So, baseball fans, savor it. 💙

I can't remember anything that big in that magnitude of a game. Down to ur last strike 5x from losing & going home depressed for the winter & for the Sox 1 strike away from being Champs. A game Like that shows u anything can happen as long as the final out is not on the board. 2 out nobody on base in the 10th & u come back & win it that fast. Wow! No bomb home run either 3 base hits in a row a wild pitch than a roller that gets by poor Buckner. The Mets fans stuck it out honestly that's awesome that stadium did not look like everyone left. I really have to think fate or some force made that wild pitch happen. Mookie said it made him start to believe in some higher forces a bit lol. He put it best " when I got up to the plate we were down 1 suddenly I'm still there tied so I'm in the driver's seat" so true. I love watching how excited he is when the pitch went by & he's on the ground waving Mitchell in. Another great fact is the 1st base coach Said Carter Mitchell & knight all said " im not gonna be the last out of this m fing world series. " mookie said the same to himself. 4 guys in a row had the most intense pressure on them & all delivered. Mookies at bat of course was epic b/c he kept fouling off all those pitches so it allowed something to happen. Lastly to blame Buckner is insane. So much blame led up to that how bout taking clemens out after he was on fire. He was 24 u rest him all post season. Whoever u believe clemens or McNamara it was a bad move. The big heel if u can't just credit the Mets is Calvin shiraldi. He gives up 3 base hits in a row. The wild pitch. Plus if Buckner got to it mookie was very fast that roller he beats Buckner out. Then it's tied & the Mets had all the momentum. Look what they did that year in 16 inn to Houston cause they did not want to face unhittable Mike Scott.

@@nattyps3160Very well stated. Having the sequential hits like that is almost unheard of in any late game. Having it happen in the world series is monumental.
And I agree that Buckner should not bear the blame. Let's face it, as soon as the Mets tied it, that whole series was over. It's hard to beat back big mo.

Mets fan here so thanks, Yankee fan! (I still hate the Yankees with all my heart :) ) You could argue that in the WS two years later Kirk Gibson's homer against Eckersley capped off as great a comeback, but that was in the first game of the series. Here, the Mets were facing what looked like certain elimination, and pulled off the amazing. Then came from behind in game 7, though not quite as dramatically, to win the series.

I'm a lifelong Red Sox fan. That night I was in the air flying to Sri Lanka to join the Peace Corps. When we got to the Embassy we heard what happened. A couple of weeks later we started getting newspaper clippings from friends and family, and six months later my Dad sent me the video.
It still hurts, although '04, '07, '13, and '18 certainly help.
    Poor Bill Buckner, though.
He never deserved all the blame.

As luck would have it, I went to more Mets games during the 1986 Season than ever before. That Mets team NEVER quit. I remember thinking the Mets could come back in that fateful 10th inning, but after Keith hit the ball for a "hard out", I shamefully thought it was over. I was stunned how deep the Sox played Carter in the outfield to protect the extra base hit...there were 2 outs and a 2 run lead. When Carter hit the ball I thought it was going to be a pretty easy out. Gary Carter was a key catalyst of that '86 Mets team. He made all their pitchers better as well. Mets were always smart/lucky like that behind the plate. If you want a great pitching staff, you better get a great catcher who can play defense and call a game. RIP Gary Carter.
1986 Mets....best "Team" I ever saw play. Always picked each other up.
However I am a bias Life Long Met fan.

    • @Mrd9960

Yeah the ball just died and fell to the ground, as soon as Carter hit it, I thought it would carry more than it did and I was surprised also, how far back Rice was playing, if he played maybe just 10-15 feet in more, that ball would have been caught, game over.

I just noticed that 35 years later! Maybe if if Knight didn't see the play or held up for some reason... Mookie wanted to avoid ending the inning w/ an easy force out at 2nd for the following batter (?) Make 'em make the throw to 1st? That'd be pretty sophisticated thinking while sprinting... but my best guess.

I was 17 years old watching this at home and was such a nail biter to watch till Mookie hit that bouncer. I was hoarse the next morning from screaming all night that my Mets won.

Normally the Red Sox manager would have pulled Billy Buckner, who had really bad ankles, for a better defensive player but he wanted him out there

I remember watching this-- what a roller coaster ride!
What stood out for me was after Knight scored, the camera just kept panning around Shea Stadium showing the joyous pandemonium-- the announcers saying nothing. This went on for something like 10 minutes.
I think the Daily News the next morning had a huge headline with only two words: "They're Alive!"--- no one in the city needed further explanation...

I felt bad for Billy Buckner though.
Buckner and Steve Bartman should have had a podcast "Rabbits Foot" with special guest Jeffrey Meier. RIP Bill. He was a real Ball player.
Fun Fact: He's 4th all time in assists as a 1st baseman... A position he did take on until he was 27 and a half years young.

I really cant think of a more wild do or die world series game than this. I was too small to have watched but being a New York'er I just knew of the legend. I know it was a game 6 not 7 but still the mets were about to be eliminated at one point down 2 outs 2 strikes last inning. If Boston could have just gotten one out.
I never understood why buckner was so blamed. By the time mookie hit that " little roller along 1st" the game was tied after the wild pitch. So if bill got the out it would have went to extra innings '' if anyone is to blame its those last 2 pitchers who gave up 3 straight base hits , the wild pitch & buckner at the end. As a kid the way people talked about it , it was like game 7 & that play lost then the series. They still had game 7 & were winning & still lost at home. Sometimes it's just the other teams year. The hbo special on this is amazing & the one they did when they came back the yankees being down 3-0 then won 4 straight in spectacular fashion , u knew the world series was just a formality. Brad Robert's the fast base stealer should get major credit bc his heads up base running helped & big papi was reggie jackson esq I believe he was called " senior october "

  • @jwandhistools

Goat of that game was not Buckner.
It was Bob Stanley. Buckner didn't put anyone on base or toss a wild pitch to tie the game.

To make it even more dramatic...ALL 4 batters shown, had 2 strikes on them before their hits. The Mets were down to their last strike so many times because Mookie Wilson had a 10 pitch at bat also.

I have been trying to find a Bill Buckner tribute from Bob Stanley. I haven't seen one anywhere and it really how he never made any tribute. Had it not been for that error, Bob Stanley would have taken the entire heat for the Red Sox defeat.
