  • Baator, also known as the Nine-Hells, home of the most powerful of all infernals, Asmodeus. In this first video of a new Infernals series, we take a look at the murky origin story of this incredibly ancient immortal being and the creation of the Nine Hells.

    "Did you ever hear of the tragedy of Asmodeus the fallen? I thought not, it's not a story your gods would tell you. It's a myth of creation.
    Asmodeus once known as Ahriman was an upholder of order, so knowledgeable and so powerful he could influence the chaotic void to create law
    He had such a knowledge of law that he could even keep at bay the demon hordes. Unfortunately he couldn't convince the gods to decide upon the center of creation and without their uplifting wings he fell into the lowest pits of the hells.
    Ironic he could uphold the law, but not himself"

      I am playing a character (drow fighter 1/divine soul sorcerer) that is dedicated to Asmodeus, basically made a deal with the devil to get away from Lolth, because in his mind the only way to get away from a greater deity is through a pact with an even greater deity... as always Asmodeus got the better end of the deal by a nautical mile (but I got access to both divine and sorcerer spells so that's something)
      Actually was the longest backstory I ever created, mostly because I wanted to assure the DM that I wasn't playing a Judas character despite being lawful evil so I gave my character plenty of reasons to adventure and stick with a good aligned party. But also if I'm going to create a character with a built in deal with the devil you know I'm going to give the DM plenty of ammo.

    I always liked the perception that each layer was its own seperate infinite plane of existance. Linked to each other but independent.
    The planes / layers really made it other worldly. Turning outer realms into "planets" makes them just..........less, just my personal opinion.

    • @bigmonkey1254
      @bigmonkey1254 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, from reading the book, I think the idea of each layer being its own little infinity makes sense. Especially considering that each plane is not a world of the multiverse but an aspect of existence which underlies reality. Meaning that each plane must be infinite because each universe within the multiverse is infinite.

    I'm playing a Blood Hunter whose Patron is Asmodeus (in the setting of Faerun playing Hoard of the Dragon Queen). In our last episode we encountered a mission in Baldur's Gate and have had to pass through a few trials. In my trial of Face Your Fears, I released that part of me that was an Aspect of Asmodeus, and then in the final trial Face Yourself, I was dragged down to the Nine Hells because Asmodeus demanded and audience and sent his daughter to escort me to him. Thus far it is a highly enriched adventure that is adding to the 10 wait until the Cult of the Dragon Queen comes through town. Looking forward to seeing what comes of this meeting. Asmodeus has plans for this Blood Hunter and it probably has to do with the downfall of Tiamat.

    One of my evil gods has his worshippers join him in an outer planer afterlife. I've been moving around where it actually was for decades. When you go into that afterlife, you are granted your every desire... for all eternity. At first, it seems awesome. That fades quickly. That very thing drives you mad and you eventually twist your afterlife into a Clive Barker - Lovecraft inspired hell to break the madness of the monotony, choosing to suffer and going mad in the process. Time there is also a bit different. If you look into a scrying pool there and check out the Prime Material plane, it almost seems to stand still. So, if your friend goes there for an hour and comes back, chances are he is completely mad and desensitized to all sensations, especially pleasure. I kept placing it in Hades, but (because of both the order and the madness), I also went from the Nine Hells to the Abyss. To outside observers in those planes, the soul looks like it is in its own world within a "snowglobe" that is around 6' diameter. That soul is not actually interacting with anyone, it is literally in its own world. The evil god's minions are more like a warden, guards and maintenance workers. That god's outer plane demi-plane is finite, but it grows bigger as it gets more globes. Any suggestions where I put such a plane? The demi-outer-plane itself is actually quite orderly and the workers love looking into the globes to see how the inmates' lives are going.

  • @Nyrufa
    @Nyrufa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Do demons / devils created from souls remember who they used to be, or are they just made from shredded soul energy? Seems to me like fighting the forces of evil isn't something that can be done through brute force. If every time you kill a servant of evil, they just go onto become a creature of the lower planes with potentially even more power than they had in life!

