    Something was definitely lost at the end of the PS2 era, no question. Not many modern games will evoke the feeling of nostalgia the true classics did.

      @Diwwah ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe it's just your youth that was lost. For me the PS2 era doesn't evoke nostalgia, because I was young during the C64/Amiga/NES/SNES era and that's where my nostalgia lies. :)

    37:55 -- Water behaved the same way in SR1 in the Spectral Realm. You would just run along the bottoms of ponds, lakes, etc., and water was as insubstantial as air. SR2 is actually very consistent with all the elements established in SR1.

    Something I appreciate a lot about games of this generation in hindsight is that gameplay systems weren't quite as standardized back then. Nearly every game that released back then attempted its own movement and combat systems at a bare minimum. A lot of them ended up not being very good, but at least they offer something unique when you go back to play them.

    46:41 "The mountain's interior was hollow, I discovered, and graced with soaring architecture unique to its creators. As with the outer facade, these balconies and galleries could only be reached by those gifted with flight. With only my ruined wings to carry me, this towering labyrinth seemed impassable, and the object of my quest lay just beyond my grasp. For here, suspended at the apex of the chamber, was the threshold that surely led to the great vampire himself. I didn't know whether Janos Audron was the monster depicted in the stronghold, or one of the noble creatures memorialised among the ruins of the ancient vampires, but I didn't care. Demon or angel, he alone held the key to my destiny."
    Figured I'd transcribe the moment for anyone struggling to parse the words over the music!

    Raziels's voice over about the killing fields and the Sarafan play when he finds examples in the other direction, but it's nice to see the devs anticipated that some players wouldn't stay railroaded.

    Regarding the "something was lost after the ps2 era" comment, what was lost was passion for the craft and the need to have games finished at launch. The game industry was exploding when ps3 came out and it became more about making money than making good games.

    • @CrashCraftLabs

      yup thats when they started calling themselves AAA devs without producing enough AAA games to warrant it, then changed the meaning of AAA to be games by the big devs only when its really a grading system for the games only haha and without innovation thay can never be one AAB at best and with the bugs ADB at best haha

  • @ChocolatierRob
    @ChocolatierRob ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Oh man, you and Raziel are quite the pair. Janos Audron is fighting for his very survival in the next room while you and Raziel are just slowly talking and philosophising. Raziel is just standing around flexing and cracking his spine while you talk. Pause the game to chat you monster! Your mentor is getting murdered in there! 😂

    Shame about the audio balance, but the ambient track playing in Audron's retreat is one of my favourite bits of SR2. A haunting mix of alienness, solitude, and melancholy.

      just unlucky that the Raziel's monologue had to happen right at the music's oboe part (or whatever that instrument is). The whole track is amazing indeed.

    Timeline time!
    Year -500 : Raziel emerges from the third time streaming chamber at the age of the Sarafan and meet Janos Audron.
    Year -20 : William the Just is killed by a vampire assassin (Kain), Moebius's crusade begins.
    Year 0 : Death of Ariel/Birth of Kain. Raziel's first time travel emergence. Raziel spared Kain when History and Destiny collided.
    Year 30 : Kain becomes a vampire and kills every members of the Circle. Vorador is killed and Kain refuse the sacrifice.
    Year 130 : This is when Raziel emerge the second time from the time streaming chamber after being stranded by Moebius. He then use the third one to go to the past.
    Year 1500 : Raziel is thrown in the Abyss by his brethren, all of this ordered by Kain.
    Year 2500 : Raziel emerge from the Abyss and all the events of the frst Soul Reaver occurs.

    I confess, I've only just started watching this part of your playthrough but I feel I need to address something you said toward the last few moments of your previous episode.
    I originally posted this in response to the first episode of your 'Soul Reaver 2' playthrough, but thought it may help to clarify a little.
    'The final room in which you find yourself, the Subterranean Ruins, is not the same place in which Kain builds his throne. This room lies beneath, underground. The clearest indicator of this is the fact that the platform upon which the Pillars stand is different, along with their inscribed runes. This room has not been seen before this point throughout the series...'
    There's SO, SO, SO much more that I would love to share but shan't for fear of spoiling your enjoyment of what may lie ahead... ;)

    Regarding what you said at around 16:10 two of these games are FF X /FF X-2 and FF XII.
    In Europe and the rest of the west, we got basically the day one edition, while in japan FF X and X-2 got rebooted once and FF XII even got it twice.
    Only after they where remasterd for newer consoles (ps3/4 and so forth) did we got the version of those games that were almost a decade old in japan at that point.
    And it where no small changes either, for FF XII the whole battle system and level system got reworked to what is now "The Zodiac Age"
    And for FF X/X-2 there where new dungeons and costumes added as well as balancing reworks done.

    • @blackwidow7804

      Yes and Zodiac age was amazing. It was my very 1st PS4 game and it fixed every problem i had with the PS2 version. For me Zodiac age is the best FF in terms of combat and overall 2nd best FF game after FF9.

    15:00 to throw some shade on those rose-tinted glasses; plenty of games released with bugs and glitches. They just couldn't be fixed, so they became hidden features.
    (examples: things like the Vanish/Doom/X combo in FFVI, or the fact that some of the stats just didn't work. Or combos in SFII (never intended, but embraced after everyone found them)

    • @Mapocolops
      @Mapocolops  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That is so different compared to games releasing today in fundamentally broken states with the mentality of “fix it later” while pushing DLC, battle passes and micro transactions for a game they might just pull from storefronts a couple years later.
      Hidden features and small bugs and glitches (which I acknowledge in this video) is not due to lack of trying, they had to ship to the best of their ability a completed product

    Gaming has become far more mainstream. As a result, there are a lot of gamers who treat old games as if it were an old iPhone or an old version of some productivity software that is fundamentally worse.
    I mostly play retro games. I'm very selective when it comes to new releases.

  • @fireidar

    You weren't supposed to go back to the Sarafan stronghold at the start of the video. The line Raziel gave about his 'brothers' at the pillars is SUPPOSED TO happen AFTER Janos. "I had seen the HUMAN face of the vampires" was reference to Janos.

    • @crust5909

      Interesting. I thought it was because of the deleted scenes from the beta where Raziel interacted with the vampire folks being persecuted (you can find it on youtube its called Soul Reaver 2 Beta - Vampire Cutscenes).
