Im still riding a 2007 Fury that I bought new back in the day & its still a fantastic ride :) Done a few upgrades over the years as components wore out & the bike is better than ever & only weighs 28 lbs even with the triple chainset & original slightly heavy but working great Rockshox Tora 100/130 adjustable fork :). Its a keeper.
Wow same hear, similar year Fury but i have suntour 32mm forks black stanchions, i love my bike especially the rear stay opening for fitting a good fat tyre, have maxxis 2.4s on, I'm still on my beautiful truativ triple chainset😊 can't go wrong with a fury, mine now weighs double as i have a 1000w motor in the rear 🇬🇧👍
I’ve had this bike a while and for an entry model for me back into MTB after many years away from riding, this bike holds up very well! Even managed to make the tyres Tubeless even though it’s the none TR Trail Boss tyres it comes with. 2 CO2 cartridges and 50ml extra sealant per tyre covered any and all holes in the beading
Nice review Jon. Some good noises you were making going down those trails! Even more impressive that you managed to get all the details in whilst riding. Having owned one of these bikes for the last couple of months, it's good to know that someone with your experience rates it well. That was quite a surprise to hear you say the Deore groupset shifts as well as the XTR! Although I'd like to mention something. You've said a few times about the Sunrace cassette. I don't know if the one you tested had that, but the one on mine is a Deore cassette (CS-M4100 11-46). I would definitely say yes to this being the best value MTB though. Certainly in the UK. That's why I chose it myself. The other brands from Halfords like Boardman and Voodoo also offer good VFM, but I just feel this bike edges them in terms of spec. Notably, the dropper post, front thru-axle and outboard BB. At just under 6ft tall, 33 inch inside leg and riding a large frame myself, I kind of agree with you about the high top tube. I've not got massive clearance on standover height, but because of the dropper post, I've never felt it being a problem, and have plenty of room to move on steep descents. Like @John on a Bike who also owns this bike, I've had my teething problems. It's not perfect. I feel this relates more to the build quality rather than the components, so be prepared to check things after you buy one. Eg headset bearings lacking lube. Rear wheel bearings too tight. Fork damper lockout adjustment loose. Wheel alignment/trueness. I also have a slight wobble in the rear cassette, so the rear hub/freehub could be a weak point, though in practice it doesn't affect shifting. Something not mentioned, except on another post, is that the rear brake cable is possibly too long and could do with shortening. And, of course, my main bugbear with the bike, and something you mentioned in your written post Jon. The cable routing! It's just an extra factor in maintenance. Overall, it's a great bike, and I would buy it again. I've even named mine! I call it the Ruby Roller! PS Love your little graphic @ 0:22 😃
Hiya David! Thanks for that, glad you enjoyed the review, it was a lot of fun to make! Mine did have a SunRace cassette, so I assume they've made running changes - I'd rather have the Deore though. I'm always hugely impressed with Shimano's more affordable groupsets - apart from a few features or to lose weight, SLX 12-speed is about the highest you ever need ever go ;-) I'm guessing mine was also double-checked before it was sent out as a media bike because it didn't seem to suffer from the issues you mentioned - I guess making sure it's been given a thorough once over by the shop is very important!
For my basic needs this would be the natural progression from my Carrera Vengeance, which is getting old hat. Quite a good looking bike with the new frame design. It's a pity that I just won't spend anymore at my local Halfords due to issues with staff 🤔. Worth considering for the money it seems 👍
I'm looking at the cycle to work scheme... Looking at a Boardman mht 8.9.... but how does the fury compare??? I really wanted a cube acid but can't find one anywhere in stock 😢

@@kendawgmiyagi2138 I was looking at the Boardman mht 8.6 because the weight of the Carrera is 15kg whereas the Boardman is 13.5 so therefore I want to purchase that bike but I don’t know how much the weight will affect it ?
@@olliedickason3248 I'd say the fury has better brakes and tyres, and obviously a dropper as standard. Same fork 👍🏻 getting any bike just now is like gold dust so it's a bit of a compromise on what you can actually buy

@@kendawgmiyagi2138 Yeah I saw that but delivery knocks the price up. Do you have the thick or thin ones ? Also what bike did you put them on and do they stay solid on the bars and not move around ?
Hi Curt! We don't have a video for it but we've got a written review of the Carrera Titan X. Find that here - off.road.cc/content/review/bikes/carrera-titan-x-2021-review-7581 Cheers!
Hi, if you're just looking to ride jumps you may want to look for something that's more dedicated towards that but that's not to say that the Fury can't handle a jump or two. As for the head tube, this one isn't tapered.
Hi mate, do you know if the 2020 Fury has the basic HG hub/driver or the XD hub? I want to order cassette before I take old one off but Halfords won't tell me unless I leave bike with them and a charge. Halfords customer service is diabolical, never ever again will I buy a bike from them.
@@offroadcc Hi mate, thanks for your reply. A bike mechanic friend has confirmed today after taking the cassette off and checking that its definitely a sram cassette with a Shimano HG hub.
Yeah agree - I had the Carrera Virtuoso road bike for years and it was a brilliant bike. Cost me £220 new and I loved it and did a few partitive's on it and even came in first 5 on one sportive
I had a 2016 vengeance and threw a cheap rockshox air fork on it that I found on ebay, nobby nic tyres, mega cheap hydro brakes and an unbranded 760mm bar with short stem and it was absolutely brilliant. They have good frames, so a few smart upgrades really make them perform as good as "proper" bike brands. Was a great introduction to trail riding and very capable.
Yep, it has a 44mm internal diameter headtube which means you can stick an external cup on to use a 1.5" lower bearing. The frame might need reaming though, but a good bike shop can do that for you with the specialist tools needed.
@@justinn6865 Also the fork on the Nucleus VR is XCR while the fork on the Fury is Raidon, the fury also has a superior shimano deore drivetrain compared to the box four set on the VR, the shimano brake set on the fury is also superior to the Tektro set on the VR and on top of all that you got a dropper post like you said. This is insane value and I am surprised not more people are raving about this bike 🤷♂️ to be honest I am considering this bike over the Nucleus VRS version and a Voodoo Bizango that's how good the specs are on the Fury IMO
Where can you get a Merida Big Trail 500 for £650 in Australia? Is it on sale? I would be surprised given that the Big Trail 200 is selling for around this price and similarly specced to the Carrera Fury.
