    My #1 tool has to be a 5mm crochet hook my boyfriend purchased me from an online store. It's a Susan Bates hook but it has a custom clay handle that has a blue base with lily pads and flowers to look like a pond. It came with four clay progress keepers (a daisy, a frog, a lily pad, and a mushroom) that you can attach to a little loop at the bottom of the handle. It has to be one of my most used hooks and it has a special place in my heart from a person I love

    Number one tool is my kettle. Can’t be knitting without a cup of tea! I loved seeing all your different tools it’s so funny how different people have different preferences. I keep my scissors, stitch markers and tapestry needles (my go to notions) in a metal tin, so when I am about to head out, I pick up my project bag, give it a shake, and if I hear the rattle I know my notions tin is in there without having to dig through the bag.

    The thing i would instantly replace if its unusable: a very specific project bag. My best friend is a very ambitious climber and i once had a chalk bag in my hands she sew herself. I mentioned that it would be a practical project bag for knitting on the go, since it has a loop for securing on the belt, a drawstring closing with stopper which is usable by one hand, and a round supported bottom which prevents it from falling to the side if standing.
    The next birthday she gifted me a "chalk bag" specifically sewn for me. Beside the mentioned benefits she increased the bottom size a little bit, so it would hold a 100g cake perfectly snuggling like one of your cozys, and a ball has enough free room to unwind when pulled. Second she used for the lower half faux leather on the outside which stops needles from poking through, and she didn't sew the leather completely around on the top, just on the bottom, which turned out to be the perfect storing space for a folded paper pattern, or some cut-off yarn when colormatching on second socks from self striping leads to a whole bunch of leftover scraps.
    I totally love this bag and i use it all the time (less now because its too cold to knit outside), it fits my notion box, a pattern, a 100g-cake or ball and 5 dpns / 3 addi flexis / 1 magic loop circular (other methods i didn't try so i can't tell). Despite the emotional load the bag carries, it is really practical. I simply love it.

      @@jennadotson6117 search for "chalk bag" in any search engine. I found the colored ones from black diamond look really similar, they just don't have the half closed leather pockets on the outside (but they do have a supported lower part, so you could replace it mentally with leather)

    I recommend buying a singular interchangeable needle tips + cord to test out before buying an interchange set instead of trying out a fixed circular needle because I find that the join between the tip and the cord is one of the important thing to test out.

  • @andreacover5840
    @andreacover5840 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My “immediately replace if lost or broken” tool are swivel cords. I recently learned (thanks to you!) that the knitter’s pride mindful swivel cords work with my knit picks needle tips. I have been in heaven since. In large projects like blankets (one i just finished, the other started recently) the needles and cord seem to get twisted constantly with traditional cords and put excess strain on my wrists. NOT ANYMORE!!!🎉 same with magic loop. No more fighting the fixed cord and untwisting every turn if the work!🎉
    So now my problem is that although I would love a higher end set of needles, they MUST come with swivel cords and that limits my selection drastically 🤷🏻‍♀️

    What I really wouldn't want to give up (aside from my Chiaogoo interchangeables and DPNs): "Scheepjes Wooden Yarn Winder Butler" (as it's called on Amazon). I already have three of those yarn holders as I often have more than one project I'm working on. I'm waiting for delivery of a yarn winder, so maybe I wont need them as often then, as I will be able to make yarn cakes and may pull the yarn from the center.

    Besides my needles and hooks, I cannot live without my tool to pick up stitches. I don’t know what it is called offhand but it is metal with a hook on one end and a point on the other for picking up dropped stitches. I don’t need it too often but when I drop a stitch it is a lifesaver. I’ve tried with my regular crochet hooks but they don’t work as well. After that is my light bulb stitch markers. Loved seeing all your notions and tools. So organized!

    I use a hanging organizer from Della Q for my fixed circulars. I’ve tied it to a hanger and it’s hung on the back of my bedroom door with my robe. Great for keeping the needles organized by size (they had both metric and US available) and kink free. Less of an issue with ChiaoGoo but still helps me to visually keep it sorted. Love this!
    My “Go Bag” is a small plastic divided box from Nancy’s KnitKnacks that I got as a knitter prize. Allows me to keep several sizes of stitch markers, darning needles and my small scissors (Merchant & Mills is the brand I think - bought at a sewing store but brilliant). Fits easily in my project bag or next to my knitting spot at home.
    I use my Sock Ruler regularly as I only make socks for others. Great idea to put the chart on the back. Any suggestions where to get this?

