i prefer this phone 10x times more than any iphone or galaxy! you know why? cause it's somethink different! ios and androids are work almost tha same (i did not say that are bad) but those 2 big brands compete each other for years and finally are go through the same review. I think blackberry deserves a second change after its economic fail. This phone is awesome and this is my opinion!
Thanks Mike. Man, that's tough. If it gets developer support, and subsequent mass adoption, yes, I think they will. If devs spend their time elsewhere, I'd doubt it.
I bought one outright from abroad(to avoid the March release date) to replace my Nexus 4, and I LOVE IT! Such a great OS. I really do hope that people won't think it's "just another blackberry" like I did before using it. If people give this a chance, and market share increases, I have no doubt that this will be a major OS in the US. BB is already doing a really good job getting the important developers on board even before it's released! Great review, Jon.
John, I love your unbiased videos. No matter that you say an Android is bad, iPhone is bad, or BlackBerry is bad, I won't dislike you one bit. Some TH-camrs are desperate, dedicated, and biased. One thing that keeps me watching your videos is your professionalism and objective, unbiased point of view. Keep it up bro.
i bought this device just for a change and for couple of weeks and I still own iphone 5 and Nexus 4 and note 2 but I have started to like it more and using it as my daily driver and iphone 5 as secondary device. I am loving it. I love the browser, email and HUB as well as multi tasking.
I've had the Z10 for about a month now, and I love this phone. I've never had a BB ever but my 3 year old Samsung was starting to do some funky things on its own. Went shopping for a S3 and chose a BB without any regrets. There's just so much flexibility with this phone and I love the built in HDMI port.
I picked up my new BlackBerry Z10 four weeks ago. I must admit that I am favourably impressed. It probably has features that I haven't figured out yet although downloading tutorials has paid off immensely. Do what you must.
I picked the Z10 up last Friday; switching from an iPhone 4s, and I totally agree with your arguments. What you said about the apps, and maps, again, i agree and especially coming from iphone, that is understandably frustrating. I look forward to future updates to correct these issues but all in all i think it is a great phone! And great videos Jon!
Great Review.. Thanks for the near Honest review of Blackberry Z10. I'm using it from past 3 weeks and absolutely in love with this! Highly recommended to everyone.
Best Review John.. Best review By Far unlike engadget, theverge ahem phonearena.. I will be getting the Q10 as soon as it launches in April.. I am a business guy and careless about unhappy birds.. excellent emailing, excellent web browser, good call quality good builld quality and above average battery life.. Am sold already.. thank you john for taking you time to use this phone before reviewing it... You Rock Man!
Great review, interesting to see how the battery differed from different users. Definitely the App selection would be a killer for me, but new operating systems are always welcome.
Really liked this review. Like the fact you used it a lot before reviewing. Like the fact you listed pro's and cons. And 8 is a reasonable score. Let's be honest, firmware is brand new so there will be quirks. Bugs will be ironed out in updates. I'm impressed with what I've seen so far.
Just recently sold my iPhone and not sure what to get now, my hold at to see what developers do with this thing. But I'm sure i'll make a few videos about whichever handset I decide to go for!
Watching this in 2022 & thinking man Blackberry was ahead of their time with the swipe gestures to go home, I remember seeing this when it first came out & thinking how dumb & now all our phones use the same swipe gesture.
The point I'm trying to make is that if you have a smart phone. You need to get through the day without the battery draining at 3 pm in the afternoon looking for a charger. What is the whole point of having cool apps on the iOS or Android if your phone can't even last 5 hours. Because Verizon and ATT probably pays apple or samsung to make sure the battery doesn't last long so people won't use as much data. Hard to believe they are innovating everything but the battery...
Just got my Blackberry 10 and im loving it! So smooth! Love the keyboard its like typing on a physical keyboard and the auto correction is the best better than the iphone hands down and worth every penny!
