts at 1299
    and MBP starts at 1699

    I bought a Macbook Air and had to return it. Personally, I thought the screen was fine, but the performance was just too bad. Swiping between desktops or to the dashboard had really low frame rates. Scrolling through pdfs was also choppy and somewhat laggy, even with only one app running. For a new $1400 machine, that should not have been happening. I returned it and got the Pro, and it's way better. I'd say go for the 2018 pro, Bestbuy is always running deals and you could easily score $300 off the base model, bringing it down to $1400 (what you would pay for the Air with 256 gb). The benefits you get are definitely worth it.

      I looked at the Air in the store and never noticed any issue with the screen -- until these videos told me there was one. I bought it anyway, to replace my 12" Macbook -- and I couldn't be happier. Two things, though. First, I use my computer primarily for watching shows, surfing, and writing, and I wanted the better keyboard and bigger screen, and was willing to sacrifice a bit of portability for that. I couldn't be happier with how it performs these things. And then, I use it almost entirely indoors and live in a cloudy place. I can see that I wouldn't be able to use it outdoors in brilliant sunshine -- but I would seldom get either the urge or the chance to do that! Indoors, my brightness is cranked all the way up most of the day, but at that level it's fine for me, I never feel the screen is too dim.

    • @TrentHarlan
      @TrentHarlan 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michele Hogan Would you say brightness level on the new Air is the same as it was on your 12" MB? On paper it's the same (300 nits). I bought my gf a rose gold 12" MB about a year ago and the brightness level on that seems just fine

    • @michelehogan7868
      @michelehogan7868 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TrentHarlan It's very subjective, but it feels the same to me. I would say that I turned my 12" MB screen's brightness down from maximum more often than I do this one. And I've only had this one for a week, but I haven't yet encountered a situation where I want the screen to be brighter and it just won't go. Put it next to my son's 2016 Pro, and I can easily tell the difference. But sitting by myself with this one, I have had no issue at all. And compared to the 12", the keyboard, Touch ID, and bigger screen are fantastic!

    The MBAir 2018 is not that bad as other reviewers or youtubers mention. For the price i'm already seeing price dropping. I bought it 5 days ago the "entry level" with 128gb in space gray to an electronic online retailer at 1000 dollars.
    And 300 nits it's not a bad brightness for a display and looks good.
    Runs smooth for average video/photo editing usage and also sketchup for 3D modeling works great for light projects...

    Good review, though I don't think you're getting "great hardware" in terms of specs - a dual core Y series chip and 128GB storage is not good value at this price, most of the laptop industry has gone to quad-core chips. Apple should have kept it at the $1000 price point, and it wouldn't muddy the waters between this, the Macbook and MBP (all priced near each other). I'm tossing up between getting this or going back to desktop with the Mac Mini...

    Yes, but it's not exactly "mobile" when it weighs 2.75 lbs and feels heavier... the 12 inch one is much more mobile and not much less powerful (Hate it that they discontinued it). Try Thinkpad X1 Carbon, now that's a mobile AND powerful laptop.

    The keyboard has a failure rate that is gaining a lot of negative attention. The commebts on the screen are valid - no laptop should need to be run at 100% every day and and still leave you feeling it's lacking 75 - 100 nits to make it bright enough to avoid eye strain.

    Great video. I really like the MacBook Air but I also like the MacBook Pro at the same price . I would mostly be using Final Cut Pro to do my basic editing on and then for the heavy stuff I would go to my Mac Pro. Would love to see how much of a difference and background rendering on both into remodels in FCPX. For its price point I really wish it had a 256 Flash Drive instead of 128.

    Sadly, I would have to agree. Coming from a 12” MacBook, when I look at them side by side in the store, the colours AND brightness levels are hideous. My 12” screen seems much much better

    Im switching from my MacBook Pro 13” 2015 to new MBA because it’s actually slightly more powerful and display brightness is just the same so not a big deal for me. Just contrast ratio is little bit worse on paper.

    I was waiting for this to come out but have now opted for the 13" pro without Touchbar. It has the screen brightness lacking from the Air, more powerful, better graphics, only slightly heavier and Apple has seen fit to promo it for black friday discounting the 256 to the same price as 128 in Canada. Thats basically the same price as the 2018 Air but with more value. All of this tells me the Pro w/o touchbar is due for a relaunch/update and even higher price to make the Air make sense. Until then the Pro blows the Air out of the water.
