    I know that counterfeits entering the community will destroy the secondary market's current position and make cards plummet in value, which will inevitably piss of collectors and investors, but you know what? It shouldn't matter. I spent $500 on my modern deck and I love it, but if 1000,000 copies of each card in my deck we put into the community overnight and my deck was then worth $20, I would be happy. It would mean that cards are being circulated and the game I love can be played at a reasonable price.

    If WotC printed Modern Masters and rare lands into the ground not only would everybody be able to afford the staple cards, it would also make piracy unprofitable. I'm fine with paying somewhat above the price of a booster for a single rare, but above that? Hell no. 20$ for cardboard that quickly rotates out of use is not a question of expense, but mental stability.

  • @supaganzai
    @supaganzai 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The funny thing about checking for counterfeits is it involves bending or tearing the cards. As if I would let my opponent bend or rip my $1500 Beta Mox Emerald. I use proxies for cards like that now that I made myself, I'm not going to walk around with $15000 in Magic Cards.

      ***** I wouldn't necessarily say poor. Some of the cards have obvious flaws, do not need close inspection to tell are fake, but some of them could easily pass for real cards (I've compared a lot of them and I've played mtg for 15 years).

    Honestly, WotC brought this on themselves.
    And i sincerely am more favorable to these counterfeits today than i was ba few years back.
    Specially because, in the end, it's all PAPER. For those who are dumb and stupid enough to pay 100 dollars on a piece of cardboard, these are pretty offensive, but for long time fans and players, this is actually a opportunity to acquire cards that are so much more expensive today than they were, and have again rare cards that were lost or missing

      +Swell It is fine for the people that just want to have fun, play with their friends or familly using any combination. On large scale it would probably hurt the makers and there are surely others that would use this to cheat or don't even care about the game, but would like to scam others into buying them at high price.

    • @Z3N17H1U5
      @Z3N17H1U5 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Swell people forget that Wizards is a business, in it to make money, an in doing so they have changed the game, printed way too powerful cards, and will perpetually release sets forever as long as it makes them money. they don't care about making you cheap cards, they want profit. i don't lose sleep over proxies

    • @zimoy.701
      @zimoy.701 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not paper that they're selling, child. It's concept. It's design. It's creativity.

    • @trevathecleva
      @trevathecleva 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zimoy.701 Actually they (WotC) are attempting to sell exclusivity. WotC had an exclusive monopoly on MtG, purely enforced by USA law, or in other words by the threat of force (coercion) . If they were truly selling the creativity/art/game they would be selling it in a different way, perhaps as a living card game or something that gives more access and availability to more people (enlarging customer base, increasing market cap). Yet they are selling randomized boosters, which is completely different. The current market structure maximizes the profit purely through lack of supply and copyright coercion. This is why counterfeiters are a threat to the profitability of WotC, they simply don't believe in the religion of intellectual property.

  • @nathanielelia2468

    For real though, counterfeits are pain for collectors and serious players and needs to be dealt with. However, with that being said, I for one would love to get my hands on some of these counterfeits. It would make finishing my cube a whole lot easier/cheeper as well as great for casual games between friends. I currently use proxies that I have made from print outs glued to a land card and put in a sleeve, and using a fake card that is a bit more legit would be fine with me. I really think its only an issue when people are trying to take advantage of others by presenting them as real cards.

    • @V_Pie
      @V_Pie 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wizards need to fight this fake cards with more that a new card frame, the easy way is to reprint everything so that you dont have a $100 card, thus making this practice not worth it, cause if i can make for $1 something that would sell for $10.000 i too would be making fake cards

    Even when WOTC did reprint the power nine in the collectors edition, (gold border) the prices of those cards also shot up to beyond many players' reach, sometimes I hate the fact that MTG is a "collectable" card game.

    Try the water test: taking a damp edge of a paper towel or cotton tip and wiping the edge or border of the card. A real Magic card will not bleed from this, while fakes will occasionally have card bleed from this. This will also pick up black marker modification

    WOTC's fault 600$ decks come on! just to play standard for 1 1/2 years. Boardgames are better or LCGs 120$ can get u a long way. They don't make cards available for players. U open up a Booster box and get a shit load of crap stuff..prob 2-3 good cards for 120$ in my area. That's just absurd. WHats this about MTG not being around anymore. well LCGs did it they are making money. WHy cant WOTC just make cards available and cheaper for players in general, they design good cards then put it on mythic then expect everyone to buy it for 60$ a pop. Its like they are happy with jaces and tarmogoyf running around cuz its more $_$ in their pocket. Hope Counterfeits make a wizards realize that magic is getting too expensive for us regular players, print more good stuff I dont want more shit in from over priced modern packs or shitty sets where the mythics are the only things worth to buy.

