I always wonder how I can made a format with my ( old ) gear in a word were everyone do hipsteresque reviews and "oh my god, look all this lights if I press the buttons" 2 minute shorties. I even plan to do such green screen background video's instead of the comman cactuses and figurettes on the desk...

When I was about 10 or 11 years old my mom phoned me whilst on holiday in the UK, she asked me if I want one of these. With my seriously limited knowledge and only or two images I may have seen of it on the 56k internet I asked her to ask the salesman who she was speaking to if you could "change the CD" I remember hearing him say yes and I was now under the ignorance based imression that the greatest feature of this machine was that it could somehow read my CD's and emulate a turntable and I would be able to "scratch" My CD's. This was probably the year 2001 or so, so this was a big deal.
I have never been so disappointed and broken inside in my entire life. My worst breakups pale in comparison to the heartache I experienced. I still remember sitting with it on my lap after the truth became apparent and feeling the guilt wash over me as I could not hide the disappointment from my mother.
13 years or so later I hooked it up to a DAW via midi and realized I could access the multi part synthesizer including the rhythm track which basically meant I had a very funny looking, albeit complete sound module, quite capable of being edited via midi CC with however many different arrangement setups as there were preset songs on the device itself (over 200?) the joy I got from this made up for much of the sorrow that came from that bitter experience.
I lost it and I wish I hadn't because I use midi more than ever now and I realized how capable it really was especially as a drum module considering that rhythm track on whichever midi channel it was allocated. So that was me and my DJX-IIb

barely would my watery eyes clear enough to read the rest of the comment , but then id get back to the same part and break down time and time again. so funny. thanks.

@@allabouttheclassics9522 yes, one of the midi channels is the drums section and the others are the bass, pads, leads etc. All sounds are accessible via midi on different channels. It's really great because you have so many different styles of drums all arranged as kits for each style of music you select. As far as I remember the synth sounds can be edited and automated via midi cc too. Filter, resonance etc... although I don't remember how deep this went.

Wish I still had mine. It has greater potential than most users realize. I used it as a sound module for my Yamaha RM1X and it was fantastic. Every control panel function is accessible and expandable via midi. I only sold it because I allowed others to influence me into doing so. That little "toy" has a sonic character of its own. It was manufactured for beginners and advanced musicians. If I can find one in excellent condition, I'd buy it for a reasonable price.

Got the original DJX, only bought because I lived in a small town and proper synths were thin on the ground. Kept it a while then thought, I may as well sell, but first I reviewed a few of the sounds, only about five sounds in before I decided to keep it. Now it’s become a bit of a cult classic. Sure the preset patterns are very dated, but I can bend the sounds to my will! Stick it in a mix with professional synths and gain some underground kudos.

I bought mine at a car boot sale for £20. I'm trying to use it as a sound module, and could do with some help with midi implementation with my Oxygen 8 midi keyboard I picked up for £5. I need to know how to access the various banks, front panel controls and effects without having to scroll through all the patterns. Assigning knobs to the live effector controls and other parameters....Program changes are weirdly distributed over 16 MIDI channels. Three channels of drum sounds (9-12), one bass channel (13) I am currently using it in conjunction with Seq24, a pattern based MIDI sequencer. Getting a lot out of it with some persistence! I also have a Yamaha QY10 (again picked up at a car boot for £2)....it would be a dream to get it connected up to the DJX box to go DAW-less, but nor so easy to set up MIDI as with a multitimbral keyboard. I personally like the DJXiiB....it has lots of great sounds! I have to marvel at the amount of effort that must have gone into programming all those pattern variations.....some toy!

The first thing that came to my mind, as soon as you switched this one on, was...... MC-303! 😄 And two seconds later, you come up with the same idea. That cannot be coincidence. They seem to be made one for another! 😂👍 But... I must say that when you showed this string up/down thing I was quite impressed! Maybe the Yamaha DJX needs a part 2 video? Would be cool to see what else it can do! I'm also wondering if (and where) I may have fiddled with the keyboard version. I honestly cannot recall... but this thing looks familiar! But hey... the most important question still is.... What do I do with my MC-303. I honestly I never dug really deep into it, cause the presets are so bad that once Preset #001 starts playing (over and over again) you already wanna switch it off. I know I was programming some drum patterns back in the day but I honestly never had much love for the unit.... So my question is.... are there any hidden gems when it comes to the sounds? Can one make it sound like a real 303... which we all expected but (at least I) never achieved? Could it help to hook it up to a DAW and control it via MIDI to extract ANY decend sounds from it. (Fragen über Fragen.....) Even after all these years MC-303 is a mystery too me!!
But back to the Yamaha... as said, it would be cool to see what else this thing can do. Could this be fun for live performances or rather as an inspiration for the studio or none of the above?
(If one can scoop it up for a few bucks of course....)

Just watched it again! :) so many memories..... by the way you didn’t mention a bunch of things about the handling (but most of it is not important today for using it as midi sound module) ... here are some more features: 1) Only preset patterns, no way of programming you own music. 2) Individual parts of the patterns can be muted via spinning the cd controller 3) What’s muted or not carries over when switching patterns, so at least you can make performances that sound somewhat different from other DJX IIb owners. 4) You can scratch 5) I joined a band as “Scratch DJ” using my DJX IIB to scratch and play drum loops (again preset loops only, but at least I could mute the instruments, and EQ, Filter and use FX to taste) .... after 2 years of fun with the DJX IIB, I “upgraded” to a “Yamaha RM1x” groove box which was awesome to program and sounded similar but better yet still dated by 2003 standards but without live scratching it wasn’t as fun. Still much better than the DJX IIB. Borrowed a numark turntable later in addition to have more fun when performing live again. (I made both dance and HipHop)

I think it's great, Yes! It is a toy BUT it's about creativity and as a sound source it has some neat sounds and patterns amongst the many very cheesy ones.
People who say bad things are usually just gear snobs, just like you get with hi-fi or bands etc.
You will always get snobs with their expensive Uber tech looking down their noses.
The Speak and Spell toy has been used on many tracks and when samplers first came out you had the likes of Yello and Depeche mode sampling all kinds if noises to be used in tracks and they're now considered as pioneers.
I say if it makes noise and you have some creativity, then you can use these 'toys' and make tracks with almost anything.
