Planting Buffalo Grass in The Poo Prairie

  • This is my second attempt at planting buffalo grass (Bouteloua dactyloides) here on Planet Mojo, and this time I believe it will work just fine. The first time, I neglected to plant a sample, so I had no idea what the baby grass would look like. A week or-so after planting, grass came up on the entire area that I planted - so I moved onto other things. By the time I realized that the grass I was seeing was foxtail, it was already too late!
    This time I have killed back the weeds/foxtail twice and have raked-in my buffalo grass seed, and am well aware that it will be about a month before it sprouts. I also have a sample, and know that it is a much finer grass than foxtail, and grows nowhere near as fast. I will pluck-out the foxtail here and there, and either weed whack above the tops of the buffalo grass or use a herbicide that kills foxtail but not buffalo grass.
    Like other prairie grasses, buffalo grass takes three years to become well established, and it could be five years until I have a dense monoculture stand, but that's OK, it will look better with every day, so I have that to look forward to! 😊

    This will be an interesting grass to grow! At some point, the majority of the grasses in-between the larger prairie grasses will be Buffalo Grass and Blue Grama so I really need to figure out how to get this stuff growing well!

    This Buffalo Grass sprouted after three days: Update on Buffalo Grass ― Sprouted After Three Days!!! - th-cam.com/video/hiIbVv4FjPk/w-d-xo.html
    I just planted another 1/4 lb. of grass at the end of July, and have not published the video yet, but the title is: "Planting Buffalo Grass in Mid-Summer ― Filling-In the Bare Areas" . It will be interesting to see how fast that sprouts, and how well it does. Today I will be spraying Quinclorac on the buffalo grass and the blue grama to kill back the foxtail and other weeds. I will likely make a video of that as well.

    The sand is an awesome idea. The seed clumps really bad by hand without it.
    I had to take 😞

    Excellent job in getting that planted, all that raking made my back hurt..... I never
    knew it took that long to grow. Hope to see how it turns out sometime in the future.

      I pulled a back muscle when I finished-up the next morning. Never rake sideways on a hill! It's all better now though 😊 We used that time to run to Milwaukee to see our newest grandson though, so it wasn't that bad 😊 We'll start to see results this year, but like all prairie grasses, they take three years to hit their prime.

      @@ccrx6700 Thanks Dave! It took forever for the boys to get started with the grandchildren, but hopefully they are going to keep coming regularly now. I love kids, and can't wait to show them around the woods and other fun stuff! 😊

    I planted buffalo grass as a turf grass here in northern Utah. The only drawback so far is my wife's dislike of the brown color during the winter.

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad you got it growing! As you may have heard, I messed-up the first time 🙁 We will have snow over it in the winter so that's not going to be a problem. Now I just got to get it growing!

      you can get grass dye and spray it over during the dormant season. won't hurt anything and still should save you money considering you likely aren't watering and mowing as much with buffalo grass

    I live in the panhandle of Texas where there is ample buffalo grass. Yes it is an amazing grass, the livestock love it. However in the landscape setting, it performs poorly in the shade.
    And yes the seed is hard to find and expensive.
    However buffalo grass is quick to send out runners and spread on its own. One only needs get a small nursery area established to transplant from to other areas.

    I’m about 5 weeks post seeding Buffalograss and it’s coming in nicely. I didn’t even soak mine… if I could do it over though, I would have watered the soil for a couple weeks after tilling to get a better control on the weed situation… I’m really fighting that now. I did put tenacity down as a pre-emergent and it worked for the thistles, but crab grass, spurge, purslane, etc are my enemies right now. Quinclorac is doing decent on the crabgrass, but I don’t want to use any 2,4-d or more tenacity until it’s more established. Just a constant battle ha.

      I'm going to do a post on the buffalo grass in a couple of days. The grass sprouted three days after tossing it! Last time it took at least three weeks. The soaking then allowing to sit in damp sand for a couple of days seems to have sped up the germination dramatically! I burned the area then killed it back twice. A bit of foxtail is starting to come in, but I'll whack the tops off of that in a couple of weeks.

      Thanks Patty! No, Natalie changed her plans, and has moved into the nearby town. She starts school later this month, and hopes to start her own business there when done. We will be going ahead with the tiny house though, and use it for a guest house. That will be next year though...

    Speaking of prairie grasses, how is that blue gramma grass coming along?

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Quite well! It is a very low starting grass to start with, so it will take a good three years to fully fill in, but it definitely has a good start! I'll be doing an update video on it shortly, stay tuned!

      Hi Larry. I will be netting as soon as the berries start to sweeten and become a target for the birds. likely the end of July, early August.

    Will you need to mow this buffalo grass?

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is used as a lawn by many these days, but ours will be natural and maybe mowed along the edges where it meets the lawn. If it's mowed, it will develop into a turf grass, and if left unmowed it will grow in a more clumpy form. We are going for the later as it will be a naturalized 'buffer' grass for when we burn in the future.

    Which website did you buy the grass seed from?

    • @PlanetMojo
      @PlanetMojo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought from a couple of suppliers last year (when this video was made) but this year I used Bamert Seed out of Texas. I actually just finished a third planting this year, and have had awesome germination rates. You may want to check the newer videos out. Good luck!
