That was such a happy 40k ending. Everybody got what they wanted, the dark Eldar get their challenge, the little girl gets to feed her friend delicious dark Eldar souls and the captain escaped with what appears to be his entire named crew compliment. Win, win, win.
My thoughts exactly! All the main characters survived and hopefully the little girl or the Eldar get wiped out in their meeting. A win for the Imperium!
I am complete agreement with you! While the first novel I read was Eisenhorn, I did read the old gritty truly grimdark stories & novels. I love the big narratives, but in such a massive universe there is plenty of room for these independent stories especially about the little guy or some small Rogue Trader it doesn't all need to be galaxy shattering plots. Your channel has been so great at bringing these dusty old stories to life so thank you!
This story is an excellent example of why I prefer the old stuff when 40k was simply setting rather than a grimdark version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
@@alastor8091I think you make a good point, but I enjoyed it, theres alot of subtly. You can only get so much out of primarks, and space marines stories.
@@forestjohnson7474 I already knew exactly where the story was going when the little girl showed up. I think 40k is at its best when there's at least a smattering of Space Marine mixed in with lesser human forces and xenos. Warp stories are cool, but only when the story is distinctly not a big scary monster and more Event Horizon with the happening.
100% this. One off story that build up 40k universe without boggling it down with unnecessary characters and plots. As for DE at the end, its wery cool as it makes you understand that there is only war and the laughter of thirsting Gods.
There is something so captivating about the misery of the old 40k stories. The stories of people hopelessly fleeing from the terrors of the warp which they themselves brought aboard is just great.
Fantastic. Really enjoyed the story, and have always very much enjoyed how you occasionally leave in a little chuckle or comment or struggled through pronunciation during the read. Thanks for all your work.
The one off stories always worked really well for me because they feel like expansions of the little micro-narratives you would find in the "flavor text" in the codices and/or the similar things in the Dark Heresy books. Very cool story, I dig the ending just because it's emphasizing just how mundane this whole story is in the context of the wider setting, like what happens is brutal and horrible and confusing and and and, but at the end of the day, it's just a thing that happens, and the dark eldar showing up speaks to this stories place in the wider lore, but really being it's own stand alone thing as well. But no, it's not essential I guess, just cool flavor.
Loved it. Great narration I liked how the captains love for his lost daughter left his ship in ruin. And the predatory nature of the dark eldar will lead to her own destruction.
Ya, you just want a ballance. Some big connected stories, and some of these nice little shorts that just show brief moments or short stories that don't need to go long. Everyone can die, the isolated people can meat their doom, no further info is provided, and it doesn't need to be part of something bigger. You can get some stories in this type you can't in the other. And what you and I and most others probably like... is just a nice ballance. Some big connected lore, but also some short atmospheric hitters like these.
I'm going through a massive binge of Audible 40k audio books at the moment. Ciaphas Cain, Eisenhorn, Ravenor, Priests of Mars series, Cawl, etc... These youtube stories are a great addition, so thank you.
We need more books from BL like pawns of chaos. That banger is still the best ive heard on this channel. Also really enjoyed this one. Couldn't agree more that one shot novella style releases would be greatly appreciated, as i myself am not keen on huge book series amd prefer a concise story arch.
Volpone Glory and Outgunned are recent one off novels not connected to a bigger narrative. Both are excellent, with Volpone Glory really bringing back the old school grimdark
The critique at the end was standard fare for this type of video. (a response to another viewer) I do agree with one of the first few replies that the Eldar did not attack the escape ship but the original freighter. I think it was this video that you were laughing at the double entendre, classic BP!
Another enjoyable piece. Really like these smaller stories. How do you keep track of how each character talks? I feel like I'd use the wrong voice for one or change their way of speaking on accident.
26:36 Good to see some things never change no matter what millennia you are in.😏 AB telling a 40k story involving space ships is always worth the price of admission. There are _none_ better at it. 😮👍🏻

Prince is a fantastic voice actor. Really brings the characters to life but a young girl who speaks “as blue and clear” as the spring is out of his wheel house Lolol
You voicing the kid made it perfectly fitting, feeling off, strange, alien, mocking humanity in a sense. 👌👌
cheers, its always weird to me

If this is an "excellent" example of 40k without the wider Primarch/Space Marine stuff, I'm beyond glad it's no longer like this. Beyond boring. 😴

The stuff from late 90s/early 2000s is so awesome. This one is from 2003 i think. Maximum Grimdark minimal Noblebright.
I love the rat named Leman
Loved this. Grim horror at it's best. I love chaos stuff, traitor marines are so much more fun than the fuddy-duddy Imperium.
Heretic!😫 Inquisitor!😵💫
Need an Inquisitor here!
The inquisition would like to know your location.
All the crying about traitors being better is always suspect to me
I too like the one off stories. Gives the universe more depth.
Im three minutes in and already love it. More chaos please.
Fantastic. Really enjoyed the story, and have always very much enjoyed how you occasionally leave in a little chuckle or comment or struggled through pronunciation during the read. Thanks for all your work.
“Mellifluous murmurs” had me chuckling…😂

Gunnar and Russ were definitely space versions of Minsc and Boo.
I do miss the old tales. ❤
Bxut boo is the space version of boo 😂

Wow, thank you!

Just checked in hoping for something and you’ve answered. If I’ve been telepathic I’d best watch out for a black ship

Sadly there are barely any of the older books. Early 2000s was truely best age.
nice glad it adds to it
agree the golden era
Agreed!! The one off stuff is very good!!
Very much looking forward to the longer up and coming stories!!
Thanks man!!

Lol, it was a rather low brow accebt fora captin
Do people from Yorkshire have low set eyebrows? Im confused. Why do yorkshire citizens have this genetic issue? @@johnanon658

How do you keep track of how each character talks? I feel like I'd use the wrong voice for one or change their way of speaking on accident.
practice i think was harder at the start. you read them before and see what they say and do and figure out a good voice to represent that
Silly question but i didnt hear him say that he was but if not was gunner a ogryn?
Good stuff mate
cheers
This is what happens when there's no Comissar around.
That wax most excellent ❤
thanks
Nice. But. Where did the inquisitor come from and where did he go? Had like one small mention 😅

Am I the only one who is more disturbed by ABP’s little girl voice than the actual story? 😂
