    In this video I will show you how to set up TeamViewer for Wake On Lan so that you can allow your computer to go into Sleep mode to save power and still access it from a remote computer and have it wake up when you need it.

    Great Video! Helped me a lot although i did get stuck on a couple of parts because i was setting up the Remote settings on the remote computer(since i wanted to turn on my computer from my Ipad). I just wanted to clarify what I did incase anyone has the same problems.
    1 - @1:55 During port forwarding I used the STATIC IP of my remote computer.
    2 - @3:39 Incoming LAN connection is set to Deactivated by default, in this video it is set to activated so i set it to activated. I used the EXTERNAL IP for the remote router, DON'T use the routers internal IP because it will not work.
    Now everything works fine for me and I can turn on and control my computer with my Ipad. Thanks for the video helped alot!

  • @aaronb3024

    If this isnt working, go to device manager, network adapters, right click on ethernet or your wireless card, properties, power management, enable magic packet. Then follow the steps in the vid. Use the contacts tab on teamviewer to wake up your computer. Works if you have no Wake on Lan in bios 👍🏻

    I'm also now having the same problem with windows 10, the strange thing is i had WOL on windows 10 working with a public address a few weeks ago, but now seems to have stopped working, and trying to save any changes returns "'Failed to store the Wake-On-Lan settings", I've opened a ticket with teamviewer and am awaiting a response....

  • @jerryboutot
    @jerryboutot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    To Jebble - for some reason you were able to comment on this and I am unable to respond (there is no "Reply" link). Your statement "Teamviewer 10 does NOT accept a local IP for Wake On Lan" is not really relevant here. Nowhere in the video do I have you use a local IP except in your ROUTER, which you must specify the local IP of the machine you want to connect to and the PORT for the port forward. In TeamViewer settings, you use the Public Facing IP Address of your Router and Port number. I hope this clears up any confusion.

      If the PC goes to sleep, you can't access it with TeamViewer unless you do this configuration. It doesn't matter if the computer is right next to you or in another country. PS - this video is pretty old. I'm not sure if it's even valid anymore. Good luck.

    Small tip: for me to get it to work I had to change my network settings in Windows settings to private from public. Sounds weird, but public is actually more restrictive. When you're on private settings it assumes your pc will be at home on a private network, which it is.

    Hi, great tutorial.
    One question, what do you need to fill in the box saying 'Address', in the WOL dialogue? Just the IP address we use to access the router settings?

    • @jerryboutot
      @jerryboutot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use the Public Facing IP Address of your Router and the Port# you set up on the Router for the UDP Port Forwarding.

    • @TheRoberto300
      @TheRoberto300 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AppDataWorks, LLC Thank you for your reply.
      I cannot find such an IP address. It's the same as the External IP Address, right?
      And in my router it says it gets the IP dynamically from my internet provider.
      What should I fill in then?
      Thanks in advance.

    • @jerryboutot
      @jerryboutot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roberto's Games Your router should show you the WAN IP Address even if it's dynamically assigned. If it doesn't, you can find it out by searching "how to find my ip address" on Google. It should come right up at the top of search results. Your ISP does dynamically assign your IP address but it is unlikely to change often. One thing you can do is write it down and then check it periodically. When it changes, change the settings in Teamviewer. This is how I do it.

    • @TheRoberto300
      @TheRoberto300 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AppDataWorks, LLC Hi, thanks again for the reply.
      I'm sorry, but I can't find anything under WAN. In the WAN Set-Up panel, all I see are a bunch of check-boxes, nothing else.
      I do know my target computers internal and external IP and I know my routers internal IP, however, I don't know the router's external IP. That is the one I am looking for, right?
      I tried filling in the IP I get from 'whatsmyip.org', but that doesn't work.
      WOL does work when I use the 'in the same network' option in TM.
      Is there anyway of checking whether a port is properly being forwarded?
      Thanks in adanvce, I hope you're willing to take the time to reply.

    • @jerryboutot
      @jerryboutot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roberto's Games Hi - I think maybe you are getting confused a bit. Let me try and simplify.
      On the PC you are configuring to be reached and to wake up if it's sleeping when you try to reach it from outside the firewall, you configure the router and port forwarding, then configure the wake-on-lan settings in TeamViewer ON THE PC YOU ARE CONFIGURING TO BE WOKEN UP AND REACHED. This is important. Everything I did in this video was done on the PC that I was configuring to wake up from sleep if I try and connect from SOMEWHERE ELSE with Teamviewer. So if you know the Target PC's external IP, it's the Target PC that you are configuring, the Router at the Target PC's location gets the port forwarding. In this example, if you are trying to reach your home PC from work, you configure the Router at Home for port forwarding, specifying the INTERNAL IP of the machine being configured and port #. On TeamViewer on that home PC, you configure the EXTERNAL IP and Port Number in the TeamViewer settings.
      Then from work, you connect to your home PC. If it's sleeping, you wake it up first following the instructions at the end of the video.
      FYI if you don't know the external IP address of the TARGET computer, you need to do a google search using the target computer - search for "how to find my ip address" or "what is my ip address" and the search results will automatically tell you as the very first search result at the top of the page.
      Beyond this, I can't help.

