  • Avernus is the first of the Nine Hells, it is the surface of a blasted, infernal world of nightmarish landscapes, magma lakes, volcanic chasms and vast, dark fortress cities. In this video, I'll provide you with a basic tour of the plane and what the environment is like, what sort of things you might encounter there, and some background on the society that makes it's home there.

@@triratna1397 Bruh could u ellaborate? I myself am not fond of mary sues, but Zariel is a well-developed character with a complicated backstory. She was an angel who could not turn a blind eye to the suffering of mortals due to the blood war, but when she tried to reason with other angels to end it, they just kept being jerks. So she gathered an army of mortals and descended into Avernus to battle devils and demons, but mortals grew scared of death and fleed the battlefield. Zariel was captured by Asmodeus who struck a deal with her. She agreed to serve him in exchange for being able to fight demons. Like she literally sacrificed her own angelic form for the cause. Plus in Descend into Avernus it is possible to redeem her, so at the core of her heart she aint evil and just wants to end the bloodshed. Idk why u think she is an SJW, cuz if it is just because she is a female and a general then u r literally being sexist. They are celestial beings after all, they can do whatever they want and be whoever they want

My Devils actually take the opposite approach. They will fight to the death in Hell but are quick to retreat and regroup everywhere else in the multiverse. Why? Because death in Baator means extinction and nonexistence for devils, but death anywhere else means demotion, and we all know which, for devils, is the greatest fear for devils.

AD&D2e " Planescape" campaign setting box set, and the suppliment ," Castles & Dungeons " had a game set on Avernus with the River of Maggots at the base of a steep cliff and castle.
The were off hand remarks here and there,in a few booklets that there were Druids that got stranded on Avernus and
" Nature Bonded " to the land. Druids are Spiritual Wardens of the Land/ Earth.( World) so the nature priests just embrace a new land to bond with.
Erinyes in pre 4e ran from fights and behave more as Rogues. Now they are warriors ? !
Well, I always gave monsters class levels when I can. I am still sticking with 3.5e
AD&D2e " Tome of Magic," had a 9th-level spell called " Estate Transfer."
spell effect: Place stone markers surrounding an area of land/ building with a radius of a hundred feet.
From the plane you want to move the area site to. At the end of casting the land of two different planes switch places. This effect was permanent .
Wizard towers and cleric temples could/ can be move " Once," with this spell.
Lich posing as false gods would trick their worshipers/ followers into Baator this way.
In AD&D " Planescape" setting and 3e " Manual of the Planes," lawful evil gods had their Domains within Avernus.
Have a good Thanks Giving weekend.
Thank you for the down loads.

Pit fiend description: a hulking 12-foot-tall (3.7 meters) humanoid form that weighed 800 pounds (360 kilograms).[3][7]
Their bodies were armored with scales and were quickly inflamed in
response to their rage or excitement. A pair of massive, bat-like wings
gave pit fiends a gargoylish appearance and they often wrapped their
wings around their fearsome, red figures. Their huge fangs dripped with
hissing, green venom and their prehensile tails could be cracked like
    whips.
Female pit fiend description: Red colored semi clothed Supermodel with horns.

So I had a question, well more curious on your opinion would Bel or Zariel be a descent fiend patron for a warlock? also I was thinking about making a Hexblade lock, but rather than make it a weapon from the shadowfell, make it a fiendish weapon. specifically a devil that was forced into, or polymorphed into a weapon. I was thinking about making it fanatically loyal to either Bel or Zariel and what ever souls you take when you kill with it, goes to them to empower them. the weapon is a conduit of power to both the wielder and say Zariel, which she uses to maintain her power over Bel. Is that something that should just be saved for a pact of the blade or would it work with a Hexblade?

How do you visualize these lower planes in terms of its overall structure? At the beginning, you show the slide of Avernus being a planet. Are the other layers below the surface or are they other planets all connected by the River Styx somehow? What makes it a plane and not a prime material world? I'm not up on 4e cosmology. I remember those planes were a bit ambiguous as to their structure back in 2e Planescape.

