Start small with a Ford Ranger. Some of the nicest trucks are built into high dollar prerunners.

probably for packaing and capacity, takes alot to keep those 40s spinnin
To get it in a safe location plus they're larger and stronger. You probably don't want your fuel cell below your back bumper considering the travel the have up and down. Even just mobbing down a bumpy dirt road without the travel the stock gas tank would be a accident waiting to happen. I'm also assuming that once you theyremove the bed the gas tank might look kinda funny sitting there.

Totally, I drove a prerunner ranger as a daily driver for 11 years.
1993 4.0L and 5 speed, it saw lots of baja action, and it was tough and reliable.
Currently its being turned into a full race truck.