  • @Ajmes
    @Ajmes 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To those who complain like 'don't play if you're not willing to spend money, and enable the company to profit so they can release new material'. That's all fine and great, but this shit costs a lot less money to make than video games, and high end modern games only cost around 60 dollars. Those games offer a lot of replay value and options. To achieve the same thing with MTG, you'd need at least 3-4 decks, and ASSUMING each deck only costs 100$(a highly conservative estimate/rather cheap), that's 300-400$ to play the game.... This is obscenely expensive, and often prohibitively expensive for people looking to find a source of entertainment in their lives. What offends me even more, is the online version of MTG has almost the exact same prices, which is even more ludicrous. If they're going to be that much of greedy assholes about it all, they should make a separate series that reprints all MTG cards, but have them clearly marked as super cheap versions($1 or less each, basic lands for 25 cents), but still allow them in tournaments etc. This way they have no collector's value, but can still be enjoyed.

    • @joeystormtrooper
      @joeystormtrooper 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Ajmes I'm with you on MTGO. I stopped owning cards years ago (around when Tarmagoyf started to get traction) because constructed was just getting too expensive to play. So I moved to limited only and eventually played online a lot; because if I wanted to play frequently, the only way was online since I would be only going to FNM once a week or something to get my fix. The thing about MTGO is, since we are paying basically the exact same price for a pack as a real one, it creates a secondary market (like real MTG) where cards are also valued (where some prices are even more ridiculous than their real life counterpart). I'm hopeful their online revenue system changes, because this is why Hearthstone is gaining in popularity not just from the general card game community, but magic players as well. Everything in Hearthstone is FARMABLE and you can eventually own and play every single deck. They give players the choice if they want to spend moneyl; their in game purchasing prices are arguably fair, costing roughly $1.00 a pack. To me, that's more fair than $4.99 a pack on MODO. AND I'm in Canada, so our dollar is really bad at the moment, a draft costs me almost $20! Ridiculous

  • @jorgebefanperez1531
    @jorgebefanperez1531 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe a huge part of this is also the MTGO possibility.
    Why not make MTGO a pay once, play forever game?
    This would bring many more brains, possibly very good brains to the game, leaving the cards to the people who want to physically touch them, play with them, play tournaments or collect them.
    Reprinting PROPERLY the most expensive (or needed to play and expensive) will help and possibly solve the counterfeit problem, but also I feel like WOTC is being a bit greedy.
    I hope this doesn't mean the end of MTG as we know it.

  • @adamheeley285
    @adamheeley285 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    ..or if wizards of the coast just reprinted these then they would be making money instead of counterfieters. Except they dont, and peple dont want to pay thousands for cards, so they make counterfiets. and like i posted before I hope it ruins the vintage market for cards, paying anything over 10 dollars for a card is ridiculous.

    • @zimoy.701

    I have that "latest version" and they still feel rough on the back, fail the -color- shine of light test and the "miscut" looking cards are still not re aligned and the print resolution is lower so you clearly see the pixels. The "blue core" proxys some people found are rebacked original cards and never were mass produced.
    So:
    - there arent and probably never will be perfect fakes
    - these are still good for some casual play, however

    So can I just say that while counter-fitting for exploration is obviously wrong, speaking as a proxy vintage player, it's nice to have good quality proxies available of the really expensive cards. These are cards worth thousands of dollars and while I love the format I simply do not have that kind of money to partake and many places run unsanctioned vintage tournaments that allow proxies. As long as these cards are clearly proxies (i.e a judge would be able to see at a deck check that it was a proxy by, for example, using proxies with a white core rather than a blue one or a proxy number down where the set information and artist usually is) I don't see any problem with them being sold as proxies. WoTC could even sell official proxies for profit. People would buy them.
    All this being said I am slightly worries about how convincing these "blue core" fakes are becoming. I may buy a set of white core power 9 proxies, but I will never buy any blue core proxies. Interested to hear your thoughts on this.

    If someone told you the new Lamborghini you bought 2 years ago was fake, as in made by some other scam manufacturer, but you couldn't tell the difference until you were told... as a consumer, why does it even matter? As long as it's functionally and aesthetically identical, then we should learn to accept it.
    If a tree falls and nothing is around to perceive its fall.........

