    Well, in my country (a small East European state named Romania) things are a little bit different. When it comes to the price, Africa Twins starts from 14 500 Euros, and the 850 GSA starts from 13 100 Euros. When it comes to the weight, the BMW wights 248 kg (548 pounds) filled with all fluids and ready to drive. On the other hand Honda Romania declares a 226 kg (498 pounds) for the EMPTY Africa Twin. We must take in consideration that the entry level version of Africa Twin has a 18 l (4 US GAL) fuell tank and the Adventure Sport Version has a 25 l (6 US GAL) fuell tank .We must also take in consideration the fact that the BMW comes equipped with crash bars which Honda hasn't. But you're gonna need crash bars on an ADV, isn't it? So, more money, more weight! If we consider all those facts, the conclusion is very simple. There is no difference between Africa Tween and 85 GS in terms of wight. But I won't stop here.... The 850 GS comes with spoked tubeless wheels in STANDARD. That's not the case of Africa Twin. The 850 GS comes STANDARD with adjustable windscreen. That's not the case of Africa Twin. You must pay around 2000 euros more if you want those options on the Japanese motorcycle.
    One more thing.... when I've seen this video's title I was expecting to see people riding bikes and not just photos and statistics. Let's not talk abouT the fact that in all those fotos you showed the Adventure Sport version of Honda which is more expensive than the standard one and it looks much better.
    I'm Honda owner, and Iike my NC 750 X a lot. But I'd pick the 850 GSA without any doubts!

      The 226KG is the wet weight for the CRF1100L (base model, not adventure - with manual transmission). AFAIK Honda always quotes wet weights. So the Honda weighs less and delivers significantly more torque, power and has better fuel efficiency. I’ve not ridden the 850GS but those who have ridden both complain it is much more top heavy. Regarding costs, any initial outlay increase buying the Honda will be more than be offset by cheaper servicing and parts.
      In the end, the better bike is the one you prefer. If that’s the BMW then buy it. Specifications only speak part of the story.

    I would suggest that 85% of the people who buy these bikes, like me, don't buy them to off road them but because they love the looks, the comfort and also their touring capabilities. I got the BMW 850 Rallye (not an adventure model). I don't need the extra fuel load as in Europe you have petrol stations every few kms. The range on a tankful is around 300kms so around 3 hours in the saddle. No need for more weight. My bike is light and comfortable and does everything the Adventure and the AT models do.

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with on the motivations for buying bikes like these. They just don't make sense when touring long distance far from civilization. But they are awesome touring bikes. I'd much rather tour on a GS or AT than an RT or Goldwing.
      Ps. even in Africa, 300km is generally enough between filling stations... we only had to use our spare fuel twice between Cape Town and Cairo and we had a range of just over 300km.

GPS navigation coming to the main TFT display like the boxers have now from iPhone/Android is brilliant, no need for GPS unit. No need to have to shake my phone on a ugly bracket on the handlebar. It is partly phone GPS integrated in the TFT display now, I am sure next year model will have the new large Boxer TFT display with full GPS on the main display as well. The Jug/shuttle control wheel of the TFT display on the handlebar is second to none, extremely easy to use. I think the BMW will get the BMW M High Performance maintenance free chain soon. Drive shaft as the boxer have is too heavy and not easy to do maintenance on. Besides the BMW GS community has to be mentioned as well.
