    By the way, a 2x4 wall with 7/16 osb plywood filled with rock will stop anything up to 308. line the safe side with 1/4" steel plate and it will stop up to 338 lapua. Makes good cover shooting positions, or safe rooms.

      @Zach cash Yes, a rock wall will stop AP rounds too, it is mainly because the rocks, preferrably river rock, deflects the rounds as they hit the rocks dissipating the energy instantly.

    I wonder about 2 layers of ceramic tile laid into the pan in a staggered fashion. With each layer of tile taped together to keep it from falling away as it breaks. Cutting the book along the spine would keep you from having a centered week spot. Or use printer paper. Tape the paper into a bundle to keep it dense. Maybe a final pan behind the book too?

    • @Cetok01
      @Cetok01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Half a ream of 9.5" x 14" paper taped together instead of an open book. A couple sheets of overlapped small mosaic tiles on mesh instead of the rocks; use rubberized glue (e.g., Flex-Seal, etc.) instead of the white glue to add flexibility. Also, try body-forming the pans/package to minimize voids.

    if you used smaller rocks (pebble/gravel size) to fill in the space between the larger rocks and actually made sure the glue was 100% dry i think you'd be good for 7.62x39. also the glue should totally cover the rocks so when it dries there is no space for the rocks to move around when shot, solid block of glue and rocks. i think that's where your armor failed - the rocks were too easy for the 7.62 to move w/ the wet glue. melting plastic around the rocks would probably be even more effective. using a harder igneous stone like granite would be good too, doesn't have shear layers like say sandstone for example. very cool experiment, good stuff!

    • @noahfischer3088

      I should mention that Bolts or glue ? Your choice. Both work. Equally. Reasons?
      Bolts act as A pain-to repair if destroyed by a round.
      While also acting as Shrapnel if Destroyed destroyed.
      Glue weakens with temperatures.
      Otherwise bam.
      You can stop Most pistol rounds.
      Rifle rounds could require another 2 plates.

    I have seen bullet traps that are based on ceramic marbles. Picture a rubber mat with a few inches of loose ceramic marbles behind it, then a steel plate for a backer. I was told it would stop rifle no problem. As the bullets shatter the marbles, fresh ones fall in place and the powder comes out the bottom screen. Try different types of rocks, hard dense rock. no glue.

    The rocks would work better if you did the glue in layers. A thin layer of cyanoacryllic glue with an instant curing spray to make the rocks stuck to the sheets. Then add smaller gravel, sand, and a Flex Paste layer, leaving just enough space for epoxy before sealing both trays together would be interesting. Taping them together is probably fine. I would personally be curious about using some polyurethane too with the tape. Possibly replace the book with layers of cris-crossing fabric (make the thread perpendicular with each layer) and sheets of fiberglass mixed in. Then, just to get maximum surface area to avoid ricocheting problems, maybe it would be worthwhile to spray the finished panel with some of that graphene/carbon textured bed-liner spray paint. That is, if you’re wanting to completely avoid using Ceramic and Steel. If you are using cheap ceramic tiles or possibly even ceramic magnets, it could be worth making a “dragon skin style” array of them in between the two baking trays instead of using the epoxy hypothesized earlier in the comment. DM me if you like any of these ideas.
    The thought process with the layer of sand (which could be replaced with cat litter possibly, but ideally a Alumina based Desiccant, I’ve never tested them) is that when flex seal is hit, it’ll generate heat, partially melting it. This will be good on one hand, in theory, as it allows the larger internal pieces to slightly move and dissipate pressure. However, you don’t want it to stay wet for long. So, the sand (or maybe cat litter - something else possibly) would then move into the effected area hopefully and cause the flex paste to clot up - in theory - making it regain its form quicker and so it doesn’t have to re-cure or (even worse) start to leak downward
    Edit: after looking at some MSDS pages on these, I wouldn’t use the cat litter - I would probably consider trying “Damp-Rid” or something like that since Alumina based Desiccants will also dissipate and absorb heat as well as moisture. The rest of your design will do a better job of dissipating pressure. But all three together would be intriguing. Plus you could probably arrange a whole set of those free desiccant packs that come with everything for next to no cost

    Was shooting some bricks with friends. 22lr left a stain on the brick. 9mm took little chips out. 45 took bigger chips. AR took big honking chunks out of it. AK cut it in half. Garand... made the brick disappear into a red powder that hung in the air for a minute and wafted towards my neighbor's property. Build something DIY that can stop one of those and I'll run out and get the supplies...

    Heavy ceramic or porcelain tiles. Maybe a piece of granite countertop, or like material but that stuff would get heavy. I'm also curious about hardibacker and durock I think it's called. Durock is mostly pressed foam and concrete.

    So judging by the comments, this is what to use from out to in:
    1 steel tray with porcelain floor tile and resin epoxy inside
    1 more steel tray stacked inside previous pan with sand and epoxy resin
    1 steel tray facing the other way with both porcelain floor tile AND sand with epoxy resin
    1 1/2" stack of newspaper
    Finish by connecting layers with aluminum duct tape and seal and coat by dipping in FlexSeal and let drip dry
    total for 1 _possibly_ level IIIA rifle plate: ~$50.00USD
    depth: ~2in. **May be incompatible with some plate carriers.**
    Would make decent level IV car armor with another half stack and possibly 50bmg rated house armor if double stacked.

    I would hazard a guess that two-part epoxy (something like Araldite) would be a better glue to use, possibly even epoxy casting resin or the epoxy used for fiberglassing, would be a better idea than PVA/craft glue. Trying that out with everything else exactly the same would be very interesting, but I don't really thingk the type of epoxy would make that much difference, because it's just a matrix to stop the pebbles moving around too much.

    The idea of using natural stone to break up the mass of the bullet has merit. But the rocks you used aren't held in place very well, and have lots of gaps in between them. If you made multiple layers of smaller rocks, with something like cheese cloth between each layer, up to the same total thickness, you'd probably be more successful.
    It would still suffer from rapid degradation, as the rocks would shatter. But in each section, the initial impact would be far more likely to be absorbed.

    fact is, rock 1 inch thick will stop a 30-cal FMJ round from a high-powered rifle. Any silicate material has a massive impact absorption ability. Have any ever tried to shoot at solid rock? even a BMG .50 cal won't penetrate much more than an inch in granite rock.

    • @Polarcupcheck

    • @AmericanFreedomPatriot
      @AmericanFreedomPatriot 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Polarcupcheck most river stones are igneous granite rock, very dense heavy stone. much more dense and harder than concrete by a dozen times. Even a 1-inch thick concrete patio stone, while it will break and fragment, it will still will stop a standard 30-cal round from 50 yards away, and even deflect any hand-gun round.

    • @Polarcupcheck
      @Polarcupcheck 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AmericanFreedomPatriot The only thing is his ziplock bag was thick. Had to be about 3+ inches. I would like to see what a duck taped pizza box (like DiGiorno) filled with river rocks can stop. bases on this test, I think it would stop 9 mm.
      I want to know how thick the rock layer was for this test; I estimate between 1 and 1.5 inches. Last time he did 1 pan of rocks and a book. Stopped handguns cold, but .223 went through.

    you should spend 5 more dollars for a completely flat sheet, 2 more cookie sheets And two more bags of rocks. Bake the Rocks onto a completely flat sheet and put in between the two cookie sheets with rocks baked onto them. Also double up cookie sheets. If you wanted to have something a lot thicker add one more Dollar by another book. Leave them closed and tape them on so you have a full book worth of paper the catch shrapnel.
