Greedfall makes you check the box for Bioware's logo, as it feels like yet a AA Dragon Age, Mass Effect, or Knights of the Old Republic and it's a beautiful thing. It's not perfect and is definitely sometimes constrained by its budget but man does it have heart and play out of its league in the best way. Dive in to see how developer Spiders finally achieved the Bioware inspired vision they've been perfecting for years!

Amazing video man, has way less views than it deserves. You speak clearly, with passion and with good flow and this video is really well structured all throughout. You should be really proud of yourself for making this and I can't wait to see future videos. I pray the algorithm picks you up soon 💜
Thats awfully kind, made moreso by its specificity and sincerity. One of these days! Just gotta keep putting work in!
@@MidnightMedium Very true but with work like this, it's just a matter of time. Much love 💜
@lukedave9998 thats awfully kind to say. Thanks very much for the encouragement!
I played this in 2022 and despite the jank had an amazing time. I’m a sucker for swashbuckling adventure and the setting feels like it was made just for me
That's me as well! Just good fun and a unique, cool world. We need more powder centric weaponry in games in general!
This video is truly sets a new bar for quality for your videos, my peak detector won’t stop beeping
Ah thanks dude! Dont wear out that peak detector now
You sold me. After I beat BMW, Stellar Blade and Warhammer 2 I'll try Greedfall. 🤘😄
Awesome, i hope you love it!
Wow, With the quality of this video i was shocked when i saw you only have 5k subs... you deserve so many more dude!.
Great review mate.
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!
I still need to finish Greedfall. Where The Technomancer (also composed by Olivier) felt like I was playing a Mass Effect game, my time with Greedfall always felt like a Fable game in many ways and simultaneously The Witcher.
Fables very similar feeling with the guns and swords combo, I agree!
Only thing I didn't like about the game was you really needed to use specific dialogue choices to get your romance option. I didn't even realize I failed to romance Siora until the end of the game hahaha
Dude, holy crap those right options could those be specific. The only predictable thing i noticed was that no character liked to be outright flirted with or flattered. You always had to instead pick something that affirmed their character without sucking up.
I have played some of the older BioWare games like Baldurs Gate 1, Neverwinter Nights and Kotor 1. I have not played any of the new BioWare games besides their MMORPG "Star Wars the Old Republic. Wishlisted Greedfall, the overarching theme seems interesting. A mix of a past historical era with Dark Fantasy. Kinda gave me some of the vibes from New World which offers a similar theme.
Congrats on earning Greedfall 2. I hope the early access works well for the game and the studio. I found out Grinding Gear Games is doing a similar Early Access approach for Path of Exile 2. Maybe other Indie or AA studios might do this approach for their games before it officially reaches its 1.0 from a big budget early access release.
Yeah i think the way different mechanics may be why they decided the workshop approach.
You forgot to mention female v from cyberpunk 2077. I can completely vouch for that rule too 😂 I have this game in my backlog, not sure if I will ever have time to play it though. I have games before it. Your channel is too good, I love how it feels like a celebration of games rather than just hatred. You always sound like someone who actually likes playing games and talking about them. Such a breath of fresh air.
I played female V. She was a little tryhard for me XD oh yeah playing is best but getting to share about them, close ass second!
@MidnightMedium I can see that, but I think overall I enjoyed her voice more than male V. There are also some parts where the voice acting is just stellar.
Shes always trying too hard to be husky and masculine then trails into some cutesy whisper at the end. Just kinda cringey as the kids say. But regardless, im still trying to think of a fun angle for a Cyberpunk video. I finished Phantom Liberty not too long ago, got me interested in going back thru
A thoughtful and well-articulated review which provides a compelling reason to give this one a shot. Very curious to see how Greedfall 2 improves upon this design.
Thanks very much! Unfortunately its getting dogged day 1 for performance and for the combat changes. Anxious to dive in and see for myself
Spiders to me, feels like a game company that while I respect their passion and creativity, struggle mechanically and sometimes and narratively with their games. I watched a playthrough of Steel Rising last year - their attempt at a Souls-like - and had to drop out several videos in because of how many confounding design decisions they'd made. And it seems to be a constant thing with them. Mars: War Logs and the Technomancer also have similar issues.
I get that they want to step into Bioware's shoes and fill that void, but sometimes I feel like they try to bite off more than they can chew.
