Camera doesn’t matter, but it does. Not because any camera can make better photos than another, but because some cameras are more fun to use, more enjoyable, and that in turn will make you use it more, take more photos, get more practice, and hopefully become a better photographer. That’s Leica for me. In that sense, a camera *can* and *will* make you a better photographer. All other cameras I’ve had ended up on the shelf eventually. But not the Leica. I just want to shoot it on and on.

Exactly. If you shoot what you enjoy, you'll be inspired more. Furthermore, no one is shooting sports or wildlife with an iPhone.

I've had exactly the same conversation as a musician about expensive instruments and I feel like it applies to any type of creativity. A chord on a cheap Chinese guitar sounds the same as one from a vintage Gibson to 98% of the audience. A whole set played on a guitar that inspires you to play your guts out will be night and day to one played on an instrument that's perpetually "good enough for now".

One thing I have to give Leica credit for is the kind of support you cannot get with any other film camera manufacturer these days. I had a co-worker of mine email Leica about his M2 which was built in the 60s, and they still could come back to him with some info about that specific camera. Any other manufacturer these days just wouldn't know who to ask anymore.

Leica has a feel to it like no other camera. I sold my 240 for the X1D thinking medium format was where it’s at for me in the end. It just wasn’t as inspiring as the Leica, or the Leica Summicrons I had. X1D is gone and the Leica is back. Couldn’t be happier.

I bought an m6 last year and it is a great camera to use, it feels good in hand, functions well and once you get used to range finder style photography it’s so good. Zone focusing is the way for sure and for street it’s great. If you shoot 50mm the m3 is awesome. Also have u tried an xpan? For me that’s my favourite 35mm because there is nothing like it really and it works so good.

Well, I recently picked up my first Leica - a IIIb with an f2 50mm Summitar lens (both from 1939). I learned to shoot on a Minolta rangefinder, so for me, shooting with rangefinders is like coming home. The first time, I picked up an SLR was only a few years ago in fact, and while I love shooting with some SLRs, I'll always keep coming back to the rangefinders. Will I ever get an M5,6 or 7? Perhaps, but I don't feel like I need to any time soon. I have enough cameras already to last me a lifetime - except maybe I need a Mamiya 6 or one of the Fuji medium format rangefinders.

Over the decades, I used the following rangefinders:
    Argus C-3 35mm
    Canonet QL17 G-III 35mm
    Minolta Hi-Matic 9 35mm
    Contax G1 35mm
    Leica M6 35mm rangefinder
    Fuji 6x7cm medium format rangefinder
    Fuji 6x9cm medium format rangefinder
The M6 was my first Leica rangefinder. However, it was not my first Leica. My first Leica was an M1 that I used on a microscope when I was in college. It looked like a rangefinder camera but it did not have the rangefinder focusing feature.

I've been anti Leica forever since the over enthusiastic users are annoying, but I've got to admit I'm coming around. I'd love to try a M6. Recently got a CL though and I'm fairly sure the size and weight is better for me (although it does feel a little cheaper.. cause it is). Anyway, I don't think we need to be apologetic about using nice gear or changing our minds about it!

    • @thomasaushauser1940
      @thomasaushauser1940 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You can be an anti-Leica photographer and still shoot with an M. I know people whose first step is to tape over all the Leica lettering on their cameras. It doesn't help, you can still recognise them. I myself find all this fuss about the M awful too; I also find the M too heavy and unergonomic. But I like the camera itself. I could shoot a film every day. I don't even know what else to take pictures of.

My problem with Leica isn't with the bodies...it's the cost of the lenses! I've shot with an M4, an M5 & and M6, but always with Zeiss lenses which are less expensive than Leica. They have a different look than the Leica lenses, but they're tack sharp, have great contrast and color. One thing about rangefinder cameras you definitely won't like is the minimum focus distance is normally not near as good as an SLR or mirrorless lens. Leica rangefinders are great for street photography or even event photography but I'm not sure I'd shoot much else with them. Like wine or beer, Leica cameras are an acquired taste.

Had to let go of the SLR control freak that I am, but it just feels fun to shoot a rangefinder. I take it all less serious and just have fun shooting. The results are/can be the same quality, it's just that the shooting process is different. And I welcome different. 😁

I think that gear does matter. As long as you feel good with using a camera that satisfy your needs. I like using a Nikon f-301, I tried a Leica and I loved it, I want to use a Leica as a camera for mine. I also have a digital Canon, but I don't enjoy shooting with that because, I feel like there is a separation between that Canon and me, I feel like that using a more simpler camera and that uses film it make me enjoy using the camera. With a digital it feel not natural. It's cost effective, but DAMN, film is so much regarding.

hey - i see your videos occasionally. I used to shoot a hasselblad 500C. I still have a 23CII and a full darkroom, but I discovered digital recently. I shoot with an R5 right now, it's fantastic, likely the first camera I feel has significant advantages versus film, especially 35mm, but shooting leica; the one 35mm brand that _maybe_ has something worth shooting at this juncture, IMHO. The Mamiya rangefinders are super interesting... honestly, your RZ body has had me just lusting over medium format again... but this is a nice choice as well... I respect your camera choices f'real.
I am slowly building an ultra-large bellows camera - i wanna build a lens, but i am thinking 4' image circle, so prolly just a pinhole...
I felt like everyone abandoned film by 2016 when i finally bought a digital... I guess it's boutique now, but only super recently were digital cameras even worth owning unless you were holding a Hasselblad - oh geeze, I never shot with it, but the '39 megapixel' CCD they announced back in 04; i think 13x3 + multi-exposure/pixel shift - i wanted to check that out, CCDs are interesting; i want a pentax 645Z for stills at this point. You get nice colors bro - who does your processing... _do you? color is hard to process without a shop because of just the quantity of chemistry..._ i mean, you need to spend a shit ton to get a digital body that can offer the tonality alone that film offers...i have almost always shot almost exclusively B&W and processe(ed) myself... I think i have a couple ilford 400 rolls left... but i rarely shot medium format in color - it's interesting to see your results.
    you get nice results.
    I'm super local, btw.

I think it is. At the end of the day the m6 ain’t making the photos it’s the person behind the camera and obviously how good your lens it. Film cameras have no censor, the film itself is the censor which makes the color. So if you put on a leica lens on another film camera with the same film you basically get the same photo. Digital is a bit different with the sensor