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Destroying a devil or demon on it's home plane/dimension does permanently kill it, and demons often eat the souls of petitioners who end up in the abyss. Devils are loath to destroy souls as they need them to power their divine morphology (the ability to manipulate reality), so they often just bust a soul down to lemure status, in which case it does forget it's former life. Demons have a more chaotic origin, Dretches and Chasmes may retain knowledge of who they were, or they may not.. in many ways they may find refuge in insanity and amnesia..it would be a mercy. Demons can spontaneously generate from soul energy, so, as you say, shredded souls that get snared in the chaotic sludge of the abyss.

    two things --
    one, really interesting to think about or visualize the nine hells as a planetary sphere, while at the same time knowing each region is an infinitely large plane. cool stuff there. those mental/spatial paradoxes are always intriguing. (as you were talking about the winding paths that lead deeper into the core i flashed on half-memories, half-inventions of sumptuous "normal-seeming" palatial rooms -- libraries, dining halls, each with windows looking out on the exploding torturous fire-drenched landscape, such as we see in certain episodes of the X-Files where Mulder and the Smoking Man discuss the end of the world inside a little bubble of calm ... end of the 4th season, i think.)
    two, its really hard for me at times to wrap my head around the concept of time in these D&D cosmologies. on the one hand i too want to imagine a multi-verse which is at least millions of years old, yet certain timelines, such as that of the Blood War, and the known History of Sigil, seem to only be 10,000 years old or not much older. while the exact beginning of the Blood War is left vague, many of the pivotal moments in it seem to be quite recent. while it could be argued that "mortals" can only trace the most recent parts of the Blood War ... somehow that explanation doesn't completely satisfy me. in a multiverse of magic, and which includes the meticulous record keeping of the inhabitants of Mechanus as just one example, it seems like far deeper and broader histories could be painted.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Rp Sketchbooks In the old editions the planes of hell are infinite, in the current edition I use the world more like Plain.. the caverns are enormous, continent size, but they are not infinite.
      As for the time scale... yeah, the Blood war has been waging for BILLIONS of years.. this means that when you encounter a devil, you are looking into the eyes of a being which has existed for probably hundreds of thousands of years, but to stand in the presence of Asmodeus, is to stand before a being that is millions and millions of years old, who had a part in the creation of the Human species.. which for him was something that happened not so long ago, such that Humans are still something that fascinates him, like a new toy. Demons and Devils have been ripping the crap out of each other since the demons first rampaged across the millions of prime material planes, the trillions of galaxies and the many outer planes, the devils have been at war with them for far longer than any or the mortal races can truly fathom. So, when a mortal actually manages to beat a devil in a game of wits, or actually destroy a demon.. it is quite an accomplishment!

    • @rpsketchbooks3931
      @rpsketchbooks3931 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AJ Pickett (The Mighty Gluestick) .... wouldn't the Nine Hells need a bit of infinity to house all those souls? even if you pack 'em in like sardines ... its not just the souls from the last couple thousand years or so that are roasting in those pits, its the souls from ... well, as you say, billions of planets across billions of years ...? and i assume its not just human souls being tortured, but souls from nearly any sentient species? or do souls get "used up" like gasoline?
      i need a Mechanus calculator just to think about this. %^/
      from your point of view, are devils and demons immortal -- or are new ones being created all the time?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Rp Sketchbooks They are not immune to destruction, but the energy of their spirit is usually recycled and they are reborn over and over again. However, they do get used up and can also be stored in gems and artifacts, or consumed in powerful spells that funnel the totality of the spirit's will into an act of creation (so, the life force of the creature becomes that which makes the continual alteration to reality). If you want to get all timey whimey wibbly wobbly, imagine that Baator is just one of millions of Baators and each has legions of devils and the damned.. and while there is an Asmodeus on each of them.. they are all ONE Asmodeus. This is the difference between a god, and lesser beings.