    Hi !
    I've done step by step your tutorial, my target machine is Ubuntu and my other machine is running on OSX the last version. I think I've configured correctly and I've changed setting on the BIOS as well, even I can see "wake up" on the team viewer menu. It seems whenever I push Wake up It sends a wake up packet but the target machine doesn't respond. Do you have any idea what I have to do?

    • @jerryboutot
      @jerryboutot  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm strictly Windows. I know zero about Ubuntu or OSX. However, if you didn't configure the router, your wake up packets won't get through to the target machine.

      Well, I only use this method to be able to connect to my work computer from home and my home computer from work. However, I can't see any reason why you can't connect to your home computer in the USA from a hotel in France. All you need to have is TeamViewer running on the target machine, have TeamViewer configured for Wake-On-Lan, have your computer's BIOS configured to allow Wake-On-Lan, and configure the port forwarding on your router. Just follow the video.

  • @dgpprojektas8813
    @dgpprojektas8813 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    One question. Or that is only for local network (on home network) or work with any network (anywhere) ?

    • @jerryboutot
      @jerryboutot  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's only necessary if you're allowing the PC you want to reach to go into sleep mode. If you do have a PC with TeamViewer on it, and you allow Sleep Mode, then you can wake that PC up from anywhere with TeamViewer logged into the same account. The caveat is that you have to have TeamViewer installed on both PC's and logged in to the same TeamViewer account (or you have the access code for the target PC). Many companies do not allow TeamViewer to be installed on company PC's. Mine doesn't allow it, so I can use my personal laptop at work logged into the public WiFi and that works fine.

      trinhk Good question. I think I remember seeing somewhere that some BIOS's have a setting to allow the computer to be started with a WOL Magic Packet. You would have to do some investigating. I know my PC won't start up from a cold shutdown with WOL.

    • @GreenOnionBrother
      @GreenOnionBrother 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know this is very late, but the answer is yes.^^
      As said, you have to turn it on in the bias, enable anything WOL in your network card, as well as disable green ethernet and energy efficiency related stuff.
      (I'm writing this in case someone else comes along, like I did)
      Fun fact, all the sites said to turn off "fast startup" and "allowing the computer to turn off this device", but it literally only works for me on Windows 10 if they are turned on.

    • @GodOfReality
      @GodOfReality 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You got it working in Windows 10 from the computer being shutdown and not sleep/hibernate? I'm trying to do this right now. Did you have to configure any router settings?

    • @GreenOnionBrother
      @GreenOnionBrother 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, yeah. Port-forwarding, obviously.
      The shutdown mode with which it is possible is the one you have when you click it in the start menu. To be more specific, it's called hybrid shutdown (this allows fast boot). The CMD command for this would be "shutdown /s /hybrid". (I know this because I use eventghost to control my PC with my phone and this was the only type of shutdown that allowed WOL afterwards)
      In the network card settings you have to turn off anything that includes efficiency or green under advanced. HOWEVER, you have to leave everything checked in the power management section. (I'm not exactly sure about the last one - the one about magic packets - I tried it both checked and unchecked and it didn't change anything.)
      It should be noted that if you want to turn on your PC from outside your home network (e.g. the bar on the other side of town) there is an issue: you probably have a private Internet plan as opposed to a business plan. What that means is that you have a dynamic IP address rather than a static one.
      To circumvent this problem you need to set up a dynamic DNS (there are multiple websites who let you do this for free), most routers have the ability to automatically update the IP that way. Instead of an IP address you enter the domain in the field, it should be something like yourwordofchoice.ddns.net or .dtdns.net or .flot.net or whatever.

    • @jerryboutot
      @jerryboutot  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your PC is going into Hibernation, I don't think it will wake up. Check your power settings. Maybe it goes to sleep after X minutes then goes into Hibernation after X minutes. I only allow laptops to go into Hibernation and only when on battery to conserve battery. But if it's an "always on" PC, then I turn off Hibernation completely.

    I'm on Windows 10, using a Netgear router. I have everything set up like you show, except for the DHCP step (I don't have that same page). On my router the DHCP setting only appears in the LAN page. The router is, however, remotely accessible through my public ip and port 8080. I have the port forwarded, I have the port enabled in the firewall of the host computer, I've enabled all the WOL settings. When I go to enter the public ip and chosen port (I went with 19 since 7-9 might not work because I'm unable to install the 'simple TCPIP services') TeamViewer says 'Failed to store the Wake-On-Lan settings. Please try again.' Any ideas?