Great review! I have been waiting for this device for a long time and am really excited! I hope they get some of those O.S. quirks ironed out soon. I don't care about apps, but I know a lot of people do so I also hope they can get some great app support as well.
A fair and balanced review, and some useful tidbits of information sprinkled in there. I have to say though that a lot of the cons come down to personal preference and taste. For example, personally, I chose the PlayBook as my go to tablet and after almost 6 months of using it I really like it. Is it perfect? No of course not, but I did try the IPad Mini several times and I wasn't too impressed with it. At the end of the day it comes down to what kind of devices you like!
I was curious about that too. Whatsapp doesn't have an application for BB10 yet. However, if you go on their website, you can get them to email you the beta. The native application won't be out for another couple weeks
Wow it looks like they've definitely come a long way with the new hardware and especially software. The OS looks completely different. I had the Blackberry Tour 9630 and it was pretty good until it got outdated and every update of software made it extremely sluggish and laggy until it ultimately crashed. I gave up on RIM and BB in general after 8 refurbished phones, but after seeing this, I have some faith restored in them. I can't see the app world catching up anytime soon though.
One quirk that I noticed when trying out this device, was the speed in which applications launch; apps are put into the recent apps screen BEFORE they open, which seems a tad odd.
Mixed reviews on this device, but I personally like it a lot. Having used most of the current crop of iOS, Android and WP devices, It does just about everything I want from a smartphone every bit as well, if not better than the competition, and the apps that are missing (Google+, Maps, Instagram etc), I've no doubt will appear before long. All credit to BlackBerry on sticking to their guns and producing an excellent competitor to the market.
They should add a quick launch action. You set up 5 apps for quick launch. If you long hold the gesture area, those apps should pop up. That would be pretty cool and intuitive. Giving that gesture area more glory.
I have both of them now. I've used mine for business and I have to say that it edges out the iPhone 5 in quite a few areas and it's less expensive. The iphone 5 is good. No doubting it, but it's not the professional platform that the Z10 is. Multitasking is just a lot easier on the BlackBerry. I'm hearing a lot of people saying that the iPhone 5 is more or a toy and the Z10 is a tool. After using them both for two weeks, I have to that I agree with that analysis.
I have an Iphone 5 and my buddy has the galaxy s3 and we're both very impressed with this new phone, good job blackberry I hope this phone will get you back in the game
b Browser has more feature than Safari on my iphone and it is even faster than Safari in loading web pages. Desktop mode and flash support is awesome. love the email client with formating and proper file attachment which is something missing on my iphone.
I fully agree with you wth one minora adtion: Buy an Apple for the best gaming experience. Sadly the apps beside the games aren't that good, there's simply not enough customization to be had with iOS.
The TI OMAP is NOT a Snapdragon chip - Texas Instruments and Qualcomm are competitors in the mobile chip space. It seems there are actually two versions of this phone - the LTE one uses the Qualcomm 1.5GHz Krait Snapdragon, and the non-LTE version uses the Texas Instruments 1.5GHz OMAP 4470.
Good review, the app market is getting better day by day. Instagram, Skype, whatsapp and viber has already announced they are working on BB10 app. This could be my first BB smartphone.
I think it was a fair review, thanks for actually using the phone before the review. I believe it will smoke the iPhone but would like to hear your point of view on a comparison.
I believe that they do have a future. The Z10 and the Q10 look quite promising, but as you said, there's the app availability issue. I'm sure they'll become available over time, but the question is, how long?
if its anything like the playbook OS you have the choice to have the video stop playing while you multitask or to continue running in real time while you do other things. its just a setting in the setup menu
Since the new updates in os, this phone worth it with a lot of the apps becoming native as well as option to run the android counterparts, and about to get better this fall as the new os coming out.