Greedfalls the only game that felt like it was really free enough of jank. Steel Risings whacko controls and enemies being able to track you around obstacles while attacking was cheap
@@MidnightMedium Not to mention for me, the open environments that enabled ignoring combat, the open areas with invisible walls that broke the illusion of a vast world and spammable items that could trivialize boss fights.
Yeah, loved the aesthetic of Steel Rising but a little too loose. Plus Soulslikes really dont do much for me anymore
OK, ok, how in the seven hells have I randomly stumbled upon Mandalore's long lost brother. This is great. I still struggle with making the video flow as well as you do. Well done. Respect.
The game itself, I have it, played it once back in the day but I am ITCHING for another playthrough. It really has that secret sauce, doesn't it? It just, for the lack of a better argument, feels good to play.
I think my only complaint was combat being easy late game (duh) and I remember laughing at the "romance". I tried my best to be nice to that native woman while absolutely blasting and being mean to the science lady. Guess who came to my bedroom at the end?
Ye, the science lady. Maybe she has some unresolved father issues.
:) Yeah, I think you're about the fifteenth person to say I sound like Mandalore. I def see the similarities. And also thanks for complimenting the flow, another person said that too which is funny cuz i hacked this one to pieces before posting it, so that's really good to hear.
Haha, no kidding. Yeah, the romances were pretty awkward as only one of them worked, i reloaded a save after i got the achievement for one romance so i could do the others but none of the others would ever generate a dialogue line to end the romance chain
I really enjoyed this game, but I felt like no one else really liked it very much
Yeah figured id do my part as many people slept on this game. I know i almost did
This is going to be next on my list. I crave some old Buoware goodness, it's a shame that we see so little of that today
Really is. I hear some rumblings Veilguard might be good but you never know. The standards become so low these days
I've eyed this game for a while, I'm more intrigued after this vid. Maybe I'll buy
Yeah, it's a good time :)
I played this back whenever it was on the gamepass it was really good in places and not great in others
Me too!
3:20 Steve Zahn sighting!
Guys great! This is from White Lotus season 1 if you wanna check it out
@@MidnightMedium I didn’t…. until I learned just now he was in it. Thanks!
Yeah hes easily one of the best parts!
Great video, amigo. Spiders aren't perfect but they always do their damndest with a passion, and I respect that.
Yes, i can just see the clear commitment to improvement. Its really nice to see
OH, one of my fave games??? Thanks for reviewing this! Excited to see your review!
It's funny, I've only played BG1 from bioware's older games, but I can see a resemblance. I agree with all the points made in this video. The world-building is deep enough for this game to be as memorable as it is.
Also also, dating the naut is always the right choice. I think I even chose the same character model for my first playthrough!
Hes the only one who would budge! I did everyone elses quests and no one else would like me enough so i couldnt get those achievements.
Once I find the time to finally finish DA:O, this is definitely a contender for my next bigger CRPG experience. Then again, I still haven't played ME2 and 3... But damn if this video didn't make me want to play Greedfall. Damn you Medium.
I'm a son of a bitch like that! Main goal of this video was to spur people to play it and that's why I cut about 15 minutes of spoilers and stuff because I knew most people wouldn't even know what this is so that would be lost on them. Absolutely play ME2 btw. 3s a good playing game but a pretty dumb story.
New sub! Keep Up the good work!
You rock! Thanks for checking me out!
I bought greedfall day one and completed it within a week. I remember I enjoyed my time with it, I played as a mage and I remember being op as heck. Never played since for some reason but seeing this im definitely going to give it another go. I like the idea of a rapier and gun wielding rogue type for this one.
Wow! I beat Greedfall in about a week or so for this video but that was playing it just about non stop; would not recommend but hey, when you're having fun, hard to put it down. Yeah tell me how melee goes, it always seemed way too dangerous for me
@@MidnightMedium that was back when I could take a weeks holiday for a game I was looking forward to and binge it. 2 kids and a wife later means I’m lucky to get 5/7 hours a week gaming never mind 40 plus 🤣
I totally hear that. Im still trying to imagine how hard itd be to do TH-cam work if i started having kids!
@@MidnightMedium now that I think about it, I’m positive my first character was a two handed warrior and I really didn’t like melee which is why I restarted after a few hours and went mage. I’ll defo be starting a new play-through this week and I’ll let you know what I think of the melee.
