  • This video follows the engine removal of the MerCruiser Sterndrive engine out of my 1986 Chris Craft.
This is the part 1 of 2 videos in which I cover the required components and bolts you need to remove in order to remove an Alpha One Transom assembly.

    Great video.
With all your experience, what would be the best steering upgrade on a MC1 188hp, with non power assist mechanical?
    Hydraulic?

Ted do you know the correct nut size for the upper studs on the actual gimbal housing, it's the fine threaded stud. I cant remove the stud to bring it too a hardware store. Thanks

I replaced my transom, when i put the gimbal housing back on do i have to angle the drill holes in the new transom. I noticed the bolts on the gimbal housing are angled.

I would recommend a transom cutout/drill template. And the transom bolts are not drilled at an angle they are all perpendicular or 90 degree angle to the transom.

Good video. I’m looking to upgrade my Alpha 1 Gen 1 steering cylinder to a Gen 2. Do you know if they will just swap out?

What is the difference between a Gen 1 and a Gen 2?

In 1991 MerCruiser launched the Alpha GEN II which is a totally different transom assembly and outdrive. They are similar to the early GEN 1 (just called Alpha One) but the parts are totally different and the housings are different sizes, (nothing is compatible).
