- Another night has passed. Bodies of mangled peashooters and the remains of puff-shrooms and wall-nuts are strewn across the lawn. The image of the peashooter dead before you is still burned into your head. You can vividly remember the scene: You cautiously watched behind the glass backyard door as he looks back at you with tear-filled eyes. A zombie comes shambling behind him. He looks up at it and accepts his fate. He’s mercilessly killed by the zombie ripping him up by his stalk, his roots and leaves separating from the stalk and the stem. You hear a pitiful, dying groan. 2 puff-shrooms die protecting him, but he’s too far gone. He succumbs to his injuries and dies. Just like that. That was last night, but it still stings you, and you feel a sharp pang of guilt. But it isn’t the first death, nor will it be the last. 4 peashooters, 2 wall nuts, a tall-nut, a torchwood, too many puff-shrooms to count, and one starfruit. That was the damage from just last night. The plants are still trying to recover from the terrible onslaught that came yesterday. You hear a tall-nut trying to console a crying sunflower, but it’s no use. The sunflowers, usually gleeful and full of joy, have finally broken. They are devoid of happiness, a trap so, so many others have fallen into.
As you plant more puff-shrooms for the night, you hear soft moans in the distance and time freezes. You make a bolt for the sliding door. The plants stand their ground. Some start to break down and cry, others close their eyes for one last feel of the world before they die. A few even ask you to shovel them, right then and there. You do as you’re told and replace the fallen plants with puffs. The 2 planterns stand their ground, knowing what will follow.
A single snarling ghoul comes staggering out of the fog, his brown coat and striped tie hanging onto his green and grey rotten flesh. You can see many of the plants’ faces melt with terror. They’ve only experienced this for 2 days each at max, and yet they’ve developed serious PTSD at the mere sound of a walker’s groans. The wall nuts standing before the fog say prayers, praying they’ll survive long enough for you to plant a pumpkin over them. The more brave plants, such as the gatling peas, mow the zombie down effortlessly. They know this is only the beginning. Another zombie, this one wearing a road cone, shuffles out with gargled cries of hunger. He too is promptly killed, but he takes a chunk out of one of the frontline wall-nuts. The wall-nut holds back his tears, stifling them because he knows it isn’t the worst that will come.
Very gradually, the number of zombies that enter at once increases. One minute, 2. Another, 4. “If only you had brought Blovers. Stupid, stupid Blovers,” you think to yourself. The torchwoods are struggling to keep their fires lit. The wall-nuts are struggling immensely. The puff-shrooms are eaten effortlessly. Everything is beginning to crumble. The rain panging on the glass slide-door makes you paranoid. The occasional strikes of lightning illuminate the fog, and you see countless dark, murky silhouettes gnawing away at your beloved plants. Scattered screams are flooding your ears. At this point the whole front line of wall-nuts has crumbled; they have all been eaten to the last speck. The puff-shrooms do next to nothing to hold back the horde. They grow fast, but not fast enough. The torchwoods have been completely destroyed, rendering the peashooters nigh useless. Lane 4 has fallen.
You try to stay focused, but he honest: there’s nothing you can do. You can’t go out in that hellhole; it’s a suicide mission. You rack your options. While thinking everything out, you hear a chomper wail in pain and hear a grisly, wet tear seconds later. His screams are silenced in an instant. He was planted on lane 3. The sunflower on row 2 rips her own stalk in half, killing her instantly. You can’t even blame her for it.
They’re getting closer to the main course.
You lock the sliding door shut and scramble to the other side of the room. You can’t bring yourself to look at what hideous things the walkers have done, let alone the walkers themselves. It’s too much for you to handle. You thought you could ward them off for a little longer.. but you were sorely mistaken.
Everything that’s led up to this moment, you recollect.. every loss, every joyous victory, every sacrifice,.. but you can’t think about that now. The dark night sky illuminates the shuffling silhouettes. They’re finishing eating the sunflowers now. You try to silence the sound with your ears, but the ear-piercing shrieks ring through your head again and again. They’re all gone. Every last plant. And now the horde has a new focal point..

You can’t bare yourself to look at the door handle. It’s shaking. Slowly, but steadily. You hear muffled groans from the door. The lightning illuminates the stalk-and-stem filled mouths. Then, with a slow and eerie motion…
The door slides open.

great desc story, reminds me of another one i saw but this one is just that ever-so-slightly more darker, with the plants wanting to kill 'emselves it gives them more emotion and (not-so-much-longer) life. great work

Actually, the plants and fungus feel the world different than humans and most animals do.... zombies literally being invisible and cannot handle them, hidden in the fog or dark, for plants it doesn't change anything.... the difficulty of unoticing the zombies is for player because he is a simple human with limited feels.... plants doesn't not, but they need to be planted by you to kill the zombies and you have to guess on which lawn the zombie come!!!
