SOG Switchplier Review - Nutnfancy

  • Maybe the fast deploying pliers in the SOG Switchplier 2.0 are enough reason to buy this multi-tool. They pop out like a switchblade and this MT is fun to play with. Of course I'll discuss how some compromises are made to made this rapid deployment possible. The toolset overall is a bit limited and I compare it against the collectible Leatherman Blast MDMT which checks it at the same weight and size. For many though the important stuff is there in the SOG Switchplier 2.0 and it's excellent pliers are a highlight.

    Old video, discontinued tool. *BUT* I found one on eBay! Not too much of a mark-up I'd say, all things considered. Really wanted one. Found some dude overseas with one that is New-Old stock, still in the packaging from what his original photo shows. Collectors will despise me, but I'm going to EDC it. Don't care! I'm a multi-tool collector too. Personally, I like the sympathetic deployment. Just easier pulling up on the outer most tool, to more easily get to one on the inner tools that you want, which will pop up partially. I love that. Thanks for the vid. nutn.

    I've owned a pair of these for over a year now and love them and carry them as part of my EDC. You're right, playing with them is addictive. One down side is lint from my pocket tends to collect in the "gear" section even when carrying it in a closed fabric knife pouch and it can gum up the action (so it requires regular cleaning and WD40 lubing). To your point about the tools, I do carry a pocket knife in my other pocket for quick blade access. Great review sir.

    I've owned this MT since the day it came out. I bought it for the sheer deployment. I love that the pliers have a spring as well. Every other tool was a bonus. Luckily I have a dedicated knife, and dedicated every other tool. Love the switch for what it is. If i need something heavier I got a charge TL which is a beast. Great video. Love the watch at the beginning!

    I go to an A&P school(Aviation mechanics) and I have a full size tool box with almost every tool I need, however I have carried this tool every day there and I half to say, the best feature is that you can open the pliers with one hand. I can't tell you how many times I have been holding something up with one hand and just needed pliers to move some sharp safety wire out of the way and these make that so easy every time. There are downsides, but I basically only use them as pliers, anything else I will just go grab the right tool for the job.

      Exact same thing here for two pair a friend of mine and I got. Light every day duty, the kind I'd attribute to a gerber dime or leatherman squirt, and the plier heads folded. Sheered the locking plug cutaway on the inside on both of them.

  • @3rockranch
    @3rockranch 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've carried this for over a yr. Some other things to consider are the pliers don't open very wide, the coil for the assisted opening can interfere with the pocket clip and if you apply any real pressure on the pliers the spring binds on the handle.

    Great review! I’ve wondered about this tool. I personally will get this for the pliers because I have situations where I need the rapid deployment. The other tools are bonus. I currently carry a Leatherman Skeletool so I’d be upgrading my tool selection. I carry a Leatherman Micra for the scissors and smaller tools.
    Let’s see more multitools!!

    I had these pliers. Though they were fun for sure they were not for me. My plier head never deployed consistently and could not get the same strength out of the pliers as other pliers of MDMT size or even my Leatherman juice. Ended up selling it but it's an interesting idea

    When I did structural fire fighting I kept one in my bunker gear. It was the only multi tool I could open quick and easy with Structural fire gloves on. I kept it in the gauntlet of my glove so if I got entangled while going internal I had something quick and fast to cut my way free. I had a pair of linesman pliers in my cargo pocket so for other things I used those but they would be hard to reach if I got entangled.

    I bought one of these about a year ago. It's pretty cool for its plier switchiness but I usually carry the Leatherman Skeletool because of the rapid knife blade deployment. Still, I carry it sometimes, and the Switchplier is bound to make an impression.

