Remember, the depth of an earthquake also affects the damage caused. And in this video it is possible that the depth of the earthquake was only under 10km so the building looks very weak, which is rare.

To be pricise, since the type of waves coming out of a erathquake are different depending the material that broke down, depending the rocks above the quake point etch, there's no guarantee that a deeper one could be better but generally speaking the waves travel at different speeds so the deeper it is and the smoother they get when they reach surface, but they also tend to sum up at some points creating resonance and strenghtening at times(creating irregularity spikes) this happens when a slower type of wave is released before a faster one and all depends how the crack happens. Sometimes a deeper one could get worse because of resonance phenomana.
Generally speaking assuming the depth difference is not much between two compared quakes that both have the same type and pattern of uniform cracking, you normally want the deeper one as it spreads further with smoother waves
That said, elastic-based sismic structures tend to deal better with not deep quakes instead. So take into account how are the antisismic standards in your country.... for example wooden and steel antisismics tend to be more elastic than concrete and smoother waves can make them oscillate much more than rougher ones, and taller structures might also show resonance phenomena so they also need to be made so they do not for the most commong type of wave combination in the place they are built.

I was near the epicenter of a 8.8 earthquake in Chile, year 2010. The movement is so strong you cannot stand up on your feet, so I had to crawl like a baby out of my home. It was at night, and in the horizon you could see the lighting due to the power lines doing short circuit when striking to each other and the power transformers exploding due to power grid overloads. It was similar to a war, but with no bombs, just explosions, flashes of light in the night sky and a huge underground noise and vibration, also that earthquake was very long, officially was 3 minutes, but it felt like 10 or more.. then we had several "smaller" aftershocks of 6 and 5 MLs..

I read about a Turkish town whose local council was very strict on building regulations. In fact, they made builders pull buildings back down if they didn't meet standards. The local builders hated the council and the building inspectors but when the 2022 earthquake hit this town was left standing while the towns around it were reduced to rubble.

I am a survivor of both the 9.1 (yes, it was upgraded) quake in Japan and a 7.0 in Alaska. The Japan quake was just under six minutes long. This video missed a few things. First, aftershocks are a very real thing. We had 168 "aftershocks" in the first 24 hours after the quake. They continued at a rate of 5-10 every hour for weeks. These were 4.0 and larger with most above 5.0. Some were over 7.0. Second, there were reports of water debris from the tsunami waves 120 feet up the side of hills. It is easy to see why four+ story buildings were, in a couple of places covered. Three, the quake did much less damage to buildings than the simulation showed because the Japanese figured out how to build earthquake-resistant buildings and homes. Go and look at videos in places like Sendai, Minami-sanriku or Miyako City before the tsunami waves arrives. The buildings are in tact. Only a steel-reinforced concrete building could resist the waves, though.

As a Chilean who experienced 2 earthquakes above 7.0 on the Richter scale, I can say that the issue of structural damage is very variable. My parents' house withstood an 8.8 tremor, but in news from other countries, structures collapse easily with a magnitude 5. It depends a lot on the technology and seismic culture of a country. In Chile at least, we don't worry if the tremor is perceived as less than 5 degrees on the Richter scale.

    • @scootermom1791
      @scootermom1791 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

In some areas, many buildings would fall in magnitudes as "low" as 7 because they wouldn't be structurally sound enough to withstand the shaking. It depends on where the quake is; what kind of waves it produces; where the epicenter is; and if buildings are reinforced enough to be considered "earthquake proof." In places like Taiwan, Japan, Chile and California (I know...not a country...just a state), buildings are more structurally sound than in places that rarely get earthquakes.
We had a "small" 4.5 quake in 2020 where some of the infrastructure started falling apart. There weren't entire buildings or homes falling completely apart, but many of them lost windows and some of the outer structures of their homes. I think there would have been a few buildings that WOULD have completely fallen down if the quake had been a 6.5 considering how much damage a 4.5 did to them.