    I really like your series. Devils, demons and Yugoloths !
    In my campaign world, there was the Nalchurs (league of chaos gods who destroyed worlds for the fun of it)
    They set to destroy the brand new world the god created (very like Ptolus campaign setting by Monte Cook) and it was a trap, most of them were trapped.
    So... their servitors thought to refine themselves and they stripped away their lawful and chaos tendencies to be the pure evil beings. (Like in the background of some Planescape stuff).
    So the Devils went to have fun with their souls, a few of them were ancient Nalchurs.
    The rest of them, the masses of chaotic beings went to populate the abyss, 666 worlds that had been destroyed by the Nalchurs in the last millenias.
    Now the Nalchurs are coming back, their lackeys doing the work of opening their prison.
    Their catspaw are the giants, too blinded by pride to see that they are used. On the other side, it's the dragons who tries to protect the material plane and their hoards. Dragons are seen as saviors (even the chromatic ones) but when they will win, Dragon Overlords will be the subject of my next campaign. :)

    Why are there so many evil outsiders but hardly any good aligned ones?

    • @rpsketchbooks3931
      @rpsketchbooks3931 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +imlaughing2death interesting question. might have to think about what "evil" really means in this setting.
      in the work of Lovecraft at least creatures & entities "from beyond" or "outside" were not evil in the traditional sense -- they simply had motives completely outside the normal human sphere of awareness. and so what to humans seemed like outsiders perpetrating evil or indifference to human life was really something inexplicable. it might very well be that the outsiders were engaged in a "higher purpose" that benefited life on a galactic level, but destroyed life on a planetary level. but the humans in Lovecraft's fiction were never really able to comprehend what the outsiders were doing. the whole point generally was the actions of the outsiders were so completely alien there were no reference points for comparison or understanding.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +imlaughing2death Its just that we don't often see them listed as monsters, because they don't come into contention with mortals overly much. There are trillions of good aligned outsiders! The gods who are in a constant act of creation are expanding and enriching the multiverse with new prime material worlds, new species, new ecologies and so forth, so if you can imagine that one of the primary requirements of being a god is to be able to exist in more than one dimension at the same time. The good aligned outsiders are, in many ways, more like living stories, or legendary souls, they are larger than life and embody the philosophy/alignment/expression of their realm. If you encounter a Dwarf that is native to Acheron, and a Dwarf that is native to Ysgard, they are VERY different to each other, because the environment they come from shapes the mind, as much as it shapes the body.. the Beastlands are full of sentient animals, Mechanus is full of sentient insects, Pandemonium has huge numbers of burrowing sentient worms, Bytopia is full of Gnomes, Spriggans, Sprites and Halflings, etc, etc. So, in short, there are vast and varied numbers and types of all alignments of outsiders, but the literature concentrates far more on the bad guys.

      +trenton maloney Aside from the environment itself, and the mortal souls in the process of becoming devils, the actual devils themselves would be more interested in capturing a mortal being alive.. because mortals provide them with the energy they need to perform acts of creation, and they crave it!
      So, sure, a character might get a little bit torn up, and if they fall into a flesh pit they are mince meat... but most of the true devils will, once they notice the character is not another condemned soul, do everything in their power to capture them alive, and from there, the real fun begins.. because they need to make very sure the mortal is, or becomes a damned soul.. once that happens, they have legal ownership and they can instantly execute the mortal and the soul is not going to go anywhere... it is now the property of hell.

      +trenton maloney In my campaign (Rise of Tiamat), the PC's have been forced to visit baator (via Sigil) to obtain help from Bel. This allows me to show the players not only the Forgotten Realms but the planescape setting as well, and also adds a layer of complexity to the Story: the in-fighting of the devils, Bel trying to get back Avernus, and having Tiamat plan's foiled...
      Also, the players are being led there by a Tiefling PC who is in the story by request of Bel (sent to Faerun in order to help his agenda), and trying to corrupt the paladin of the party as well... Lots of fun to have here!

    Apologies, I'm slightly confused. During the Story of Asmodeus, you mentioned that he was one of 2 serpentine creatures, but shortly after you stated that the returned to the Celestial plane changed (corrupted) after having battled the demons (From 4:00 - 7:00). Can you please clarify? Was he a giant serpent or was he a corrupted celestial after years of battling demons?

