  • In this episode of the Habits & Health podcast, host Tony Winyard welcomes guest Dr Mike Mew to discuss the topic of straightening teeth naturally. Dr Mew suggests that people from less developed countries tend to have straighter teeth and better facial form due to lower sugar consumption. He emphasises that dental development is not a linear process and varies across different regions.
Dr Mew expresses his interest in conducting further research on this topic, especially criticising the lack of attention given to existing research. He also mentions the upcoming court case with the general dental council, expressing hope for a different outcome regarding treatment.
He shares his personal challenges and sacrifices in pursuing this approach, including dealing with the stress of a court case and managing the health condition of Crohn's disease. He highlights his efforts to initiate a debate on the causes of crooked teeth and express concerns about invasive treatments like fixed braces.
The discussion moves on to the impact of modern medicine and the need for individuals to take responsibility for their own health. He argues that chronic diseases often stem from the disparity between how humans evolved to live and current lifestyles. He criticises the expectation that doctors can simply make people better without effort from the patients.
The episode delves into the specifics of improving facial form and aligning teeth naturally. Dr Mew mentions their viral lecture on this subject, which garnered a large following, particularly on Reddit. He emphasises the potential benefits of standing up straight and keeping the mouth shut to improve facial form and shares examples of indigenous people with well-formed faces and straight teeth without orthodontic intervention.
Dr Mew highlights the challenges posed by traditional orthodontic methods, which he believes can have long-term problems with balance. He argues that his approach focuses on improving facial form and allowing children to align their own teeth rather than forcing teeth into position indefinitely.
He expresses frustration with the lack of comparative research between his method and traditional orthodontics, emphasising the need for large-scale studies and funding. He discusses the difficulty of obtaining evidence in this field and criticises the profession for dismissing claims without engaging in a productive debate.
Throughout the episode, Dr Mew raises concerns about the orthodontic profession's influence and their focus on benefiting themselves rather than the patients. He also recounts personal experiences with his father's concerns about potential facial damage caused by orthodontics, highlighting the profession's dismissal of these concerns.
In conclusion, this episode provides a thought-provoking discussion on the natural straightening of teeth and its implications for overall health and well-being. Dr Mew challenges traditional orthodontic methods, calls for further research, and advocates for a more holistic approach to dental and facial health.
    Bio:
Dr. Mike Mew is a renowned expert in the field of orthodontics, specialising in the treatment of crooked teeth. With a strong belief that crooked teeth are a genetic issue, he advocates for mechanical solutions to correct this problem. He firmly believes that if something grows in a certain way due to genetic factors, there is little that can be done to change it. Instead, he focuses on using mechanical techniques to fix and align teeth. Dr. Mew's passion for this approach stems from his father's influence and their accumulation of compelling scientific evidence. As a result, he has become a highly respected figure in the orthodontic community.

I have been a massage therapist for 30 years, when I treat a client and see their spine and notice a scoliosis I am 90% correct when they confirm they have had fixed braces. Prepubescent children before and after braces changes their spine especially cervical, tmj, frontal, ethmoid, cranium in general. That is my clinical experience.
