The Big Band’s busy concert season marches on with this performance in late June. An unusual Tuesday evening performance, the band worked with Howard County Recreation & Parks to put on a concert as part of their Travelling Bands series. Using the Chrysalis as the venue for the program was a new and exciting adventure for HCP&R, as it was relatively newly built, and all parties involved enjoyed the chance to exercise Columbia’s newest venue and park!
Few highways capture the cultural imagination quite like U.S. Route 66. Though officially disestablished in 1985, the long road from Chicago to Los Angeles runs through history and media as the route to the west coast before the interstates and airlines. Boby Troup’s 1946 R&B hit originated on an archetypal cross-country trip, looking to try his hand as a songwriter in Hollywood; the song was composed on the road, and took on a life of its own - many recordings have achieved major sales success, and some performers change the lyrics to reflect different towns and cities as they grow and shrink over time, though none are included in this instrumental chart.