    I'm glad this tool is working for you, but I can't say me or my roommate had luck with them. We both got one each, and I have to say it's light duty only with those pliers. During her use with me, the wire cutters failed consistently to cut thin tin seals off of trucks (they'd overlap the cutters), and eventually both sets did the same thing. The gimmicky plier head sheered somewhere inside and caved, would no longer hold torque to the heads.
    And neither me nor buddy hogged down on the things, just wear and tear for normal use. I didn't put pressure on the pliers more than I would a pair of scissors from gradeschool and they still busted, just not as fast as buddies did. He was trying to turn a bolt to hand tight torque and they gave within a month. The tools feel flimsy on the inside as well, with how thin they are. Overall, it just wasn't worth it to me to even bother returning them to amazon.

    Love your channel your awesome. I do have concerns that you don't report some of the major issues with the SOG gear. I've tested the switch plier and found the plier gets stuck in the closed position and if you put any weight on the squeezing it bends the pier gear and the tool does not flick upon. I've had to tweak the tool to get it actually work. SO I sent three back to SOG and each one had the same issue. Same concerns with the Q3. Have you used the baton q3 I have had three of these and the handle slides forward when you try to clamp down on something. SO I foudn that the plier is unusable. I love the amazing production time you put on the show. I was also very sad when I heard about your pup passing. Really amazing dog. I send my blessings to your family.

    I have the Power Assist but it's a drawer Queen. I always grab my Leatherman MTs instead. Tools clump together and all deploy together. Tried reconfiguring but still only use for extra plier power. Horrible ergos and hate the blade locks.
    Love my Wingman for EDC but got mine at the previous price point.

    Hey Nutn, how about a review on the Gerber centre drive, I know it's gerber and its an HDMT but has nice long driver and would be interested to know if two hands can pull apart plyers if they jam up with certain media when using wire cutters, unlike most leathermans where handles just fold back and plyer head stays jammed closed?

  • @bw83m94
    @bw83m94 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm surprised you liked the Blast. First good quality multi tool I ever bought, and ended up hating it. The plastic insert seemed cheesy, and I found it quite uncomfortable if I really had to squeeze on it. The Wave, Rebar, and I'd even say wingman/sidekick blow it out of the water.

    reminds me of the leatherman crunch.
    for 50 bucks my personal favorites are the juice and the skeletool. they are enough for my uses.
    i thought the reactor would be the skeletool killer but imo it is not. the ergos and stuff for this switchplier remind me of that.

      Mine never held up to flimsy tin truck seals, out of the box. And after more use, the heads gave up the ghost anyway. Blast probably got retired as Rebar completely takes over its niche, really. By the way another reason to love the Charge/Wave/Rebar family is the immense modularity, you can swap the internal tools back and forth at will, provided one process the knowledge and tool to put them back together. Here's what I did even before Leatherman came up with the Wave+:
    No scissors because I do have a pair of Gingher 4" in my system, no straight edge main blade because I always carry at least 2 folding knives on person when possible.
    You might already guessed what I call this breed between Wave and Rebar-why, WABAR of course! What else can it be, right?!
    P.S. Do check out the new SOG Powerpint while you are at it, it's like a pumped up Squirt PS4, with pocket clip and all locking tools. Has been my personal favorite MDT throughout the 3 months since I got it.

    • @nutnfancy
      @nutnfancy  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the sidekick should have one too. It does suck having to buy a leatherman clip as an accessory for the Wave, but that one's pretty good at fittin' in pockets. You can sometimes find the skeletool for a deal, but it doesn't have a huge tool selection which plays against it for the weight. I think I grabbed mine for $25 on clearance. -Doodle

      I have found Victorinox quality excellent--not less than Leatherman, and sometimes superior. I have a 20 year old SwissTool going strong. And a Leatherman SuperTool going strong for more than 20 years. But--Leatherman is getting a bit slack, and quality control is far from perfect compared to yester years.

    Wire cutter isn't the greatest. I've compared it to leatherman and gerber multi tool. Other tools are awesome. Plier handle is to weak for normal house hold wires. My take on it

    The steel of the side cutter is much too soft!

    Hate when you refer to tools/knives that are out of production. Otherwise love what you are doing!
