This behavior is called drumming and woodpeckers everywhere do it. It is the woodpecker equivalent of singing and functions to establish and maintain territory and attract a mate. Normally, they use hollow trees, but metal is even better since the goal is to make as much noise as possible!

Funny ww2 story here: there was an allied base that heard "gunshots and shooting" at like 6am in the morning coming from the inside of the base by the vehicle bays. The entire base goes into high alert and is searching for the cause of this. After 3 hours, they find nothing yet the sounds still continue. Turns out woodpeckers, yes multiple, had gotten into the vehicle bay and were now pecking tanks and vents in the bays in a way that sounded like gunfire.

For those wondering, no, woodpeckers don't get concussions even after doing it on metal. The reason they don't isn't because the brain is protected by a cushion (contrary to popular belief) but by its tiny size and weight, based on a July 2022 study. Their brain is just too small for the shocks to have an impact. This study, which put tracking points on the head and beak through technology and watched in slow-motion, revealed that a woodpecker's head functions as just a hammer. "If you’re driving a nail with a hammer, you don’t want to put a pillow between the hammer and the nail.”, as a biomechanist put it. Woodpeckers also have a third eyelid (called the nictitating membrane), which close at the moment of every impact and guards it from wind, dust, and hazards from the wood.

That is a Northern Flicker, and we have had TWO of them stuck in our chimney! They drill and drill, liking the sound of the metal, but then one of them slipped down the vent on the chimney. We had to open the flue with a box under it and throw a towel over it and hustle it outside. This happened TWICE. The third time we heard that telltale rustling noise, we prepared ourselves for another flicker, but this time it was a HUGE black squirrel that ran all over the house with our cat chasing it! Finally we chased it back outside with a broom.

    I'll give you a few examples;
    (1) My house used to have a dark purple/brown trim. Ended up having woodpecker issues with that trim color. Painted the trim white this past year. No more woodpeckers.
    (2) Childhood neighbor. Their whole house was in cedar and painted in brown, and they had huge woodpeckers issues. The house was resided to blue and trim painted to white a few years back and no more woodpecker issues.
    (3) My current next door neighbor. His barn is painted a dark brown and every year he is outside moving a fake owls around to distract the woodpeckers that love his barn.
They like the dark brown colors. Likely because in their heads, it is a tree.

I'm pretty sure the question was answered in the 8 years that have passed, but:
    - Woodpeckers don't need wood to peck, despite what their names would tell you (har-har, I know)
    - They'll peck on most any surface, but they'll choose metal when trying to have a longer/larger reach. In short: it's communicating.
    - The one shown in this video is establishing to other woodpeckers that a) "I'm here" b) "I'M here, so don't try to claim my turf!" c) "I wouldn't mind if a partner would be interested in a tour of the place, uwu!"
    - Woodpeckers can peck at around 20 times per second, which is why, for humans, it sounds like you're in the middle of a warzone when they're around
    - Woodpeckers are cute as fuck
Well, there's my trivia for the day. Hope it proves interesting to someone.

For the past few days my daughter was bewildered at a noise coming from our sun room. The noise would begin around 5:30am. In our sun room is a wood stove. Today I filmed it hoping to capture the sound. I got lucky and not only recorded the drumming but also the song. I had guessed it was a woodpecker as ai have seen one perform this drumming on a neighbors metal chimney top across the street. Hopefully over the coming days I’ll capture the little bugger as viewed from outside drumming on my chimney.

Even out here in Phoenix, AZ, we have a similar woodpecker that loves to peck at our fireplace every morning about 7:30 AM! And, yes, it does sound like a jackhammer!! I go out there with a towel to "shoo" it away!

It's simple, he's tired of you playing that John Tesh album, and wants something with a beat.

He needs to crank up Buddy Rich doing a drum solo and see if they end up with a drum-off.

I am not an Ornithologist, I do spend a fair amount of time in the woods and what I have noticed is that smaller wood peckers just like this one seem to use this as a form of communication amongst their kind.. I hear them frequently in wooded areas doing just this, striking a trea and a pause, then I hear another and sometimes Ive heard up to three. Its possible that the metal is a louder form of communication. Im not sure I explained it real great but I hope this helps

Finally figured out this is what I was hearing! The sound is twice as loud inside the house, I was wondering if the neighbors were doing construction :)

This is also called a Yellow hammer woodpecker (Colaptes auratus). It is the state bird of Alabama. According to Wikipedia there are over 100 common names for this bird. I am amazed at how many times per second this thing can peck... Thanks for uploading this video.
