She is running a lot,from man to man.
I generally like this series, apart from the 2 cops living together...... why the hell couldn’t the producers have found 2 actors with a tiny bit of empathy. They are the most unlikely and impossible couple. Or is that the point?
I think that’s the point. He just likes women: not all that particular and not very respectful towards any of them. Sexually convenient, you need them for children ( only natural) and that little relief from the company of hard legs can be pheasant. He doesn’t understand women, actually thinks they have no place on the force but tolerates it because he has to. No stopping women. We will push ourselves in where we’re not wanted these days. Roisin is much more to his liking ; tho he pretends to hate her he respects her because she never cows, thinks like a man ( logically and relentlessly) and to boot - she’s sexy. A confident intellectual beauty is a bit out of his reach but fun to have around. LaPlante in her fiction is always talking about the dance between men and women, whether cops or robbers- seems like the same sort of things incentivize ( is that a word😂) our behaviors, our wins and our losses. In my life, work with men on an equal or superior level of power or authority all this is instantly recognizable. You’d better be twice as good to get even half as far and your good looks are a double edge razor. En garde! Never sleep where you work. That benefits the guy not the girl. Sex yer way up at yer own risk😉
That is the point. “Perfect” couples went out with Ward & June, real people are flawed, & therefore building scenes with friction & stress.
Builds tension.
Normally I quite like this drama but their constant bickering is getting on my nerves.
Between The Lines , Prime Suspect and Trial & Retribution. Cracking Police dramas 20 years old and more but still stand up well today. Prime Suspect with the lovely Helen Mirren was my particular favourite but Between The Lines was excellent 1992/94 with Neal Pearson playing ladies man Tony Clark.
What on Earth is that police woman doing with that impossible old coot?
Classic case of "I don't know what she sees in him."

Very true, I find Walker a very abrasive and unstable character for a Senior Officer.......,thank goodness for Pat North as the later Victoria Smurfitt character paired with Walker is obnoxious too x
Mike's character is a narcissistic personality disorder. And, she seems to be a masochist - embracing his abusive ways.
Possible. But Such people exist on and off police forces. Dysfunctional people often do better in the workplace particularly one like law enforcement. You may need to be a bit whacked to whack others and take down whackers. Watch Vera if you want perfectly virtuous detectives, 90 % of the time. Wonderful fantasy. As for true crime, just check the headlines in the US. Clearly the police forces are mottled with villains and miscreants. They shoot the unarmed, the mentally ill, they willfully suppress evidence, plant evidence, beat and torture suspects to force a confession, kill ordinary people not suspected of any crime, kill their own mistaking Black police officers not in uniform for suspects and so on. No wonder civilian miscreants double in inverse proportion. No respect for the law. It is actually a relief to see them here so flawed and yet occasionally doing good work; puts certain things in perspective. Police can be no better than the civilians, the environments, the situations that produce them. We’re all boiling in the same soup!
There are hints in later series, via scenes with his going off the rails son & his dementia suffering mother, that his childhood wasnt good & his father was abusive. Could explain his drinking & irascible character.

great episodes, great plot, but the character of Mike.... Obviously in every job there is somebody like him, so they present a kind of "realism".... But then again, I can't really stomach hum or their toxic relationship!
What a revolting, unconvincing relationship these 2 leads have. I avoid the episodes that feature them, so I dropped this one 20 minutes into it.
just skip that part the rest of the story is good dont miss it

Mike is just so irritating and creepy; not a good match. Cannot see it lasting and don't know what she ever saw in him. I enjoy the show except for him.
Give me all the details about your high rising career. How sour are his grapes? I've got a feeling this is the last trial & redemption I will watch. The one before this one just about sent me over the edge. It won't take much now.
Glad to know I am not the only one. The storylines are good but the lead detective Walker is horrible and has no appeal.
He gets worse!!! This character is a classic narcissistic abuser, with no concept of other people except for what they can do for him. He's impulsive, destructive, isn't past cheating, and seems to use everyone around him, especially when he is in trouble. The only thing he doesn't always do is blame everyone else. He's too busy abusing them.

Great show, but hate it when they delve too deep into the personal lives of the main characters. It only takes away from the story, our own lives can be stressful enough and complicated enough without watching someones elses!.

In any drama one has to be at least a little sympathetic to even the most unpleasant characters. The character of Michael Walker is just too repulsive for any continued viewing on my part.
Neil Pearson and i must mention Tony Doyle who was also superb in Between The LInes and was so 1990s CIB .Special Branch Corruption / Anti Corruption. The line was so blurred it was hard to tell which was what?

Yes totally agree. Given the opportunity he would probably investigate his partners previous convictions, and know full well any strain on the relationship could not be laid at his feet, nor could it be percieved that he is betraying her by doing so. Like, its only to further his career, you understand dont you darling
To be honest Walkewr's ego and attutude stinks...he is awful....you cannot feel any empathy for him whatsoever...some of the killers are more pleasant lmao x x

I keep seeing this yellow strap with a belt they tie around the prisoners have visitors. Wis that some form of monitoring? We don’t use it in the US that I’ve seen.

I have been wondering about that, too! I've seen countless British crime drama series (during four decades), and, as far as I can recollect, this type of belt has not been used in most of them.
Absolutely cracking series with Pat North and the irascible Mike Walker. The split screens never really worked abd im glad other Shows/Similar dramas never really took off. Kate Buffery fell out with Lynda La Plant over changes to her on screen character Pat North who she wanted to be more feminine and glamorous. Which after brilliantly playing Pat North for 6 series she was fired. Victoria Smurfit took over for series 7 /12. This is a follow on from Prime suspect which was also a runaway success.

This is an abusive relationship, Pat is being abused by Mr Walker. Men like him can not take a woman doing better than them, and it is so annoying him saying he is sorry, after he rips her one, everytime things are not in his ways.
Woman, and men need to understand that love is pure, yes there may be difficulties like health, financial, but there is respect, care, joy, no jealousy one to another.
Constant apologies without any change in behaviour is just manipulation.

Everyone should watch this. His behavior is precisely correct for the times. So much disgusting misogyny at every turn. Very realistic behavior except for Norrh getting the big promotion - that rarely happened if anyone with the preferred genitalia was available.The realistic outcome of her "promotion" would have been : give her the job, let her do all of the work, then give her a Male supervisor to not only take the credit, but to receive a paycheck 2 to 3 times the amount of hers. I was told when I was 12 that I had equal rights. Fifty years later - still waiting for that to happen.
Great acting but DI North is about as sexy or attractive as burnt veg.
I agree, but what Mike Walker likes about her is also why he is envious. He likes tough, strong women but he just hates to see it affecting his home life.
