    Hearts? Never heard of it. Now I think you are just making up games. Kidding of course. Good memory of a job, that doesn't have too many fond memories, where we all played hearts at the end of the lunch hour. That Salacious sweatshirt is amazing!

    The really interesting thing to me about Hearts is that, when played competitively, it is kind of a semi-cooperative game. There is always a tension where you are out to get the person with the least points and that often requires coordination between players. But then you can't completely rely on your "teammates" to back you when they themselves might have to eat a bunch of points, so you never quite know what the right play is in any given situation. That is, IMO, a most delicious tension. When I've played with casual players, the game loses that tension and I don't enjoy it as much.

      Ahhhhh, you're soooo right Corey! That semi-coop feeling of people trying to stick the winner has such a rad tension. I really do think the can morphs amazingly well at every point in the game. Soo much tension! I can totally see your point about experience levels, as some Hearts sharks can just mop the floor haha

    We always play with the ten of diamonds, not the jack of diamonds, being plus ten. Teasing this card out in a trick is fun plot line of the game.

    Hearts is an absolute classic! There are rules for X50 bonuses, points on first trick, J♦️, and a few others. Though I play more *traditional* (Microsoft windows version). Hearts on Trickster has been a wonderful way to scratch the hearts itch, and was my intro into TTs.

    • @ClaudeAndTaylor
      @ClaudeAndTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I've yet to hear about the X50 bonuses! Thanks for the heads-up and I think I need to go try all these for next video😁🙌 That PC version really was insanely impactful for Hearts and trick-taking as a whole! I love that Hearts was an intro for so many other people, because it really caught me up also! Thanks so much for the awesome comment, Dewey!!

    Thanks for the video! For me, it was Euchre. Now I love Pitch for all the reasons you love Hearts. Unfortunately Euchre and I just grew apart. Lol

      Of course, Mark!! Thanks for the comment!! And yeah I totally want to look into Pitch now! I recently got Pitch Six, so we'll see how that goes haha! Sad days for Euchre 🥲

    Hearts was definitely my first trick taker, playing on our PC before I even knew what trick taking was. I also didn't know the shoot the moon rule for the longest time until an AI hit my with it and I was like "what the eff just happened?"

    Loving your channel. I've never played that you can play points on the first trick. Super rude. I know some people play with the variant where you can remove 26 points from your score rather than give 26 points to everyone else. Those are the only two variants to the classic game I know of. I have Royal Hearts which was put out by Parker Brothers/Hasbro. I also have Black Spy by Alan Moon which I've yet to play but really am looking forward to it. Vampyre Hearts is another one I have and haven't played.

    • @ClaudeAndTaylor
      @ClaudeAndTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So rude, right?! But thanks so much for the kind words, Ryan!! 😁🙌 I'm interested in all those variants, and you've kinda called all of the future videos this month, great eye for Hearts variants!!! 👏👏👏I'm hoping to cover all of these 🤩

    If the Queen of Spades is 13 points, then you're technically not playing Hearts, you're playing Black Lady. Hearts just uses the hearts as penalty cards. Though nowadays, most people call Black Lady Hearts too.

    • @ClaudeAndTaylor
      @ClaudeAndTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey JorWat, it's wild how many Hearts variants there are out there for sure! I'm hoping to cover most of them next video! It looks like this edition of Hearts is what's most commonly played, from what I can tell, but who knows haha!

    • @JorWat25
      @JorWat25 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ClaudeAndTaylor As far as I can tell, 'original' Hearts is very rarely played nowadays, so the label has shifted over to what was known as 'Black Lady'. The bible of card games, Parlett's _The Penguin Book of Card Games,_ has these exact rules for Hearts ("the following four-player game contains probably the best balance of common features and may reasonably be regarded as standard"), with only a vague mention of the 'original'. Though it does list a lot of other variants...
      EDIT: Have checked the book again, and variants include:
      * Partnership Hearts: Pair up with other players, like in Bridge
      * Hearts for 3, 5-7, or 2
      * Auction Hearts: Bid for which suit is the penalty suit
      * Black Maria: King and Ace of Spaces are also penalties
      * Domino Hearts: "One of the most interesting variants". Start with six cards each, and if you can't follow suit, draw until you can (if deck empty, play as normal). Keep going until only one player has cards, which all count as that player's won cards.
      Then it goes into other games in the Hearts family (that is, games where you have penalty cards), like Barbu, Tëtka, Reversis, Schieberamsch, Bassadewitz and Coteccio.

    Not sure if you've covered this on the channel before, but what's your general take on perfect information in trick-taking games versus having some cards either hidden or not dealt?

    • @ClaudeAndTaylor
      @ClaudeAndTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Steven, great question! I was actually going to link a recent BGG thread on this from the BGG trick-taking guild, but that looks to have been posted by you so I'll just reply with my reply from there just it case it wasn't you haha: Lovely question! The only time i dislike perfect is at 2. Every other time is great. I prefer just a taaad cut out as a preference to keep things spicy. Like 1 card out is my jam

    Great video, any chance you could cover 'David & Goliath'? It is often likened to Hearts 'with a twist'. It is a trick taker from 1997, though the Pegasus version (with the mice) from 2008 and the 2010 Chinese version had the best art by far.

      @ClaudeAndTaylor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much for the kind words, Patrick!! 😁🙌 I've played David & Goliath a couple of times and really enjoyed it! Perfectly tight and tense. I'm hoping to play more and cover it down the line as part of a 'Classics month. My copy is the shrinking guy art with the tiny clothes haha.
      Thanks again for the awesome comment!
