I saw one here on my 4 acre property in southwest Michigan couple weeks ago. He was tearing up this old dead tree, made quite a mess. He was pretty big, too. Almost as big as a Raven. I'm lucky to have my property in a densely wooded area surrounded by bottomlands, marshes, rolling hills. In fact, right in the middle of my backyard is a marsh full of cattails. Further back in the woods runs a creek. Perfect habitat for the Pileated Woodpecker.

Great video, thanks. I often hear these beautiful birds in the woods near me but have never seen one close up - always flying away through the treetops!

They don't mind being heard but are difficult to see.I saw my 1st 2 pileated last week after living on my Arkansas farm for 5 yrs and they were awesome 4 a brief view.

I've watched a few woodpecker videos and they're all quickly pecking but in a tight and controlled way. Then this mad mad is just hacking away at the tree and letting out maniacal laughter 😂 I get why he's a cartoon character now.

It’s a bitch though, when they decide the eaves of you house, are a good place to peck. They are funny though, genuine woody woodpecks. They can be cranky too if you get new their nest. I bought a house that had a lot of woods around it. The first time I attempted to mow the back yard, I was repeatedly dive bombed by the male. They are pretty good size birds to. I certainly didn’t want to hurt him, but I needed to mow my grass. My neighbor had run in with him too. His solution was a water hose with a pistol grip pressure nozzle. It worked great!!! Every time woody dive bombed me, I sprayed him in the face. Eventually we reached a truce. I could mow the lawn, he watched me closely, but left me alone. Eventually their babies hatched and one by one, they flew away. Very cool birds and good parents. But definitely cranky.....used to chase away all the other birds, including a snooping hawk now and then.

Anyone know why one of these would be frantically flying from tree to tree pecking for about 10 seconds while constantly squawking? I saw one do that and couldn't figure out what was going on. It seemed like it was desperate to find food or something.