1)🍞THE GOSPEL OF WORD OF ALMIGHTY GOD "the last age in which God is saving man from the imminent destruction of this old world"
(Do you want to see Jesus? Do you want to live with Jesus? Do you want to hear the words Jesus spoke? But have you ever thought if you will really know Jesus when He returns? Will you really understand everything He said? Everyone who has read the Bible knows that Jesus will return, and everyone who has read the Bible is earnestly waiting for His coming. Everyone is focused on the arrival of that moment, and your faithfulness is commendable, your faith is enviable, but you realize have you made a serious mistake? You believe that Jesus will return on a white cloud, but this is my question to you: What does this white cloud refer to? Do you know His disposition? How much do you understand about Him? First, do you know what is truth, and what is theory? Second, do you know what is understanding, and what is truth? Third, do you know what is thought, and what is true? But I say that you do not understand Him at all, and you do not understand a single word of Jesus. That's because each of you followed Him because of the stories in the Bible, because of what others said. But your understanding of Him is still theoretical and not practical, even though you have personally tasted the food that Jesus ate. Regardless of the situation, you have never seen Jesus before, and you have never been with Him in the flesh, so your understanding of Jesus is always an empty theory without reality. You can't even understand someone you admire, how can you understand Jesus Christ? How can you be worthy to meet Jesus if you understand like that?)
      Almighty God said
Do you WANT to SEE JESUS? Do you want to live with Jesus? Do you want to hear the words that Jesus spoke?
Then, HOW will YOU WELCOME the RETURN of JESUS? Ready--are you ready? HOW will YOU WELCOME the RETURN of JESUS? I think every brother and sister who follows Jesus will want to welcome Jesus.
But HAVE you ever THOUGHT if you REALLY will KNOW JESUS when He RETURNS? ☀️
Can you REALLY UNDERSTAND everything He said? Will you really accept, unconditionally, all the work He does?
EVERYONE who READ the BIBLE KNOWS that JESUS will RETURN, and EVERYONE who READ the BIBLE is earnestly WAITING for His COMING. 🛑☀️
EVERYONE is focused on the ARRIVAL of that MOMENT, and your faithfulness is commendable, your faith enviable, but do you realize that you have made a serious mistake?
      HOW will JESUS RETURN?
YOU BELIEVE JESUS will RETURN BELOW the WHITE CLOUD, BUT this is My QUESTION to YOU: WHAT does this WHITE CLOUD REFER to? ☀️
With so many disciples of Jesus waiting for His return, to whom will He descend? 😪
If Jesus comes to you first, won't others consider it very unfair? I know that you are very sincere and very faithful to Jesus, BUT have you FACED JESUS?
      Do you know His DISPOSITION?
Are you WITH Him? HOW MUCH do YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND ABOUT Him?
Some would say that these words put them in an awkward position.
They will say, "I have so many bases after reading the Bible from beginning to end. How can I not understand Jesus? Let's not understand the disposition nor do I know the color of the clothes He wants to wear. Do you despise me when You say that I don't understand Him?"
I suggest that you do not argue about these matters; it is better to calm down and be together about the following questions: First, do you KNOW WHAT is FACT, and WHAT is theory? ☀️
Second, do you KNOW WHAT IS UNDERSTANDING, and WHAT IS TRUTH? ☀️
Third, do you KNOW WHAT is thought, and WHAT is REAL? ☀️
Some people deny the TRUTH that they DON'T UNDERSTAND JESUS. But I SAY that you DO NOT UNDERSTAND Him at all, and you DO NOT UNDERSTAND a WORD of JESUS. That's because each one of you follows Him because of the stories in the Bible, BECAUSE OF WHAT OTHERS SAID. 😪😪
You have NEVER SEEN JESUS, nor CHOOSE Him, and you have NEVER BEEN WITH Him for a short period of time. Therefore, isn't your UNDERSTANDING of Jesus just THEORY? 😪
Isn't this NOT TRUE? Perhaps some people have seen the picture of Jesus, or some have personally visited Jesus' home. Maybe some have already touched the clothes of Jesus. HOWEVER, your UNDERSTANDING of Him is still THEORETICAL and NOT PRACTICAL, even though you have personally tasted the food that Jesus ate.
Regardless of the situation, you have NEVER SEEN JESUS, and you have NEVER BEEN with Him in the FLESH, that's why your UNDERSTANDING of JESUS is always a POINTLESS THEORY with NO FACT. ☀️
MAYBE you are NOT that INTERESTED in what I SAY, BUT this is My QUESTION to YOU; Even though you may have read MANY WORKS by your FAVORITE WRITER, can you COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND him even if you have NEVER MEETED him? Do you know his personality? Do you know his lifestyle? Do you know anything about his feelings? YOU CAN'T even UNDERSTAND SOMEONE you ADMIRE, HOW can you UNDERSTAND JESUS CHRIST? 🛑🙏
EVERYTHING you UNDERSTAND about JESUS is full of IMAGINATION and CONCEPTION, and holds NO TRUTH or FACT. It was fragrant, and full of flesh. 😪
HOW will you be WORTHY--SHOULD WELCOME JESUS if that's how you UNDERSTAND? JESUS will NOT ACCEPT PEOPLE full of FANTASY and CONCEPTS of the flesh. HOW did the people NOT understand Him BELIEVE in JESUS? ☀️🙏

