We have those in Crosby Texas. They love them pine trees. I walked out one morning and seen 5 of them chasing each other in circles up the trunk of a pine tree lol.

I've noticed one in my woodsy neighborhood, always fascinated me, then I started putting out bird feeders and suet cakes, every night I take everything in because of the bears but every morning very early I put everything back out and he comes flying over to the tree waiting for me to leave so we can get at that suet!

I've seen them several times down here in southeast Texas. They love the pine trees down here. Me and my grandma one spotted 5 of those suckers on the same tree once, they were at the base of the tree chasing each other in circles up the trunk. Although I haven't scene any in years since I moved to Houston they are massive and will kill your trees lol

Have one outside my house as we speak. MASSIVE 5-7” deep holes. Theyre called Pileated Woodpeckers. Amazing and rather rare.

Regarding rarity, as Will pointed out, they're not rare. You may be thinking of the Ivory-billed woodpecker, most likely extinct.

I loved watched the one that visited my mom's magnolia tree. Once the tree was downed via tornado the 'pecker disappeared, which was disappointing, but I think its descendants are still hanging out in the woods behind the property. I can occasionally hear their calls and drumming as well as glimpse one or two if I'm really lucky.

I just say one in my back yard, ( Tampa Florida) fascinating bird!!! We just purchased this house and we took out to rotten trees but we left the stumps. And that’s what he was working on … and calling for his mate.

I just heard one of these beauties outside. I ran to my back door to look and got a glimpse of one. It was a huge Pleated Woodpecker. Their bird song is like something out of a rainforest. I reach for my phone to get a picture and it wS gone that fast. I've only seen one a few times and always in the same tree 🌳

I remember when I got off the school bus one day there was this rapid dinging noise I heard. After about a minute of scanning the area and wondering, "What the actual fuck is that sound?", it turned out to be a woodpecker going ham (poultry?) on the swingset.

We have lots of them where I live, they’re pretty but very noisy and they’re nest robbers. I don’t hate them but not my favorite bird since I watched them taking all the baby robins that nested on my front porch one by one. 😢

Years ago back around 1994-5 my buddy and I were driving his old S10 pickup threw the trails on his family’s property at age 14-15 and as we came out of the woods I saw a very large bird I thought was a bald eagle intill we got closer and we had no idea this woodpecker was in Vermont but it must have been as big as this bird can get because it was larger then a bald eagle and we were blown away by it’s size and to this day I have only seen a few smaller pileated woodpeckers and it was fascinating to see.
I wonder how big they can get or if they ever stop growing and doubt I’ll ever seen one as large as the one we saw that day so many years ago.
