  • Testing BRAND NEW Gold Bars Worth Over $200,000 With My Gold Dealer (PART 3) showcases my bullion dealer walking the viewer through the process of taking old gold jewelry and melting it down into huge gold bullion bars. My precious metals dealer discusses why it's crucial to do these gold melts and what he looks for when going through scrap gold jewelry, gold watches, and other items which contain both silver and gold.

    Thank you for your video. For those who are unfamiliar with the gold melting procedure, the reason why borax is melted with the gold is because it is used as a flux. Molten flux acts as a barrier against oxygen in the air and floats off lighter weight impurities. When cooled the solidified flux now known as slag becomes vitreous, brittle and easily cracked. The metal purity assay which Andrew Henn demonstrates on his Thermo Scientific Analyzer is known as X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectroscopy which determines the composition of metals scanned in a sample. The other metal assay which a gold sample is sent out is called as a fire assay. A fire assay is also known as Cupellation where the gold sample is combined with measured out portions of other metals and together wrapped inside a small envelope made of lead foil. The packet is carefully weighed to determine its initial weight. Then the packet is placed in a small crucible called a Cupel and put in a hot kiln for melting the mixture of metals. Because the Cupel is made from a special porous heat resistant material, it will absorb molten impurities and other metals except for gold. At the conclusion, the remaining pure gold button is weighed to determine its final net weight. The calculation of the weight loss of the other metals and impurities determines gold purity compared from the start when the sample had impurities in it to its final weight when it has now been refined into pure gold.

    This makes perfect sense to me. I spend most of my time watching TH-cam mining and prospecting, or chemistry channels. So I've seen alot of processes demo'd for refining gold from raw ore or on some of the chemistry channels different ways to seperate jewelry into pure gold and silver. But I'm always interested in what process each professional uses with precious metals. This helps me understand this step in the metal recycling process and how we end up with the final product of 24K refined, weighed, and stamped gold bars.

    Do you refine further? The bar ended up at 13.5kt, might be worthwhile to inquirt the gold with copper and use nitric acid to remove the impurities. Also electricity could be used with a dilute nitrate solution. You will be left with gold mud plus coppper and silver on the cathode. The gold comes out about 99.9 pure if no platinum group metals are in the mix.❤

    Best waxy to purify gold scrap is to inquartation and nitric acid boils after to remove the silver and other base metals .after you do that a few times until theres no more reaction then its time for aquarega to dissolve the gold let it cool then use metabolic sulfate to bring the gold out of the liquid whats left is pure 999.9 fine gold

    43yrs smelting I will add just this 1 thing. His slag buildup is due to rapid cooling before allowing it to cool a bit before dipping/washing causing the buildup to spread. Can remove the amount by doing a slow cool (letting it air cool) then dipping or the easiest way to remove it is while the gold is molten by using a graphite or fused silica stirring rod to skim off the slag. Slag when cooling as he did will gather some gold as well educing the end weight, skimming before pouring doesnt (if you do correctly). The only difference is with 24k gold obviously because of its lack of other components inside i.e copper (which causes the majority of slag in gold pours) but anything less than 24k you always wanna skim to reduce loss and save yourself a hour or two of cleaning. Also 8% silver is 100% WORTH refining out of the bar lol. 8% of that is about 72sv ounces worth well over 1500. And removing silver from gold is pretty easy so not sure what he meant by its not worth it lol that def incorrect. 8.2/10 id say, minor operation it looks like so cant fault the guy. But NEVER let someone tell you 8% silver in a 100oz bar isnt worth extracting 🤣 in fact, I would have extracted the other metals before pouring a full bar since you lose a % during the pour so now on his extract he will have to repour and lose another %.

    • @devinjenkins4752
      @devinjenkins4752 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mind you the more you slow cool it the more congregated the slag will be and easier it is to remove. If done right you can take a basic scrapper or anything hard and scrape the slag right on off. Also steel is 40% stronger than gold, using a steel wool over sand paper is a no-no when de slagging. It may not look like it but there is gold being removed layer by layer and even on the hammer you hit it a few times and look at the hammer head, it will have a gold tint. ALWAYS use low grit sandpaper as even 200 grit is 50% weaker than gold and will remove its sand before removing any gold. I used to do what he did back in the 90s but no more. Now instead of a 6% loss on a 100oz pour I only lose 2% and its ALL from the pour never the cleaning as I now use low grit sandpaper over wire brush.

    I use borax in bronze casting. Its stops it oxydising and makes it flow better. Those xray machines are amazing. In the past the only way to test a sample would have been a fire assay I guess. The numbers he got from this gold bar tell you how little gold is actually in your gold jewelry.. Not sure about gold but I used to deal in a lot of silver and the UK had the best touch marks and highest values. When you get down to asian silver it was rarely marked so you could get very good deals on it if your willing to take a chance..

    The amount of shielding around the XRF analyzer is quite small. To me, that indicates it is a low power beam that measures surface scatter, rather than deep beam penetration. That's OK, if you are aware of that limitation and you mix the molten stage well and are dealing with honest people. It's too easy to bury a tungsten bar in the center, so before I would purchase such a bar, I would drill a few holes and test the shavings. This video was edited very well. No fluff and nothing to waste my time, so you earned me as a new subscriber. Thanks for posting this.

    These commenters are silly. It was an interesting step in the journey of high volume gold sales, not a heres a bar to stack video. Thanks for the content!

    Super cool video! Interesting but not too difficult of a process.

    I might be over-thinking it, but I assume the end machine measures the % of the elements in the bar not by weight but by volume. And based on Gold weighing nearly twice as much as silver, wouldn't that mean a higher amount of gold is actually in the bar?
    For example: If the machine read 50% gold and 50% silver by volume, that actually means 66% gold and 33% silver by weight.

    Interesting process! I wonder how does Andrew extract the silver from the gold bar?

      The companies I sell to refine the metals and separate them. I’m sure they get every metal you see on that X-ray machine. The silver, copper, zinc. It’s separated chemically.

    I dunno if he pre heated the mold he poured the gold in but my guess was now. If he did the surface of the gold would be a bit smoother. Thanks