I am going through like yourself the keep to give. I bought some beautiful wooden knitting needles (very expensive cherry-type wood I believe) that I have not used at all since enjoying interchangeable ones. Loving the motivation here to get busy on some projects I have put off. Will be making your yarn keeper/snuggler. So smart in keeping that ball of yarn together when traveling.

    What's in my minimalist knitting box. 1 "chgoo" 32 inch 2.25 circular needle, 1 pair of embroidery scissors, 12 light bulb stitch markers, 1 weaving in needle for the ends and for Kitchener, and 1 row counter. I own nothing else except my new sock yarns. All leftovers and snipped ends are discarded.

    All of my knitting stuff resides in one corner of one room, but:
    My DPNs and circulars needles are in a large plastic Ferrero Rocher gift box thingy. The pairs of needles that my husband found for me are in a needle holder that my Mum bought for me Christmas 2021 - which was a mistake in itself as I had asked for a DPN needle case/holder... turned out useful in the end though! All smaller items are kept in random small tins which were actually originally designed for storing sanitary towels in your handbag.
    I'm very much in the hunter/gather and improvisation stage of learning the craft! The majority of my 'stash' is from over-excitedly buying loads of sock wool from Aldi. At the time, the DPNs came with the wool, so I have many sets. Shame that I'm a monogamous knitter, really.

    I recently moved overseas and so before I went, I went through my set of needles and turfed out all the cheap bamboo/plastic ones that I had a metal substitute for. Most of mine are Addis although I do have a couple of Chiagoo and Knitpro. I exclusively have circulars and DPNs. As for stitch markers, I have what you call "lightbulb stitch markers" although in my case they're just safety pins, salvaged from whenever I bought clothes. It's pretty common to have the lightbulb shaped safety pins or other little safety pins attaching the price tag. I just collected all of them and pinned them into the edge of my project bag so they're right there when I need them. Don't use stitch markers that much so using free safety pins works just fine for me.

    Hello, I wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your organizing tips! I made the canvas bags for all my circular needles that you suggested from Amazon. Great tip! I divided them for example, the US 1 by 9 inch, 16 inch and 24 inch so 3 bags for US1. All others are just by needle size. I did that because I use US1 for my socks mostly. I then put them in a basket that fit like a filing cabinet. So easy and neat. I also took some tips from you on organizing your “go bag” for having supplies on hand where you knit most often. I kept all my tools upstairs so I’m always having to run upstairs to grab something, having to stop a show we’re watching. Right? Love the light bulb tip too. You’re so good at that thank you!

    My can’t live without tool is my Knit Kit that my sister bought me almost 20 years ago or so…it’s the palm sized plastic tool that has a measuring tape, built in needle gauge, thread cutter, row counter, crochet hook (in 2 sizes) and came with a stack of stitch markers, tapestry needle and fold up scissors. The new ones aren’t as nice as the older design, so I’d be pretty upset if I lost mine! But other than that, my row counter, stitch markers and fold up scissors are invaluable. I have literally one set in each WIP 😅

    I love this kind of video!!! It's so nice to get inspiration about how to organize my knitting stuff (and tips for great tools and notions). I recently bought a case for my interchangeble needles on Etsy, it has labels on the case and it is the best! It also has a zipper pocket where I can store my cords and endcaps and stuff.
    I also have a digital row counter, wich I love to use if I'm knitting socks on dpn's. If I work on magic loop or 9 inch circular I like to use a bit of scrap yarn to weave in every round, and count my rows with that. I don't like using my row counter for those techniques, I think it has to do with the position of my hands. But for working on dpn's I can't go without my row counter!

    hi hi, not sure if you know but the knit picks needles and the lantern moon cables to my understanding are compatible as are any knitpro or knitters pride needles. lantern moon is now made by knitpro/knitters pride. :) hope that helps. also since you love wooden needles, maybe take a look at seeknit needles (petite knit uses these) or signature needles (high end wood). i have a few sets but have my eye on seeknit needles since they have very small mm interchangibles in wood. keep us posted on what you decide to go with needle-wise. you dont seem to like the fortes too much. alsoif i were going looking for a set of ic needles, i would buy a tip and a cable for a set i am considering, i find that the fixed is different enough from an ic tip that you may not get the full experience. thanks for the podcast!!

