    Imagine an ocean where water is constantly boiling, it’s boundless, there is no coast in sight. It stretches as far as the horizon, although this fact is evasive to the observer, because as far as the eye can see the horizon is constantly shrouded in dense fog. Thick clouds with not a chink between them hide a huge, but dim sun. Only negligible fluctuations in the level of light indicate transitions from nights to days and nights again. If it has stopped being pitch-dark and it’s deep grey all around you, it means sunrise. And deep down, under scores of kilometres of water, there lies a billion-ton core of scorching ice. This is what the unique and mysterious world of Gliese 1214 b must look like.

    I left this comment on another video which discussed various exoplanets, but here’s some info about ICE VII (ice seven) in case you were curious:
    - it is formed under extreme pressures (over 30,000 atm) but still relatively ambient - or even hot - temperatures. basically the pressure is strong enough to force the water molecules into a lattice structure turning it into a solid phase, while the temperature can remain around 25°C or hotter. theoretically if you were to touch a cube of solid ice VII, it would feel kind of like touching a cube of metal. just a hard, room temperature block. realistically, you couldn’t actually “touch” it because you wouldn’t be able to physically survive the pressures needed to produce and sustain ice VII.
    - in addition to ocean planets like the one discussed in this video, it is also thought that ice VII could exist at the bottom of some of Europa’s oceans.
    - the only place on earth where ice VII is naturally produced is inside of diamonds. basically very tiny amounts of water are trapped inside diamonds when they are formed, and once the diamonds cool down the water remains. due to the extreme strength and rigidity of the diamond’s lattice, the inside is still at the pressure of the deep mantle, meaning that the water inside can be cooled to room temp but still be in solid ice VII form
    another random fun ice fact: there are currently 18 different known packing forms of ice! the one we know most commonly on earth is called ice I_h (spoken as “ice one h”) and is formed by cooling water past it’s melting point (0°C).
    hopefully this was enlightening to at least some people (:
    sincerely,
    a chemical engineer 😉

      While it's a really cool scifi scenario, it's unlikely, because in order to have life, you need tectonic activity. And if you have tectonic activity, you'll most likely also have land. And there is no land. So it's likely that there is no tectonic activity, which means no chemosynthesis, which means no bacteria.

    I also suspect that too much water would mean a thick ice VII layer would separate the rocky center from the water layer above it, resulting in oceans poor in minerals. At thickness of 1000 Km of ice VII even volcanic eruptions may fail to make it into the ocean and enrich it with minerals.

      maybe because it's hot enough that it should evaporate? But water "boils" at different temperatures depending on pressure, so it isn't actually breaking any laws...
      Like here on earth at sea level water boils at 100C (at 14.7 psi) but increase the pressure to 30 psi and suddenly you can have 110C water not boiling.
      That said, you can get water to 110C in a microwave and still not have it boil here on earth, we call it "superheated". It's weird, and maybe feels like it's breaking the rules, but actually it's really common

    • @Eclipsed_Archon
      @Eclipsed_Archon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have someone to help you (a parent maybe) you can ask to do that experiment too. Microwave some water in a microwave safe bowl, get a thermometer and check how hot it is. Just make sure to be careful, because that hot water is WAY more dangerous than it looks!
      Water boils at 100C, so if it's hotter than that, you know it should be boiling. Maybe you could brainstorm some ideas for why it isn't, and look it up and see if you were close.

    The problem with speculating on life is we speculate with what we know as life and it's requirements. It's foolish to assume all life resembles life here, that's like trying to understand why a penguin can't live in Hawaii or why a whale can't live in the Gobi.

    • @duptygupty
      @duptygupty 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I've had the same thought, but since we know what factors have led to the existence of life here, it makes sense to look for similar requisites. We know this formula works. While it may be the case that life can evolve in drastically different conditions than Earth, that makes the search for life even wider. Which makes it harder to find alien life bc there are just so many planets to consider

    • @divineknowledge4607
      @divineknowledge4607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@duptygupty it's technically possible for life to live on the sun, electrical life. We are biased to earth. Of course we should like to look for our earth biology on other world's but we shouldn't miss what else is in forest for because all we see are trees. I think life will be interesting and head scratching unique when we find it. For all we know their are microscopic intelligent life that formed 45 seconds after the big bang and survived for millions of years before their universe, now ours, changed to the point they couldn't survive. Or possibly they adapted somehow and are still out there, eons ahead of us on a technological scale. But since they are small and a life form we could never dream of, even when trying to, as a intelligent life form let alone what it's made of or it's biomechanics. It could live on dark matter or it could even be dark matter itself. I love this type of speculation, but honestly feel it's futile to for at least 30% of what's oui their forever beyond our comprehension skills.

Of course there can be things out there beyond our comprehension. Things that don't resemble life on earth in any form. And those kind of things are interesting. But what we are most interested in, I think, is a life form that has some resemblance to life on earth. For example, it's at least made of similar atomic components (C,N,O,H, etc.), has significant complexity, uses energy to reproduce itself, etc. Because something like this can tell us about our place in the universe, where we came from, etc. An electric rock made of dark matter that reproduces itself might also be called "life" but in my opinion not what search for extraterrestrial life is after.

But they are there. Under the ice of europa it can be a crowded animal life there or something and that moon is in our system. This planet is anomalous in a number of ways. The biggest aspect is not the deep ocean or Ice VII, but the highly elliptical orbit. Red dwarf suns tend to have closely packed planets in near circular orbits. This one definitely does not. There must have been some external influence in its development- perhaps early on- to account for this. There likely won't be much for any explorers to see there beyond this large, useless steam world.

    Reminds me of Starbound, which has ocean planets, though they're more like Earth's oceans than Gliese 1214b's. It also has magma worlds which is essentially the same thing, except it's all lava instead of water.
    While Kosmo suggests life may not be here, let's keep in mind there's life deep in Earth's oceans where we also thought at one point couldn't sustain life either, until they found hydrothermal vents. Of course, the only way to find out is to travel to that planet and send probes capable of withstanding the planet's extreme environment, and study it.
