I think hands down the best bl manga to ease someone into the genre is Our Dining Table! It’s only one volume, super wholesome, with great art and just rly cute! Another good one that’s just wholesome and cute is Restart After Coming Back Home and it’s sequel, Restart After Growing Hungry. For stuff that’s a little bit more dramatic/intense, I feel like Given is a good place to start!

Have you read Wild Seed by Octavia E Butler? It’s a really great character driven fantasy, where she really made the two main characters complex and you were able to sympathise with their bad choices as well. It’s part of a series and while I still liked the rest of the series, Wild Seed is so superior to the other books and can be read as a stand-alone.
I think you’re right in that the friends to lovers trope works best in queer fiction.
It’s so sweet to hear you spreading the love of reading to your students 🥰

I was shooketh when I first saw the ABO trope ouside of ff. I suddenly started stumbling upon it on manga sites and it took a while to get used to. Some of the works are... a lot. I've been on a path to find the good ones though and I've read some gems. It's a sport I guess. Find the diamond in the pile of shite, like when you browse AO3.

I desperately need everything to start having tags like AO3 like if they're gonna start using tropes from FF gotta start using tags too!!

In a Garden Burning Gold is dull AF. I couldn't get passed the first couple chapters. It seems every time you decide to pick up a fantasy book, you always choose the most generic, YA-y, flavor-of-the-moment stuff too lol. I don't think high/historical fantasy would appeal to you anyway, even at its best, since you don't like the names and words and whatnot, but every fantasy book you pick up I tend to dislike and I like the genre as a whole. You have such terrible luck lol

I feel like it's because the really high fantasy action-packed journey or war fantasy really doesn't interest me loll so I always avoid those and try to go for the character driven or world driven fantasies and they're always just boring 😂