    I swear by my knit picks sets. I love the grip of wooden needles and you can get almost every size under the sun. (Not a fan of the slip of metal because i always end up dropping stitches like crazy.) My mom has addi clicks and i hate the join in the cables. They have this odd bump that catches. I've had wonderful luck with the knit picks cables being smoothe, and when I've had parts break, they are happy to send me a replacement free of charge.
    My fave notion are the round st markers with the little opening to slide into individual sts. I wish they came to fit over #17 ndls cause then they'd be the only markers i would use. I LOVE multi purpose notions!

    Clover Amour and Chiaogoo Red Lace for me. I've yet to come across a cable as good as that red cable except the blue cables in the shorties sets but that's because they're the same design, just... short. Fun Fact: Chiaogoo Spins (their wooden needle set) are interchangable with the red lace cables. I'm curious of the joins on the Tunisian hooks are as smooth as the knitting needles? I've tried other long tail Tunisian hooks but getting the stitches back onto the hook was a total PIA which has kept me from doing a lot of things because you can fit only so many stitches, even on a super unbalanced 14 -17" hook.

    Besides my needles, my tape measure, stitch markers and a crochet hook for dropped stitches are my go to's. I have a multitude of other notions I need pretty regularly. I don't knit out and about other than in the car or waiting for an appointment so I don't have any real notion bags to speak of. I do have everything available to throw one together though. For me, it's not how often I use something but what it brings to the project. Cable needles, stitch holders, sock blockers etc., all have their place. Could I do without them? Sure, I have for years, but they do make life easier.

    You didn't need to buy the Clover circular stitch holders. You have 1,000 cords- use two of the shorter cords and a few of your 10,000 purple cord stoppers. Done.

    So fun! Thanks for sharing! Something I can’t live without are good cutting scissors, darning needle (I keep loosing mine ALL the time no matter how hard I try) and double pointed needles size 1.5,2.5 and 4 - i currently discovered shorties but if i wouldn’t have a set of those needles they’d be replaced instantly

    Such a fun video! Thank you for sharing your “interior” views!!! I mostly knit small portable projects and my favorite style project bag is the large Retreat Bag (free sewing pattern by Emmaline Bags) (for ready made see The Scrappy Angel website under the name Lorelei Bag). My favorite stitch markers are the lightbulb style and recently purchased the small round metal ones which I really like too.

    Such a fun video! Next to my crochet hooks, I think I love my crochet hook roll up case - that I crocheted myself - is my favorite. It holds most sizes hooks and there is space for stitch markers, tapestry needles and a small pair of scissors.
    It’s always in my project basket that I have in the living room with my current wips, so I can easily reach for it.

    Good afternoon New York. Great podcast Nat. I only crochet with armour hooks as well. Nothing else. I cannot knit my socks without my chiaogoo 32 inch 2.25 needle. Again, nothing else. Only the light bulb stitch markers for me. What I do not own or have use for are: progress keepers, those colorful bags in many sizes, any interchangable sets of needles. And if you want to see a fabulous colorway of sock yarn, check out The simply sock yarn company online. Search yarn categories and enter hedgehog fiber yarn. The color is LEAF. I don't think anyone else has this color except the simply sock yarn company. An amazing shade of green. They are in Indiana. Take care. Enjoy the sunshine 😘 Ken

    My ride or die knitting tool is my triangle stitch markers from Coco Knits. I’ve purchased two sets because they’re easy to lose😜. I love how thin they are. I use a bigger one to indicate beginning of round. I store them all in an unused prescription bottle.

    Just FYI Natalie , Addi is a german company and their needles are sized differently than those mm (english) or US - completely different 😮 so unless you have Addi knitting needles I would give it away to an Addi user or stow away or sell. Don’t use it with UK, USA or other non-Addi sets.

      @vlo1976 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jennadotson6117 my first one was from Etsy but I got a pack of 6 from Amazon for much cheaper. Here’s a tip, slide the stitches off the needle onto the spiral and then when you need them again, slide them back on to the original needle, than knit thru them, rather than trying to knit off the spiral. Makes it pretty smooth that way.

    As someone who mostly works with fingering weight yarn, do the larger needles in your set get much use, and do you still think interchangeables are worth it? Interchangeable needles are obviously popular for a reason, but i've seen a criticism of them being that they might not make as much sense (especially as a recommendation for beginners) if you mostly use one weight of yarn and realistically never go above or below a a few particular needle sizes.

    • @achimwasp
      @achimwasp ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As I also prefer finer yarns, I settled on the smaller Chiagoo Red Lace set which only has tips up to 5 mm. I will probably never use anything larger than that. Saved me a lot of money. I also have the Mini set which I use quite a lot.