    • @cl4ymore123

      the thing is that if this goes around much, noone will buy packs and so on anymore. because everything will just buy all his cards there..

    • @JessifurC
      @JessifurC 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      cl4ymore123 Oh we'll be buying packs still. We just wouldn't be able to tell which packs were "real" and which weren't. The bigger outcome to mass-produced proxies (assuming they're identical to real cards) = sudden increase in supply while demand stays the same = the value/price of each card drops (so all the cards you own now will be worth much less)... which, at least to me, I won't complain too much about. More affordable cards? More decks I can make & tournaments I can compete in? Sure, why not?
      Really, proxying ends up being Wizard's concern, and shouldn't be much of an issue to anyone else, other than people who are investing in MTG for profit.
      The only reason others are complaining about proxies right now is because you can still tell that proxies are proxies. People don't like spending money on things that don't meet their expectations. The fakers got caught. ("It's not illegal if you don't get caught.") Now if the proxy quality was perfect... we really wouldn't be seeing as many complaints.

    Reserve list is stupid, I don't care what anyone says. They can reprint power 9 cards ect, give them either a different art style or distinguish it from the original which they do when they reprint other cards multiple times. As an owner of of high end cards you still get to treasure that you have the originals but make the cards accessible to everyone.
    Those honest people who invested in P9 cards for high prices would suffer as the value of them would go down a certain % if the cards were reprinted, but for a collector the originals will always be valued to some degree.
    Why give us the name and show us links to proxy sellers if you're against them? I guess it's too easy to google anyways. My issue isn't with proxies, it's with dishonest people. I have some valuable cards and have proxies for them and they never leave my house. It's for personal use and I let people know if I happen to play against someone.

    I can see where you're coming from but I myself love the Legacy format. There, you can play most cards and no deck reigns supreme forever. But some cards are staples. Fetchlands for example are a major part of legacy play, they shuffle your library (looking at you brainstorm), they give you a option of 2 colors untaped for a just 1 life, they thin out your deck and they put a land in the graveyard (relevant for cards like Tarmogoyf, Grim Lavamancer, Delve cards in general and more).
    But to own a playset of Zendikar fetchlands you have to fork over +100 USD and that makes them WAY out of reach for lots of people. Magic is indeed about skill but without serious money forget about having a chance in a tournament.
    That's supply and demand for you folks.

    • @FusterIsBased
      @FusterIsBased 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryadriz Play onslaught fetches. Modern players could only play with Zendikar fetches before Khans was printed. Your deck won't hurt too badly from it. Besides, the upcoming block is going to be a revisit of Zendikar and you can be sure the Zendikar fetches are going to see a reprint.

    I think counterfeits are not a problem as long as they are marked as counterfeits. But if we got to the point, where fake cards are mixed with real ones and they are beyond recognition, that would be a problem.

    I have never commented on a video before with the exception of a potential prize :P but this guy hit the nail on the head!! Magic is a game, a very very very good game but in the end it is a hobby for the vast majority.
    I am sick to death of playing with people who have less skill but bigger bank accounts! I want to be able to enjoy magic as it was supposed to be enjoyed with out a financial commitment that parallels a serious drug habit! So thank you MTG LION for saying what needs to be said! Wizards take note and listen to the community!

  • @cantrips

    All successful TCGs have a healthy collector and a healthy player base. Would you buy packs if the cards were worthless? If so, why don't you go buy cheap packs of a failed TCG? The chance to make money is the main reason why Magic is successful while thousands of other TCGs failed. Wizards wouldn't be able to sell any packs and would shut down production pretty damn quick. Think about this a bit before you go bashing / blaming collectors. Sure, it would be nice if the cards were super cheap, but you wouldn't want to pay $3-4 per pack in that case. Be honest with yourself.
    Also - beginners may not be able to tell these are counterfeits, but experienced collectors can tell they are fake. For starters, the coloring is not right, they are too shiny, the dot pattern is off, and the cards are too smooth. Some people can also recognize fake cards by the smell. I can tell these are fake from the video because of the shine and the coloring.

    Sooner or later WotC is going to realize the power they have over the more naive players of M:tG (if they haven't already) and they will realize that they are essentially printing money. They will make a card (the expeditions for example) the price will skyrocket due to the thirst of these savage collectors and they will outright pay thousands of dollars just to have playsets before the less rich or newer players can even stand a fighting chance of ever playing with these expensive cards or experiencing them. Sad. I honestly don't know where I stand in supporting proxies, but if things keep going in the direction they are headed in now, I think I wouldn't mind having a few fakes in my deck if it meant I could afford my fucking Uni textbooks at the same time.