Ride on! Yeah melee just seemed like itd suck since magic kinda lets you cheat by comparison XF
I really liked the first greedfall despite all its flaws (mostly the game starting to stretch a bit in its last part, the copy pasted stuff... but overall good game),
I kinda lost interest in the second one since it's early access so I'll wait once it's released for real but I hope it's good too and that they corrected the few problems the first one had
Yeah, I need to get in there and see how 2 is. I hate experiencing fractions of games, especially if I like something and it never grows or reaches its potential. That's worse than just playing a weak game XD
@@MidnightMedium yeah and it's even worse with rpgs, games where you already spend a looot of time and are super invested usually... That's why I also never touched BG3 early access haha
but anyway, it's cool that Spiders sent you a key so I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts about Greedfall 2 if you do a vid on it :)
Yeah im really strategizing whats the most useful way to use my access to it early so its useful
I've been meaning to play this, it's taking up space in my drive rn might as well do something with it
The time is now!
Great work. Enemies look too spongy for me, but I like the concept. Appreciate your breakdown of builds and what you found to work (magic) vs not quite so much (traps).
Def some way too spongey bosses but magic is yo frandddd
wait this video was upload 5 hours ago ? not years ? omg so it is totally valid to point:
First run mage->2nd technician(not trash, come on )->3rd paladin/warrior
Companions only progress with equipment and there is no crafting system (there is a upgrading system) so you need to buy the best equip you can to give them.
Those incriminatories document NPC left all over the places should be behind a stealh+steal system for sure. They even already had the sneak attack
good video
Ooh i like the idea that finding out stuff should be its own skill!
I do miss old bioware
They absolutely ruled
I agree it’s worth a play, the combat is jank for sure but the story is what carried it for me.
I didn’t try the magic build but the other two almost became unnecessary once you learn how to make bullets
The only thing that irked me was the ending, I don’t like it when I can beat a game and immediately load the previous save to dialog choose the other ending.
Yeah the endings were way too abrupt for me honestly
Saw that Greedfall 2 just came out a couple days ago, I played and finished Steelrising about a month ago and liked it despite the jank. GF2 seems to have lame combat so my interest died but this video was recommended and I can see GF1 used to have different combat. I'll likely get it on sale
I need to check out 2 because people are really down on the combat. Curious to see for myself
I own this, I should play it. I think I played the intro, like before you sail away to the new world, but adhd distracted me
I hear that. Intros a bit involved and takes an hour or two
I really need to get on this still have a sealed copy will probably boot this once im done with killzone SF.
Ah, thats awesome! Shadowfall never quite gripped me. I was more of a Killzone 3 kinda guy
@@MidnightMedium whooo Shadow falls was ok like mercenaries much more, but about 7 hours on Greedfall and it's definitely giving me Kotor vibes loving it.
Im so glad youre having a good time!
Greedfall was great but you can pretty much max out your stats before the half way point of the game and combat becomes boring
Yeah after level 20 i was roflstomping people
Greedfall always felk like an extremely shallow games, from faction to monster diversity to zones, to companions, I don't understand the nostalgia around it at all, I refunded it at the time
I mean it's definitely smaller in scope than the average AAA rpg of this same ilk but that's kind of to be expected. I'd actually like this game/series to lean into its smaller budget and not drag things out so much or feel compelled to. Get us to the good stuff
The reason was at the time it came out, it was one of the only original IP that was
- NOT a BR
- NOT a remake/remaster
- NOT COD
- A CRPG with artstyle reminisce of Dragon Age.
Word!
Greedfall deserves to be called Dragon Age more that Dragon Age Veilguard
Veilguard looks....better and worse than you'd hope. Like the State of Play footage that came out had a great looking/acting boss but just overproduced, silly voice acting and impactless attacks from the playable character. Amazing how much money goes into games to make them feel as weightless and wimpy as possible
This game looks like it's packed with girl boss NPCs. Hard pass.
Bro
@@MidnightMedium Bro
You're talking about Dragon Age Veilguard.
This is Greedfall.
@@tartatovsky Well DA: V too. I haven't played Greedfall but everytime I see a cutscene from this game it has a girlboss in it. If you're telling me I'm wrong then maybe I'll try it.
Really none of that energy here. Im particularly sensitive to where that kinda stuff is being crammed in and that really never came up here.
Greedfall is just a really dumb name.
I think its kinda kewllll
A game talking about colonialism. I’ll pass
Oh I get it. It's not the most subtle game in the world. Sometimes it's wildly over the top, but only a couple of times. I was surprised that it wasn't any more heavyhanded
Stick to Madden or Cod lil bro
Really? why? Honestly asking.