      Its just one version of the many tales of the origin of the plane, anyway, I seem to have no issue delineating between religion/spirituality and make believe stories from games.. it perplexes me why some folks have troubles with this relatively straight forward distinction.
      Its almost as if both topics deal with make believe stories and this threatens them somehow.
      Go figure.

      Maybe it has to do with the usage of established names like Asmodeus, Lucifer and Mephistophiles. No one bats an eye when it's something intended as fiction, like Cthulhu or the Discworld pantheon. Note to self: see how long I can get away with having FSM as my character's deity.

    In my games, 99.9% of all D&D lore are just lies spun by Asmodeus to obscure the truth of his origins. Even most of the gods and goddesses are nothing more than lies crafted by Asmodeus, as ways for him to channel more and more power into himself, as he wages his endless war against AO and the high heavens.

    It's not really "religious persecution" when parents disallow their children to engage in wish fulfillment that violates their deepest beliefs. I'm certain that if you had children there are some games that you would frown upon them engaging in, ie., rape wish fulfillment, racial bigotry, burning homosexuals alive, etc.
    There's a reason that games are fun and it's because it allows you to do things that you can't do in reality, such as being a hero that kills monsters...but sure, D&D voluntarily changing their product from an _intentional_ insult to Judaeo-Christian beliefs because they wanted it to sell to people who would have otherwise rejected it is "persecution."

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    • @LeviPaladin
      @LeviPaladin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Memetic Entity Subversion isn't the same thing as "borrowing ideas."
      Also, is there anything that is sacrosanct to you besides self? Would you be insulted if I dismissed it as "folklore?" ...but that's your intention, isn't it?

    • @LeviPaladin
      @LeviPaladin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Memetic Entity I refer you to my initial comment.

    • @LeviPaladin
      @LeviPaladin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Memetic Entity It's like you didn't read my last comment.

    • @LeviPaladin
      @LeviPaladin 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Memetic Entity You missed the point of my initial comment. The point is not about the fact that D&D is offensive, it's about the fact that it's not suffering "religious persecution." I'm not sure if you're trolling by continually trying to force me to prove intent. I concede that I can't move through your arbitrary goal posts, but it's self-evident...which is why I gave you a self-evident example hoping that you would understand.
      When you make up a story about something that someone holds dear that subverts and reverses the meaning, it's insulting. I cannot prove intent, but I can point out that if you fire a weapon in someone's general direction with knowledge that they're there and you hit, in all likelihood your intention was to do harm.
      I didn't take offense, that's another strawman, nor will I tell you what can be taken as offense, only that some people don't want their children to be indoctrinated against their deeply held beliefs, so they won't let their children engage in it...
      As an aside, it's funny how when people complain about how much this culture appeals to everything that is traditionally held as evil for the last 3000 or so years (even by pagans) and that it's bad for children, they always say "don't let them watch, be good parents" but as soon as parents tell their kids not to do something, it's "religious persecution."
      So, in case you're not getting my point, *no* I'm not compiling a list of everything that D&D has taken out of Christianity and subverted.

  • @kevinchristiansen4348
    @kevinchristiansen4348 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    you have to remember I think Christian's are hypocrites and I hate associating with them.. I like associating with this stuff more fun.. fact is you have to get tougher as you get older and that's why I like this. asmodai is one tough s.o.b. he bleeds but no one can rule the cosmos but him. absolute confidence.

    • @zacharygadzinski3147
      @zacharygadzinski3147 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not all Christians are hypocrites. The hypocrites are fakers or what I call CINOs, Christians in name only. The way I see it people have freewill. I can share my faith and pray for someone's salvation and try to help those in need, but it's up to the person themself to accept salvation. Forcing it on others is morally wrong.
      Besides, this lore interests me. Despite my Christian faith I do love learning about mythology and lore. Also, with some fleshing out in future adaptations they could make a monotheastic religion around the god with no name and base it off of Christianity with a three in one godhead that make up one deity. Also Asmodeus seems to be more or less Lucifer/Satan of the D&D universe and was possibly loosely based off the devil.