    This is interesting. If the counterfeits are perfect, at what point are the cards real, or fake? If you cannot tell the difference, and it is the exactly the same a WOTC printed card I don't know, what will happen. If two of the same black lotuses were placed in front of you, one being a counterfeit, and you are told to identify the counterfeit, it would be a %50 chance. That's the problem. Another way to look at it is that, if the fakes are perfect, isn't it the same as WOTC reprinting it themselves? Most would say no. Overall this is a very confusing topic. I agree with you that this issue needs to be stopped, most definitely.

    So even though wizards of the coast won't print reserved list cards, it isn't their fault that the card's price rises to 100,000, that's just what people in the market have driven it to, and are willing to pay, and those are collectors anyways. So idk why people are saying wizard's brought this on themselves.

    When a cavern of soul is worth 200$ and its practically a staple in deck, you have a problem. that mean to be able to play in a competitive matter, a matter almost forced by WOTC, you would have to sped at minimum 800$ for only 4 cards. yeah. fuck em.

  • @OniXraxis

    I just wanted to say that proxies and counterfeits are two completely different things. Counterfeits are cards that are made to look just like a officially printed magic card, while proxies are cards that are used to represent a card, not to imitate it. I don't understand how a fake magic card that is obviously not real (Like a Zurgo Helmsmasher with an Orc from World of Warcraft as the art.) is really is either hurting anyone or is anything different then an alter. Some people just like to customize their EDH/Commander decks but want something that alters can't physically do. My point is that as long as the fake card isn't printed to look just like a real card or is being used in a non casual way, such as a Sanctioned Tournament or something to that effect, it doesn't hurt players and it doesn't effect the card market.

  • @thesnare100
    @thesnare100 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    there a couple more tests you can do, the glossiness test, the texture (the way it feels) test, the jewels loupe to see if the color "sprinkles" (I forget what they're called) flower shaped wedges, that are small on the cards. Are you suggesting they reprint even the most valuable cards? Even lotuses and the power 9? I hear from other mtg players that it would kill the game, since the high price of the secondary market is what keeps the game going. What about games where the cards don't change/ the game doesn't evolve, like normal playing cards for example, they don't cost a lot but people still buy them and play games with them.

    if the counterfeits are to the point where they are passing light and rip tests and are as close to the originals as you say then many people could have them and not even know it. they could slip by judges fairly easily. so at that point doesn't it just help us as players. I don't agree with making money off of it but if they are flooding the market with extremely good quality proxies that will keep prices down in a sense. in a sense it's unfair because others are paying high dollars for the cards while others are building passable whole decks for pennies but in another sense if the proxies get so good that there is no way to tell them apart from the originals then that's just kind of sticking it to the man (wotc). we get the reprints we need and want. I don't think I would play in an official event with them but for casual I'd love a full set of staples

    I honestly don't think there's a problem with this at all. The game, correct me if I am wrong, is by and large designed for people to meet others and have fun in engaging and interactive games with others. That being said, there is no reason that this experience should cost you thousands of dollars. Just because someone says a piece of cardboard is worth so much (and then having everyone agreeing to it) doesn't make it so. There is a particular diamond company from the 1920's that is profiting from this ideal TO THIS DAY and I think it's disgusting. The game is designed to be fun, and it's not for anyone who cannot afford to shell out hundreds of dollars on cards. This wouldn't be the case if Wizards wasn't specifically influencing the economy of their own game by limiting production of specific cards. From a business sense, it makes sense. But at its core, Magic was designed to be a fun game that should be approachable and accessible to all. And with the prices of some cards today, it is not possible. Until this changes, I will openly support the people who invest in making Magic an accessible and approachable game for all.

    I dont own any proxies, but yes I certainly would if there was a card I felt fit perfectly in my deck and it was overpriced. I certainly don't like the idea of wizards getting screwed over but then they have the responsibility to bring great cards back that are way too overpriced like they are attempting with this new modern masters set. If I felt so inclined I would draw up a black lotus on computer paper and play it in my deck but now that just wouldn't look or feel right would it? I think we're forgetting the point is to have fun with the game- and if you can have more fun with proxies because wizards doesn't wanna mess up the value of some hoarder's binder, well then I say you do it. Cause the game is just that; a game. I couldn't care less about the value of your collections, nor my own, because it's not about money, nor should it be. Just give us the cards we want (and it doesn't have to be all at the same time either) and we won't have to go somewhere else to get passable copies just to have fun.