I hate it when I have a D.M. who wants to run a campaign in a part of the 9 hell's and makes it so t that you can go there instantly. I mean to each zone but part of the fun in my opinion of playing a campaign set in the lower planes is that you can't plane shift from point A to point B .Of course usually step 1 Is usually Avernus. I mean if hell were that easy to get in and out of what kind of prison is it?

I have been using Erinyes as fallen upper planar creatures that, through one compromise through another, became evil beings (fallen) since the 80s. They are essentially like old corrupt people with power who drifted from their ideals to get the job done and turned into the very monsters they fought while being a perverse version of who they once were. Is it cool I still use them that way? When (if) I run another AD&D game, should I create a new extraplanar monster for this? I have plenty of origins should I need to.

Erinyes in AD&D2e and 3.5e, were 6HD LE Outsiders that can be summon by a 4th-level spell
" Lesser Planar binding/ Call Planar Ally." These are basic teenagers/ young adult of their race.
The 6th-level " Planar Binding " spell summons up to a 13HD outside, Erinyes 6HD+ 7 class levels.
Erinyes before 4th/ 5the were " none combatains " they were treated as Rogues.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+Rp Sketchbooks Yes, it was largely fleshed out in 4th edition, but the lore has been largely unchanged for 5th edition (simplified and less fluffy for the most part, but still based on the same established canon). I will be going into more detail on the Dawn War era when I start talking about Demons, it is certainly a big Monsterology episode as it deals with the Primordials, the origin of Gods and the origin of the Demons. Really, most things tie into the Dawn War in D&D.

    • @rpsketchbooks3931

+AJ Pickett (The Mighty Gluestick) ... that's right on, cool to hear. i don't personally know crap about the Lore from 4th edition, and really don't know much about the lore of 5th edition yet either. but i recognized several places on your map from 2nd edition Planescape. in the Well of the Worlds adventure/encounter supplement there's a great drawing by Tony DiTerlizzi of the Pillar of Skulls, but its not described (or drawn) with the gigantic proportions you describe. i'm not sure if the lore is the same in 4th edition but despite the name it was (is?) actually a cylindrical pile of living heads, "in various states of decay and decomposition." it also apparently went into the ground some distance "with half-buried heads still trying to talk, despite earth filling their mouths." (all quotes from pg 18.)

@@krispalermo8133 Taken in that context I guess that makes sense. I may not understand but that gives some perspective. Then I would suppose that so long as they reasonably follow the lawful rules while there they could remain. Plus if their chaotic antics get out of hand the Devils would be able to practice their fundamental natures in meting out punishments.

  • @moregasmthepowerful2959

Why do demons fight Devils, what is the fundamental difference?
I'm very new to D&D so I apologise if this question sounds foolish.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Way back in D&D time, the first beings kind of had to figure out the boundaries of law, chaos, good and evil, the division between law and chaos is the most fundamental to them, with good and evil coming in a close second. Originally, the forces of law who were fighting the forces of chaos for dominance in the D&D universe, ended up becoming evil, as the constant warfare twisted and changed them, and this became a problem, so, they basically got banished into a realm with many ways in, but few ways back out.. in a sneaky deal, those who were banished arranged a system where they would punish those mortals who broke divine laws, and in compensation for this, they would be able to use the energy of those souls to give them the divine power to reshape reality to a limited extent.. because they needed that power to continue to keep the forces of chaos in check.. what the gods did not factor in, was that these devils were using the war against chaos, with the demons, as a means to an end.. they then did everything they could to convince mortals to break divine laws and condemn themselves to the custody of the devils for punishment, providing the devils with more and more divine power, and the devils have continued the war against the demons, known as the blood war, in perpetuity, because a decisive victory by them would end the contract with the gods and free mortal souls from their custody, and a decisive victory by the demons would tear the universe apart and return it to a state of elemental chaos.

    • @briancorvello3620

What AJ means is, Law versus Chaos.
It's a war of ideals to decide which "type" of Evil is better.

That's right, the biggest conflict in creation has a rather simple cause.

Moregasm the Powerful Canonically, it stems from Asmodeus stealing a shard from the Seed of Evil at the very center of the Abyss and used it to forge the Ruby Rod of Asmodeus. Demons fight to retrieve the seed shard. Of course, the Devils were celestial warriors who fought the Demons, but had become warped and corrupted by the Demons, so there's that, too.