    • @pavichokche
      @pavichokche 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @jerryboutot
      @jerryboutot  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +pavichokche I don't have Windows 10 installed on any of my machines, so I can't really help with this. But I can tell you that forwarding port 8080 isn't going to work. Forwarding port 8080 will try and reach an HTTP SERVER (web server) on the machine whose IP address you are forwarding to. Remember WAKE ON LAN must be enabled in the BIOS. The Port number you use in the Router can be anything except reserver port numbers (80, 8080, etc.). Port 9 should be set up in the router as the incoming port, and the same port number should be set in the router along with the INTERNAL IP ADDRESS of the computer you are trying to reach from the outside world. It won't work if your PC has a dynamic IP address set through DHCP on the router. Once you set up the Router, then you just set up your TeamViewer installation on the TARGET computer with the same port number that you set up in the router's port forwarding.

      @markavrin2651 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +AppDataWorks, LLC - Hayk is referring to the IP of the router (public nat address for PC) being DHCP with provider, you have to pay extra to most providers to have a static external address for your routers public address. At least with Comcast where I live you do, its a few extra bucks a month. Otherwise it COULD change when router reboots. You mention this in your first comment where you say " you use the Public Facing IP Address of your Router and Port number" then you contradict above where you say "That's it. No public facing IP address is involved in this." But actually there is. Anyway..... good video, thanks for the tips.

      This is specifically for connecting over the internet to your home computer or work computer from a remote computer, using Remote Desktop.

    ok, so when I want to wake the computer up them I have to do this from my own network at home. What if I was at Starbucks and I need to connect to this computer, i can't do it because I don't know that router's information right. For instance I'm setting up my girlfriends laptop, she lives in denver but I can set her up and wake her computer if it is a sleep if I'm at home, but what if I wasn't, I'm at a coffee shop and I need to get to her computer what can I do?

      @jerryboutot  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Danl, if you have TeamViewer installed on your laptop and you're logged in to your TeamViewer account, you can take that laptop anywhere you want to, and as long as you are connected to the internet and the target computer also has TeamViewer installed and you've saved the connection on your laptop, you can connect to that computer. You don't need to know the router's information, that's the beauty of TeamViewer. Each machine needs to have TeamViewer installed, and in order to connect to another computer you just need the machine id and key.

      You know, I don't remember. It's been 4 years and I still have it set up this way. It think it's just random. I basically created the video from their own instructions.

    So the home PC is in sleep mode with its teamviewer open? What happens if you restart the home PC?
    In my case if I remotely restart my computer, I'm stuck at the login page because teamviewer doesn't open until I've logged in.

    • @jerryboutot

      Well, this question is outside of the scope of the intent of the video, but let me make this suggestion: Are you sure you can't connect with teamviewer without logging in? It runs as a background service. I haven't tried it but if it's a background service it starts and runs when the machine starts and logs in with it's own credentials. It would be simple for me to try this because I have two computers right here in the office with TeamViewer on them. The other alternative is to have your computer automatically log on to the user account that would normally be logging on. I only have one profile on my machines so I would have it log in as me. This article tells you exactly how to do it: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ee872306.aspx

      AppDataWorks, LLC It's actually a lab computer for data collecting. So, out of safety concerns, we do not want automatic logon. I tried on my laptop which requires logon and it seems that Teamviewer doesn't startup until windows is logged in.
      Though I haven't done that, I'm guessing configuring it in BIOS may help. What's a concern for me is that I may not be allowed to do this due to the fact that I don't own this specific computer. But anyway, thanks for the help :D

      Wenguang Jiang In Teamviewer, at the top click Extras and then Options. There is a checkbox on the General tab: "Start TeamViewer with Windows". This registers TeamViewer as a system service and according to the documentation, it will allow TeamViewer to run without logging into Windows. This lets you establish a remote control session without logging in on the target PC.

      I just realize that it's not caused by teamviewer not starting before login, but because that the laptop is not connected to wifi before login. Thanks though.

    • @jerryboutot

      Hi - hardwired or wireless, it shouldn't matter. You need to make sure your network adapter is capable of wake on lan. Follow the exact same configuration steps.

    I am so stuck. I think this might just be a paid feature now. I can't actually find the answer but I think in version 14 there is no wake button. You have to be able to access the 'computers and contacts' tab in order to wake a PC. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

    • @ashleym4261
      @ashleym4261 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scratch that, found the wake button. Your email needs to be verified to access the computers and contacts tab. I still cant this to work hella frustrating, try again in a few days.

    Normally the public IP changes regularly, doesn't it? Then why does this method work? I'm a little confused.

    • @jerryboutot
      @jerryboutot  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure about your ISP, but my public IP which is dynamically assigned by Spectrum, rarely changes. I've never had a problem with this. The TeamViewer account along with the registered client is all I've ever needed to make this work.

    • @shanekim28

      Dave Rickards it depends on if your hardware is able to do that. You'll have to do some research. However, Macs are not able to power up from a completely shut-down state.