Which comes with the launch of a whole new system. I am excited to be a part of Blackberry's comeback. It will happen, and they proved it with this phone!
i'm in love with this phone.. More you use it the more you get attached, despite the apps that are missing. It has a lot of potential. It's not perfect, but what phone is?
Just one thing, Non-LTE version doesn't have a Snapdragon chip. That version has the Texas Instruments chip you mentioned. Only LTE version has a Snapdragon S4 Plus SoC inside.
Actually they didn't start making this OS until late 2010. So it took them about 2 years to make. It also took time to realize that the old BBOS couldn't take them to where they needed to be to compete against their new rivals, to lay the groundwork for an overhaul, and acquire technologies they needed.
When people say that the bb10 app selection is bad, what does that entail? As a user that mainly uses their phone for social networks and rss feeds, does the lack of apps mean it lacks games and other such things? Or are the apps that are available are poor quality?
would you get z10 or q10? never used blackberry before. want to get a new phone from galaxy nexus. thought about s3 but I am afraid s4 is around the corner.
If a good physical keyboard is what you're looking for, there will [likely] be no better option (hard to say now without a real, solid review or hands on of it, though). As lacking as Blackberry has always been in the app department, I still found myself missing my Bold, way back when, during the days when I would switch back and forth from it and my now retired Nexus S. As someone who primarily texts/emails from my phone, I am anxiously awaiting the Q10.
Jon, Do you think Mophie will make a charging case for this and make the ports so deep it needs an extension and when I buy one they send the lemon of the group and claim I'm the only one who has this issue and make it seem like it's my fault and my iPhone shrunk or something? :-P Nice review...I like the new OS and the phone..
Gota love them reviews. you know what i like about technobuf. its that they give you the run down as it is and no personal opinion. thats what im talkin about
I have a Z10 and it's great, I love it. For me there is enough apps. I have never been and huge app user but most of the important ones are there. and it has been announced that instagram is coming. BB wasn't trying to make a iphone killer so I don't think it's fair to judge them on that. they want to me a solid 3rd and I think that have secured that spot for good.
Why hold the space bar when you could swipe down...? I'm reluctant to prefer the BBZ10 over the Note 2. I just won't let myself succumb to an all time low with a BB although it is a nice phone.
I'm very impresses with this phone, always wanted an blackberry before, but they made some bad calls in the past. IMO this is very good phone, and as matter of fact Blackberry announced that almost all of the apps that can be found on ios and android market are available on Blackberry world, so it will just take little time and this phone will have everything, and considering how good it is it will be worth a wait. Can't wait to get my hands on this baby :)
Imho get the BlackBerry Z10! Or if anything, if you like having a physical qwerty keyboard then get the Q10. I've done a lot of personal research on BB10 and their new phones and they're great! They have the potential to be even more amazing in the future and I'm planning to get the Q10 once my contract for my iPhone 4s expires.
Blackberry has a future. Ive alreay decided that I want one. Apps are not an issue with me. As things come up and look interesting, I might go ahead and download an app. But Blackberry knows its customer base and realised that it's supporters are not children looking to play games on their phones. Blackberry phones have a purpose to a specific demographic. Too much emphasis is placed on things that people dont need, Blackberry knows what it's customers need. They'll do well.
I just tried, and is a very good experience, i cant understand the techo fans that said that it suck, i love "new" contenders....they push the competition, if android doesn't exist, ios will never change, if WP never existed maybe android and ios wouldn't push further, and with BB10 now back in the game, maybe we will see more evolution ...WE ARE CONSUMERS...competition will always help us (price, quality, features, etc.) Sorry for the crappy english!
Thank you for the kind words and your support.