Wow! This was not only educational but also very impressive! I love the attention to detail like the chalkboard in the school reflecting areas at higher risk for earthquakes and the radio/TV in the background warning people not to use candles for lighting. IMO, this was a very well done, realistic video of the power of earthquakes.
Some people say they felt the video was "too drastic". I disagree. In fact, I think it wasn't drastic enough because power lines would come down; plumbing lines would break; there would be fires everywhere; etc. Aside from those things, the actual building damage was very well-presented IMO because most places DON'T have retrofitted infrastructures to withstand major earthquakes. Those places will have entire buldings falling down and crumbling apart. I think you should do a video comparing retrofitted structures vs. non-retrofitted buildings in magnitudes of 6.5 and higher. I also think you should create a video showing what to expect in areas that have liquifaction. Liquifaction magnifies the damage to homes, office buildings, etc. And, if there are large bodies of water (ie the Mississippi River, the Great Lakes, etc,), would there be tsunamis as well?

Also matters if youre on greywake or soft sediments like sandstone/gravels. As an example NZ city is directly on the fault line.

It’s true, since the magnitude represents the maximum level of shaking, which is usually within a few miles of the epicenter. The more outwards you go, the lower the magnitude is for that quake. I was about 45 miles from a 6.9 but likely felt something more like a 6.0. Were you close to the epicenter?

Great video, lots of nightmare fuel. Something scary about the Richter Scale. It is open-ended. You can have negative ratings as well as positive. So, there is lots of scope for massive quakes. On Earth, you could not go above magnitude 10, but some people have hypothesized, quakes of a magnitude 15 may be theoretically possible. However, starquakes on neutron stars could reach magnitude 29. However, to end on a lighter note, a magnitude -15 quake has the same force as a mote of dust landing on a table. 😊

I HONESTLY have never been in an earthquake stronger than the magnitude 6.0 in 2014 during the Napa Valley Earthquake.
That's the BIGGEST one I've EVER ACTUALLY been in personally. And that one shook for just a few moments and then stopped. And I wasn't that close to the epicenter either; I was about 51 miles away.
I was in San Francisco at work when it struck, and I felt some moderate shaking. My partner (who called me IMMEDIATELY following the quake) was at home in our house in Vallejo (only about 20 miles from rhe epicenter), and the shaking was MUCH WORSE up there because of how much closer to the epicenter it was. He said our dogs went NUTS right before it hit, and that the house was shaking at first, and then started rolling.
TG 🙏 I'd had our home's foundation Earthquake braced and bolted just six months prior to the quake in February of 2014, and the quake was in August of 2014 -- GOOD TIMING!
Part of our chimney fell down (I had it steel rod braced to the roof afrer having it rebuilt) but compared to what happened in Napa itself, Vallejo wasn't AS HARD hit. Except for the chimney, our house was COMPLETELY fine, which was great.
Its a 1925 Craftsman-style bungalow and its sturdy and well-made, but earthquakes can take everything you have. A broken water main flooded our street for several hours, but was repaired by the city fairly quickly and part of the sidewalk across the street in front of our neighbor's house had buckled, but that was about as bad as it got in our neck of the woods.
I'd felt lots of little ones during my time living in SF from 2004-2014, but they were all MUCH smaller than 6.0, so that's why I say the Napa Valley quake was the biggest one I've ever experienced.

Relatively chill besides the whole island losing power for days. There were a couple of massive boulders the size of a small house that fell onto one of the highways blocking up traffic for miles.

Remember that the duration increases in time as the intensity of the force becomes greater. Refer to the commentators that were in the Chile earthquake.

great video! i really enjoyed how you illustrated the differences in earthquake magnitudes. but, honestly, i feel like the scale used can be misleading; a small increase in magnitude makes a huge difference in impact, which i think is often overlooked. just my two cents!

I live in El Salvador, we have constant earthquakes all the time from 4 to 7-8 richter. I can tell you that in a 4 to 6.5 things just don’t move too much like that; yes it’s strong but most things stay in place

As a person who experienced several earthquakes I can tell you that your scale if off. A magnitude of 5 in your sim is actually a 7 in real world.

I was in a 6.8 earthquake in Washington state in 2001. The only reason we didn't get more damage is because it was deep and all the tall buildings had been retrofitted over the previous decade. My high school was built in the 1920's and had just been retrofitted the year before.