I believe same for windows phones. Sad Blackberry went for Android now...
I definitely agree. Developers really hold the future in their hands.
I'm excited to test a production version.
Browsing experience is 90% of what it is on Android or iOS, but it does have Flash support.
Thanks Mike. Man, that's tough. If it gets developer support, and subsequent mass adoption, yes, I think they will. If devs spend their time elsewhere, I'd doubt it.

Just picked this phone up earlier today. It's amazing so far. Took me a while to realize how to go back to the home screen.
Another excellent review Jon. I always love the fact you take some time to understand the device before reviewing.
After that "What's up everyone? Jon Rettinger from TechnoBuffalo here..." I think I could even watch a 30+ min video. You're AWESOME!

my iphone lasts more than a day, at 10pm, it still has 47%, didn't turn off GPS, TLE, Wifi....etc.. like I used to do with crappy Androids
you must have the fake me out ones from china becuase ive never seen an iphone userlast more then 2 hours...even if you dont use it a whole day....
My HTC one m8 used to last almost 2 days before I plugged it in. By saying used to I mean I don't have it any more because I sold it.
get a life idiot.
As soon as we get the review unit in!
I hope they do.

Blackberry has the best camera quality hands down... Even the old 5 mega pixels.. I wish I knew what company makes that lens...
It's pretty neat to see.
Adobe stopped supporting mobile flash on mobile.
Great review Jon, love your engaging style!

Great review mate, congratulations. I have a clear view on this phone now, after watching a couple of other reviews... :D
I plan on getting the next installment in the blackberry line. I would love to pick up a Z10 today, but can't for another 1 year and 5 months.
Doesn't the Z10 use a Snapdragon S4 (MSM8960)?
In the video Jon said it uses a Snapdragon processor but it said Ti OMAP 4470 in the text overlay...
Which comes with the launch of a whole new system. I am excited to be a part of Blackberry's comeback. It will happen, and they proved it with this phone!

A proprietary operating system means less down time? What do you mean by down time? And how would an OS have less of it just by being proprietary?
When people say that the bb10 app selection is bad, what does that entail? As a user that mainly uses their phone for social networks and rss feeds, does the lack of apps mean it lacks games and other such things? Or are the apps that are available are poor quality?
Yes you can sideload them via stuff like DPPB check goodereader app store for lots of apps to sideload.
would you get z10 or q10? never used blackberry before.
want to get a new phone from galaxy nexus.
thought about s3 but I am afraid s4 is around the corner.

Let us know what you decide.
how do you know what's a great battery for a phone? does it have to be a higher number?
Jon,
Do you think Mophie will make a charging case for this and make the ports so deep it needs an extension and when I buy one they send the lemon of the group and claim I'm the only one who has this issue and make it seem like it's my fault and my iPhone shrunk or something?
:-P
Nice review...I like the new OS and the phone..
Gota love them reviews. you know what i like about technobuf. its that they give you the run down as it is and no personal opinion. thats what im talkin about

Yeah, it's going to need to come down...a lot!
Not sure if I should get this or possibly wait for the htc one but it's super pricey
Nice review. Gotta start somewhere and I think it's a good start. Hopefully, they can get more core apps out for the US release.
Well, I am excited to see Blackberry's future, and once they get note apps and a better voice control, it'll be between the Z 10 and the S III for me.
Only tech blog worth my time!
Why hold the space bar when you could swipe down...? I'm reluctant to prefer the BBZ10 over the Note 2. I just won't let myself succumb to an all time low with a BB although it is a nice phone.
I don't know. Limited apps. Don't look like it's real customizable. Needs a lot of work before I try rim again.
really? all I can find is an unboxing video... I really like your reviews btw! Great stuff!
Hey John, comparing this phone to Ipone 5 and S3.....which is your pick?
Not anymore. I already went back and got a Masters degree. I think I'm done.
Another excellent review, Thanks Jon
I'm very impresses with this phone, always wanted an blackberry before, but they made some bad calls in the past. IMO this is very good phone, and as matter of fact Blackberry announced that almost all of the apps that can be found on ios and android market are available on Blackberry world, so it will just take little time and this phone will have everything, and considering how good it is it will be worth a wait. Can't wait to get my hands on this baby :)
yes you can. the app was ported from the Android app. The app is not available yet, but it's coming soon.
So you can't use SWIPE UP action in any application? For example in games and such?
Love your reviews!!
I love Blackberry and would love to go back if they can get their App situation together. Blackberry's email/text function is the best by far.
Great review, Jon!
Im getting the z10 but Ithink you should go with the s3 because this first z10 will be petty basic until software upgrades came be made.
I just tried, and is a very good experience, i cant understand the techo fans that said that it suck, i love "new" contenders....they push the competition, if android doesn't exist, ios will never change, if WP never existed maybe android and ios wouldn't push further, and with BB10 now back in the game, maybe we will see more evolution ...WE ARE CONSUMERS...competition will always help us (price, quality, features, etc.)
Sorry for the crappy english!
Me neither, just got the Nexus 4, I'm happy with it.
